The Goleta Butterfly Grove is currently closed to public access. The Ellwood Mesa has a significant number of dead and dying trees that are at risk for falling. The City is working on a Monarch Butterfly Habitat Management Plan to restore this area as a overwintering location for these beautiful creatures

I discovered this place at an open house for the Land Trust of Santa Barbara, but have been here many times since. It has lots of trails winding all over it which a person can explore.

Unfortunately, public access has been restricted during migration nesting due to the drought. We have had decent rain so far this season so check with Goleta City Recreation Department.More

Recently, the City received the results of a tree health assessment performed as part of the Monarch Butterfly Habitat Management Plan. As part of that report, the City learned that hundreds of trees in the Ellwood Mesa are dead or dying. Many of these trees...More

Normally it is fantastic between November - February. However, don't go in 2017! Many trees have died due to the lingering drought and bugs/pests that are killing the trees. Many of the trees will be removed and the trails have been closed for hikers because...More

A beautiful, natural butterfly grove near the ocean. At the right time of year (look it up online to see if they are currently there) you can see hundreds of butterflies fluttering. It's peaceful and magical.

We're sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your walk. This is a natural area with dirt paths. You're correct that the butterflies migration have moved on to other parts. The best time to see the butterflies is between November and February.

February was a great time to visit but the butterflys were not where we thought they would be. We had been there several times. It was great to see the revitalization of the trees from the rains. We did not see many butterflys initally so...More

Very pleasant walk to the grove. Pick a semi-warm winter day (before the butterflies leave) to visit. They're are usually fanning their wings on a warm day. "Magnificent" is not adequate enough to describe it.

I lie nearby and am a frequent visitor to this lovely grove. Problem is, very few Monarchs showed up this year, almost none at all at the Main Grove. Also, they are only here from early November through mid February, so keep this in mind...More
