Without knowing, our GPS took us to Oceanside, CA, from Palm Desert via Hwy 74. We later found out that a lot of people bi-pass the mountains by taking Hwys 10 & 79. We SO happy that we drove the 74 Route! The mountains are...More

This is a fantastic car ride from Desert Palms up into the mountains. Starting in Desert Palms the drive takes about three hours one way including stops. You will get to see pine forests with pines not seen in the Eastern US. Also very long...More

We've driven on some pretty cool twisty roads during our travels and the first several miles headed west out of Palm Desert rank among the neatest. For some reason, the speed limit is 55 MPH but you'll rarely want to hit that if you're interested...More

We enjoyed travelling this route. The scenery is magnificent. Go prepared though, there are few services along the road.

We usually take this drive starting from Palm Desert to I-10 on the other side. This time we reversed it and this will be my favorite way! As you come down the mountain all the scenic views are on the right which makes it easier...More

For over thirty years when I visit the desert I say I want to make the drive to San Diego from Palm Desert.... and last week I did! Although way too windy for my taste during those first 19 miles, I survived and enjoyed the...More

We were in our rental vehicle. The roads are in good shape, just narrow at points so take it easy. There are places to pull off if you have people tailing you. If you are just going up to the top for the view, it is about... More
