When we are traveling to Palm Springs or back to San Diego we always love taking the Palms To Pines Byway. It's quite a fun drive with the twist and turns. You have excellent views of the desert either driving up or down. There are...More
Had a wonderful flight with Mike,,seeing the valley and it’s far reaching surroundings, is amazing, being able to get up close and circle the mountain tops is indescribable. Mike was friendly, informative, and knowledgeable about flying a glider and the area. Highly recommend this way...More
I like this road. We drove from Palm Desert and for the initial part of our drive to San Diego drove the Palms to Pines Scenic Byway. There are vista pints on the drive.
There are some curves,e tc. but all the more fun.
We took this road on July 4 en route to the parade in Idlewild (definitely worth a visit in itself) and couldn't stop as we had to get there in time for the show. However we LOVED it so much, we drove the route again...More
My husband and I 'accidentally' took this drive from Palm Desert to the scenic lookout and then later in the 'purposely' took it over the mountains to the coast on a day trip. It is gorgeous with many switchback roads making it fun to drive....More
Without knowing, our GPS took us to Oceanside, CA, from Palm Desert via Hwy 74. We later found out that a lot of people bi-pass the mountains by taking Hwys 10 & 79. We SO happy that we drove the 74 Route! The mountains are...More
This is a fantastic car ride from Desert Palms up into the mountains. Starting in Desert Palms the drive takes about three hours one way including stops. You will get to see pine forests with pines not seen in the Eastern US. Also very long...More
We've driven on some pretty cool twisty roads during our travels and the first several miles headed west out of Palm Desert rank among the neatest. For some reason, the speed limit is 55 MPH but you'll rarely want to hit that if you're interested...More
Take this drive if you have a car and a 1/2 day (or more) to spend on this fun road. There is much to see and it's amazing to go from the desert floor below up to the majestic pine trees and snow (March). Stop...More
We started on 243 (in Banning) and ended in Palm Desert. The beginning was the beautiful pine area with many beautiful vistas! The road has many turnouts to let other cars pass. We did a little over the speed limit and some cars flew by,...More

We were in our rental vehicle. The roads are in good shape, just narrow at points so take it easy. There are places to pull off if you have people tailing you. If you are just going up to the top for the view, it is about 10 minutes up the hill from the base. If you are driving all the way to Paradise for the cafe it takes about 40 minutes.
