Just halfway between Giethoorn and Groningen, we stopped at Veenhuizen to take a look at the prisonmuseum. The museum proved to be a nice interactive and informative setting to learn a lot about the Dutch justice system. Most of the material is in Dutch, but maybe you can get an English guide if you want.

Visited it without too much hope but impressed in a very good way. The bus tour was also very interesting.

This museum is housed in one of 5 prisons in the town of Veenhuizen. 3 are still currently used. The museum is beautifully done with many different sorts of exhibits & experiences. There is a lot to see & do for all ages. The children were given a booklet to follow along finding different clues through the museum & there... More

I visited this place, because of a theaterperformance of: "Het pauperparadijs", based on a book, which describes the history of this place, located in the middle of nowhere, where in former days the most poor people from the city of Amsterdam were set to work, reclaiming arable land. It is a bit a forgotten place, with a forgotten history, but... More

I spent an afternoon with my two teenage daughters here over the Easter weekend. I would definitely recommend a visit to the museum. The museum is interactive in nature and well laid out with plenty of artefacts, stories and even an interactive court in which the public can also try their hand at deciding someone's fate. The information provided is,... More

It was impressive to learn how the Dutch think about correcting wrong behaviour from the early days up till now. It is not only a museum, the whole village is involved in the institute and work for the government. Take a tour on the "boevenbus' and learn all about living in Veenhuizen, the Dutch correctional center. Visit a real prison... More
