About
At Benziger, we're about three things: family, great wine and healthy vineyards. For over 40 years, we’ve crafted expressive wines from our Sonoma Mountain ranch and premium Sonoma County vineyards. We’re proud to tend these sites using eco-friendly farming – each is certified Biodynamic, organic, or sustainable. Our tours provide a behind-the-scenes look at our Biodynamic estate vineyard and include a tasting of winery-exclusive wines.

- Ken F1 contributionMust seeIf you are short on time and need to select only a few wine tastings/tours make Benzinger top of the list. We did the tractor tour and it was beautiful. Dr Bob was an excellent guide, extremely informative and entertaining. I love the ecological farming they are practicing there and the wine is great as well.Thank you for taking the time to write a great review! It sounds like you had an outstanding time at Benziger. For the price they also give you 4 tastings. Dr Bob took us on the trip around. I explained in the beginning I wanted to know how things were made, he took a little time in the beginning to go over some information. I don’t drink but find the wine making process very interesting. They were offering us a special on two bottles and we exchange one n still found it a good price.Thank you for visiting us and taking the time to share your thoughts. - Sandy D13 contributionsGreat tasting experienceWe are from the Okanagan Valley, BC (Canada) and, while visiting the Sonoma/Napa valleys, we stopped at Benzinger Family Winery. Thank you, Patrick, for the excellent tasting experience today, July 8. We appreciated your depth of knowledge. Beautiful vineyard and lovely tasting room with some truly wonderful wines. Especially loved the La Reyna Pinot Noir and the West Rows Chardonnay, although I took home a bottle of the Frank Johnson Rose. It was a treat to meet winemaker Lisa Amaroli and chat about vines and wine. Highly recommend visiting Benzinger Family Winery.Thank you for visiting us and taking the time to share your thoughts. The grounds were beautiful. We took the tractor tour and learned a lot about their growing methods and it ended with a wine tasting. Our guide, David, did a great job of sharing the history and the workings of the winery. We enjoyed it very much and highly recommend this as a stop on your next visit to wine country.Hi, Thank you for visiting us and taking the time to share your thoughts. - Blake BGainesville, Florida25 contributionsThe best of SonomaWe were lucky enough to have booked a tour when no one else was scheduled, getting essentially a private tour from Donna. She was very knowledgable on the grounds, the winery's history, the wine-making process, and the wines that we were served during the tasting at the end of the tour. It was wonderful to hear that she was an active member of Benziger's wine club who loves the winery so much that she now works there. The views from the vineyard were the best that we saw in Sonoma - great for pictures and to enjoy a morning with family. It was incredible to hear about the Benziger family's farming background. The wines were top-notch, as well. This was the only winery on our trip that we ordered a half of a case from.Thank you for taking the time to write a great review! Pros: A nice spot on the western slope of the valley, seated at shaded, distanced tables. Cons: Everything else. Really. First the deliberate confusion over the actual owner, which is The Wine Group, a huge conglomerate. This is a showpiece property, which may produce some wine, but our host (who was robotic and disengaged) alluded to more production in the Central Valley.
The stinginess of this place is off any chart. For $40, we got 5 thimble-size pours which combined would not have been more than a half-glass. This is gouging by any measure, especially for very un-remarkable wine being sold at insanely high prices for the mediocre quality. We made a big mistake, and hoping to warn others.

Dear DKBerman –
I read your review with a heavy heart. My family has been operating our winery for over 40 years. I work here every day with my nieces and employees many of who have been here for over 20 yrs. Without getting into a nuanced discussion on market consolidations, increased competition, and environmental threats, we have partnered with TWG to ensure a future for my family and the vineyards we have worked so hard to establish. As for your tasting experience, I am sorry you were less than thrilled with our wines' quantity and quality. The pours are measured and an industry-standard so as not to intoxicate our guests. I apologize if you find this amount wanting. I would like to extend to you an invitation to come back and be my personal guest and see if I can change your mind about our wines and convince you how seriously we are about making wines that truly reflect the authenticity of this beautiful place.
Sincerely,
Chris Benziger

We had heard many good things about this winery and came away utterly disappointed. I applaud their commitment to biodynamics and hope they continue to be a leader going forward. Biodynamic wines are some of our favorites, but unfortunately we have no idea if Benziger wines are any good because the amount poured in each glass was so so small that we could not get the full taste of each wine. I noticed in a previous review the response was their pours are the “industry standard.” We are in the middle of visiting both Napa and Sonoma and have been to over a dozen wineries. No other place has come close to being this small of a pour. I am not looking to get inebriated by any means, but I would like enough poured so that I can take several sips to get the full experience. This is especially true if you are pouring me your Reserve and Estate Wines, the wines you are most proud to serve. But instead, I have no idea the true complexity and flavor of these wines as I was able to get one normal or two very small sips and could never get every flavor on my palette.
In addition, the whole experience felt cold and corporate. If you are truly a family winery, I did not feel like a guest in your home, but rather a customer standing at the checkout counter. The host did not engage with us at all, but rather mindlessly boasted about the wines and their biodynamic process and never asked us any questions other than perfunctory questions about where we were from. This did two things. First, because he did not ask us any questions about our level of education about wine or biodynamics, he therefore talked down to us. Second, because he did not probe our enjoyment of the wine, he could not figure out wines we enjoy and truly engage with us. Other winery hosts did this tremendously better than Benziger and therefore we walked away with many bottles of their wine. Instead, I walk away with an impression of a winery that is very full of itself and could care less about the individual customer.
Two pluses and thus why it got two stars - the estate is truly beautiful and the host was nice enough to move an umbrella to keep us out of the hot sun.

This is another of the gorgeous sonoma winery with a beautiful location. We arrived about 20 minutes late to our appointment but were well accommodated by our wine pourer Patrick. We were though told that the pouring would be a bit quick since there were subsequent appointments which we thought was very fair.
We tasted 5 wines and were given good explanation on each we were tasting. The white wines were our favorite. After tasting we stopped around the winery and their garden to take some nice pictures. Do visit this winery if you get a chance.

This was our 3rd visit to Benzinger. We have been visiting Sonoma for 40 years and have often stayed at the Jack London Lodge in Glen Ellen and walked up the hill to Benzinger. The first time we visited was on a Platypus Wine tour. This was a quick Covid Safe getaway and we very much enjoyed our tasting at Benzinger. The fee is $30pp and our host Dave was fantastic. The patio is beautiful. While in the area we had a nice visit to nearby Jack London Historic Park and enjoyed a drink on the Creekside patio at the Saloon at Jack London Lodge. Very fun and Covid Safe too!

I had a terrible experience at this winery. The staff did. It seem to care too much about the customers. Also the serving size were the smallest I have ever seen.
I would not recommend this winery to anyone. Please take your business elsewhere, there are many wineries around this area where you will be treated better.

We went on the Tribute Estate Tour and it was fantastic. It’s a long tour we’re they take you all over the complex and explain the parts. Our guide Tim was. Rey knowledgeable and did a great job of explaining and engaging our group. I learned a lot about their practices and wines. We stopped often and sampled the wine and saw where the grapes were grown. We ended up with additional samples and any other questions. This was a great time. It’s was interesting and engaging. And the wine was fantastic. I would recommend going to the winery

We went to six wineries in Napa and Sonoma and this was our hands-down favorite. The farm is absolutely breathtaking and incredibly interesting, and the wines are delicious. We did a Tribute Tour and Mike was a wonderful guide - a truly gifted storyteller.

We'll be staying in Glen Ellen in August...visiting our son for the first time in CA. Would LOVE suggestions on top recommended activities for the area. Thanks so much!

Ironically, I will be visiting Maine in late August. Glen Ellen is a great little town. Both Jack London State Park and Sonoma Regional Park are right there. Many wineries to visit in Glen Ellen and Kenwood. One of my favorites in Glen Ellen is the Benziger Tram Tour. Depending on when in August, you might catch a Broadway Under the Stars performance in Jack London State Park. I just saw a show last weekend and it is fantastic. Schedule and tickets can be found online. The group is Transcendence. I have tried almost every restaurant in Glen Ellen and they are all good. Top recommendations are the Glen Ellen Star or Fig Cafe. There is also an Asian themed botanical garden in Kenwood.
You are only 10-15 minutes from the town of Sonoma, which is well worth visiting to see the plaza. It is full of history, good food and good wine. The Tuesday night farmer's market is a "not to be missed" event.

Do you allow picnics? If so can you tell me the parameters? (For a few, with a tasting, no charge, with a tour, for members, etc)... thanks!

Hi Charles. Yes, we do have a wine club...in fact, we have three different clubs for you to choose from! You can find out more about our wine clubs on our website or in our tasting room. We also ship to Southern CA. Hope to see you at the winery soon!

We will be a group of four (Two adult daughters and my husband and I). My husband will not be participating in the wine tasting as he is the designated driver. We would like to take the Partners tour and tasting so I am asking how to arrange that with one non-participant in the tasting part of the experience. And how long should one expect to spend at your vineyard? We will be driving up from San Francisco stopping in Muir Woods along the way. Would a 1:30pm time slot be reasonable and would that be available on June 13 2016, my younger daughter's birthday?
Written 26 May 2016
Thank you for contacting us about the Partners Tour. You should anticipate being on property for about 1.5 hours. The Partners Tour is an immersive tour of the property that includes our vineyard and wine cave and it takes a bit to see it all!
Currently, we do have June 13th availability on June 13th on the 1:15 and 3:15 tour. If you are driving up that morning from San Francisco, and planning on making a stop along the way, I would suggest the 3:15 tour.
Because the Partner's Tour is limited to only 8 guests, we do not have an option for non-tasters. The fee is $50/person. Currently, we are running a special if you book online which lowers the fee to $40/person. You can book online through our website.
I would book soon as our time slots are filling up quickly! Please let me know if there is anything else I can assist with.
Thanks!
Michelle

Is the tour pricing per couple or person? What is the wine trolley??
Written 15 February 2016
it's per person, and include wine tasting (over 21). I would love to go there again; informative, interesting, welcoming, and good wine. Well worth the money I would say
