A real Gem

Tylissos Archaelological site is a lovely smaller site relatively close to Heraklion and not a hard drive up the lower hills. We incorporated it with the other places in the vicinity and made a day out of it. It was a 4€ entrance fee per person and the ticket office lent us a guide book which we could dip into as we went around. However if you would rather not use the book there are modern notice boards which are written in both Greece and English showing the plan of the buildings in front of you, pictures of the artefacts found in them and a potted history. Only parts are cordonned off and we were able to walk through the Minoan houses fairly freely. It had been raining and the magnificent cistern was filling up with water via a very workable drain. It felt completely unspoilt, quiet with few people or tours around. A very clean toilet within the site. The people at the ticket office were extremely helpful. From the moment I asked if I could buy the guide book at the ticket office on the way out because I was really interested they immediately gave me a new copy, looked for more information and absolutely refused to let me to pay. They then enthusiastically talked to us about the the renovations and the area which was really interesting. From the site you have charming views over the hills. For cat lovers, two sleek very friendly site cats wandered around enjoying the lavender and thyme and ended up stretched out across the ticket office shelf. Well worth visiting.

interesting but no happiness

It's not because ruins that you cannot have humour! We read the text, we were interesting by all of this site. In old castle, children, adultes can laugh without problem. Here, the personal confuse church or antique place and ruins of villa, city ... so just open your hart on mind... thanks

What a gem of a place!
A true hidden secret of Minoan archaeology just a 15 minutes ride from the crowds of Herakleion on the way to Anogeia.
If you want to treat yourself with some marvelous archaeology and excellent service from the first rate staff of the site then do yourself a favor and visit this place.

Peaceful & quiet

We went on a weekday, & were the only visitors. Very clean & well presented & only €2 entry - my 12 year old son was free of charge.
Much smaller than Knossos, but perfectly formed.

This is a wonderful stop if you in a car. 15 minutes from Heraklion. Lots of information provided. You only need 30 minutes.

Nice!

Interesting and quiet. There are the remains of three houses that are still very recognizable. There is good explanation on site especially with the booklet we could borrow from the reception. It is nice for kids too because they are allowed to run around :) Worth a visit.

Good but a tad muddy
Nov. 2016 • Friends
Went to this site after it had been raining. The site was a tad muddy but it was well worth the visit. Being able to see the Minoan site was fantastic and actually being able to walk through the buildings was pretty awesome as well. It is a bit hard to find so I recommend a gps or good map

A minoan gem

Though tiny by comparison with the better known Minoan sites Tylissos benefits from being well presented, accessible and easy to understand. Also you will not be overwhelmed by tour groups!

A very good place for those who are intrested in historical and arheological things. Cheap the entrance, only 2 euros a person
