Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It seems that one's impression of this church is highly dependent on whether the person gets to see its interior. The church is closed when there are weddings taking place, and it is apparently a very popular wedding venue.

The exterior is what you see in the photos, it's different but does not make a huge impression. However, the inside is extremely beautiful and unique. Layers of light pass through the windows, and vines grow on the side of the stone wall with water trickling down into a small stream that flows through the inside of the church. All you hear is the water flowing. It was so serene.

The pews and altar are made of wood for the location, and look fluid and modern.

Photos are not allowed but it does not hurt anyone to put down the phone or camera and just take in the surroundings.

I think the website could improve by setting the times when the church is open for visits. Until they do that, be prepared. If you happen to catch it when it's open, you are very lucky. Just treat it as one of those things that happen by chance and you won't be as disappointed.

I walked there from Harunire Terrace. After passing the bus top, it's uphill on the left. Google map said 5 minutes. It's more like 15 minutes. I went on a weekday at around 3:30pm. I was the last person they allowed in as they closed the church at 4pm for a wedding. I was very lucky. There was only one other person. The staff then offered to take us to the small museum in the basement, where photos are allowed.

It was a wonderful experience.

Very nice church for marriage ceremony. Japanese girls love to visit this church. It's free to visit but you may need some guidance to find it because the city map just not friendly for drivers.

To me, it is just a tick box, 'been there, done that' kind of attraction. Unless you are quite interested in architecture or hunting for a unique church for a wedding, there isn't any spectacular about this location. Most of the time, it is closed for wedding and you can only look from afar.

Very pretty church with cleaver use of natural light. The interior is also pretty with lots of flowers and plants. The church itself is also an art work. Recommend to visit in late afternoon when you could observe how the changing day lights influence the interior.

The entrance to the worship hall was an eye opener. There's a little museum downstairs where one can look at the history of this church. The workshop hall just felt so peaceful.

If you're in the Karuizawa area, this is a nice unexpected detour. Catch the local train from Karuizawa to Nakakaruizawa. It's only a 17 min walk from Nakakaruizawa station along the main road and then turn left up a shared road that isn't marked. There isn't any signage to get there. Once at the top, it is quite a marvel to look at. Inside it's quite small but has a flowing stream and lush green plants. Note that you won't be able to take photos inside the church.

after the church you may want to walk further up the main road to get to the terraces where there are some quaint shops overlooking the river. It's only a further 5 min walk from the stone church.

Overall a nice half day detour if you're in Karuizawa.

Karuizawa boasts of local sights of minor as well as major importance and this stone church does not fall easily into a category. In India, for example, Stone churches and temples would be cut out of rock and be of historical value but in Japan these are mainly special buildings which serve western-style wedding parties ! Nevertheless with a visit !!
