I've seen chunks of petrified wood elsewhere, but none bigger than a breadbox. The first few I saw here in Calistoga on the trail behind the gift shop were largish, but not overly impressive. About as big as a telephone pole, really. But a few...More

OK, we have never seen a petrified forest, we just don't get them in the UK, so we thought we would pay a visit. You get a map and the trail is about a mile long. You see some trees that were covered in volcanic...More

Fascinating privately owned site: petrified sequoias of an extinct species are preserved by volcanic ash from an enormous eruption thousands of years ago from Mt. St. Helena. The eruption was similar to those of Vesuvius and Oregon's Mt. St. Helens, violent and explosive, which blasted...More

As petrified forests go, this one is well documented and easy to view. The museum could do a better job of explaining what else lived in the forest and why it was lost.

My husband and I were staying nearby in Guerneville. I talked hubby in to going, as I’d seen the Petrified Forest in AZ when I was little. I learned so much! Well, first, did you know that there are *several* such places, worldwide? I know...More

A tangible representation of the power of volcanic explosions and its ash, as well as the power of time. There is an uphill climb, not too steep though. Very manageable with the right footwear. Worth checking out!
