The Observatory is easily seen from much of the lake on Big Bear's north shore. However, it is now just used for scientific studies. If you are a scientist, there are proposal times/dates for your possible use of the observatory. But, the area around it is beautiful and a lovely walk.

Due to the inclement weather the area was closed. Otherwise, it would've been a good place to visit. Nonetheless, we were in the vicinity, except for the road, everything was snowed-in. We could still see the structure just not able to go inside.

Loved the area surrounding the telescope, but sadly, no tours. Would like to see this important tool featured more.

Although it was closed, walk down to the beach! No information about hours and such, very interesting building! Nice beach for a walk and photo ops.

Scientists refer to it as BBSO, the Big Bear Solar Observatory. It is operated by a group from the New Jersey Institute of Technology called the Center for Solar-Terrestrial Research (CSTR). Yes, lots of acronyism. In short, they study the sun with instrumentation and data resources from the surface and extending to the Earth's atmosphere. You have to really work... More

No hours posted; no answer when attempting to call. I went on their website to find out info. and was told to call for tour arrangements. Have been coming to Big Bear for many years and have never been able to make contact.

Very enlightening tour here. There's lots to learn about the sun, and that's what they do here all the time. Students share their interest in the center of our solar system, our prime energy source, the sun. The huge telescope is interesting in itself.

We wanted so badly to go and visit the Solar observatory. This is one of a kind for So Cal. This is a small observatory but its quite interesting. We were told that we had to go there on certain days and certain hours to visit it. Its not open to public on everyday. We saw and took pictures and... More

There aren't many solar observatories in So Cal. This one on the Lake is small, but really interesting. Find out in advance when their visitor hours are and definitely do the tour.

Nice to look at, BUT... You can not get anywhere near it, gated off with watch dog. Does not offer tours anymore unfortunately.
