The Hill of Crosses is an area on the highway covered with crosses, the development of which is related to the expulsion of the Reigi Swedes in August 1781. Tsarina Catherin II signed an order that allowed the Swedes to resettle in South-Ukraine. On August 20, 1781, the emigrants gathered on the Hill of Crosses and conducted their last church service. Thus they said farewell to the place that been home to the Swedes for at least 400 to 500 years. Initially, the people who were leaving the island came to the Hill of Crosses to make their crosses. Today, things are backwards – crosses are made by those who come to the island for the first time.

Nice place to visit

Very nice place to visit and definitely worth the drive. Slightly chilling with all the crosses, but it is a good hour spent walking on and around the hill. Very cool indeed.

Well, it wasn't my first visit here but once again I really liked the place. This place is absolutely spectacular. I have never seen something like that anywhere in the world. It's a must see place in Lithuania!

This place is beautiful and very moving. The hill is closer to Riga than Vilnius - only 1h40 minutes on very good roads. It's free to go and will reward you with some amazing photos. There's an official entrance that has a souvenir shop and you can buy a cross there if you want too. Loved my trip out there

A friend had visited here last year and recommended it. Very, very impressive site and experience. Thousands of crosses places to claim their heritage and identity against the various occupations. I must note I did find a Star of David there and my Jewish friends were most touched by its presence.

We made a detour to visit the Hill of Crosses when we were traveling between Riga and Vilnius. It is worth of a 45 minute stop and held the attention of all of our kids. It is worth reading the history online beforehand or watching some of the good YouTube videos. There is a gift shop and bathrooms and had... More

On a fairly remote location, there are hundreds of thousands of crosses placed by Estonians initially as a protest to the anti-religion of communism and a protest to the takeover of their country. Certainly worth the trip to see this, and on the path between Riga and Tallinn.

While travelling with friends we came across the hill of crosses by fortune....it wasn't our destination but we soon stopped and had a look...it's truly inspiring and spiritual....it's not a commercial site but very true and authentic...it not a massive place and there's nothing else there...to wander around and contemplate and to empathise with the people was truly spiritual...I am... ...and a little overwhelming! But worth every painstaking part of the journey. We flew to Riga in Latvia and stayed, it was difficult to get to Siauliai, Lithuania, despite the information online saying differently. The Hill of Crosses was one of the most magnificent journeys I have ever made though. Cx Visited April 2013, not 2014

Please note the 4 photos currently ONLY show the Hill of Crosses in Lithuania. Whereas Lithuania's Hill of Crosses commemorates those who dies in the 19th century rebellions and are made of a wide range of materials and are mostly purchased - the crosses at Ristimägi on Hiiumaa are made of materials visitors find at the site. Because the crosses... More
