Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We had a good time taking a walk on Shattuck Avenue. This is a nice street with various cafes, restaurants, and some shops.

We had a superb dinner at Agrodolce Osteria. Food was amazing; service was too.

My husband and I were staying in Berkeley for 4 nights. I had a business meeting and a class to attend, then we thought we would take some time and walk around the town. It was recommended to us that we walk Shattuck Avenue. We scheduled this for our free day on Sunday. We did not arrive until about 2 pm, as we had gotten diverted to another area first. Thank goodness we did. This street has pockets of better sections, but in general, it is very run down. There are lots of little restaurants, most catering to the college crowd and rightly so - but the Avenue seemed to have lost much of it's charm. It is over run with homeless people of all ages and sorts - those that sit quietly on their spots, and others that wander and rummage, looking for a hand out, and then there are those that shout and cause a ruckus - none of which are good for the tourist trade - or the college students. I would not want to walk this Avenue at night by myself. There were not many nice stores or original shoppes - many more restaurants than anything else. We got hot and tired and tried to find a bar to sit in some cool a/c space, nursing a drink while we cooled off - but we did not have much luck. Lots of places to have a drink - but they seemed to feature hard uncomfortable stools or chairs and no a/c. We ended up choosing a Starbucks as it was air conditioned and I could at least get an iced tea. It did the trick and we then continued on our way. We were disappointed and finally turned off Shattuck and onto Center Avenue, where we found more restaurants, but at least this street was not as run down. If you are visiting Berkeley, I would recommend driving down Shattuck - just to take a look, but spend your time and money elsewhere - like 4th Street.

Well, what can I say. It's hell on earth, but a must-see. Shattuck, along with Telegraph, College, University and San Pablo, are among the dozen or so streets which form the core of the amazingly-diverse place. There's virtually anything to eat that you can think of from just about any continent; and plenty of cheap eats along with high-end eats too. Just a few blocks on either side of Shattuck combine with it to produce years of possible experiences. If one is young, there simply is love in the air everywhere, and clubs and poetry readings and music venues of every shade. Crime, homelessness, alcoholism, panhandling and drug addiction are utterly out-of-control. I'm comfortable, (or at least as comfortable as folks could reasonably get), in ultra-high-crime areas, and so I feel easy enough around there. But it can be pretty grim at times, even so. The Bay Area is very confusing in this way, in that it is allegedly the heart of liberalism, but the poor are treated with almost scientific cruelty, and so this is the result. In the end, the money that would go to help the poor is eaten up in no-accountability civic contracting. The laws are written to make what we would call stealing quite legal. So, by the time the contractors eat up all the resources by extending projects to ten times their expense and projected duration, there's nothing left for the poor. Even with all these problems, Berkeley is just something every world tourist has to experience at least once, and Shattuck, with all it's beauty and flaws, is a part of that experience.

From Chez panisse to the Cheeseboard to Berkeley bowl. This is a street where you can find lots of shops and restaurants and mingle with the locals. Great street for dining, shopping and just a walk around the city.

Downtown Berkeley should be an embarrassment both to the city and the university. Boarded up shops, scores of street people sleeping on the sidewalk and trash everywhere. The bloom is off the rose in this college town and it's hard to see how the university continues to attract such excellent faculty and students with this as it's entrance.

My wife and I visited the Pyramid Alehouse on a weekend afternoon. When we arrived, the outdoor patio looked inviting it 1/2 of the tables were open, but when we asked to be seated there we were told that we would have to wait for a table to be cleaned. This seemed peculiar, as several appeared to be clean and ready for patrons, but we thought it would just be a few minutes. After waiting for 20 minutes, we unfortunately decided to cut them some slack and to be seated inside, where almost all of the tables were empty and, apparently, clean. We I approached the hostess she apparently assumed that I was going to complain about the wait, and she irritably informed me that there was a couple that was entitled to be seated before us on the patio. This couple had arrived after us, and in any case it still was not clear why both couples were kept waiting with at least 5 empty and clean tables on the patio.

Once the hostess let me finish my sentence, we were seated inside by a surly assistant. We then sat for 20 minutes until someone brought us water and took our drink order. We then sat for another 15 minutes (by my watch, as by this time I was keeping track of time) until we received our beers, which were mediocre. The food was equally slow to arrive and was, at best, average. Finally, as we were leaving, my wife, bought a Pyramid shirt, mostly because it was only $5 and in a cute package. When we got home, she opened it and found that it was not the size that was labeled on the package.
If you want to visit a brewpub in Berkeley, go to the Jupiter, where the beer is superb, the service is excellent and the food is creative and delicious.

I moved to Berkeley in 1965. The current local government has attempted to make
Shattuck the Northern California Magnet for HOMELESS, for the last 25 years.
They have succeeded. Every block is filled with homeless, living, eating, urinating etc.
Nobody, who lives here, goes to Shattuck anymore. It is only for the college students and the homeless.
I would visit another local spot instead of this filthy garbage heap.

If you walk Shattuck Avenue from Vine street down to Bancroft, you will find every level of restaurant, from Chez Panisse (world-class) to take-out pizza (for starving students). You will also meet every kind of humanity from absent-minded professors to street people.

People and food (plus movies and theater), that's just about it. There is no shopping worth noting.

As a resident of a nearby city, I just parked in a residential neighborhood of this city for 5 minutes and got back from the store to find a Berkeley meter maid writing up a ticket for my parking where there is "street cleaning"! For $49! Nor would she decline to issue the ticket, when I explained I had no idea and didn't live in Berkeley.
This is typical of how this city makes its money, and treats visitors. Go elsewhere if you're in a car.

I've been around Berkeley long enough to remember when Shattuck was the city's main commercial thoroughfare, a place for comprehensive shopping and restaurants. The presence of a BART station right in the middle of downtown added to its convenience. But over the years, the grime and seediness of Telegraph Avenue has seeped westward and now encompasses Shattuck as well. A range of solid businesses closing up shop and being replaced by fast food joints; homeless and aggressive panhandlers a presence on every block; graffiti and trash far too common. On the plus side, it's nice to see cultural investments like Berkeley Rep and Freight & Salvage, but coming out the door late at night it's no fun having to look over your shoulder constantly or wondering if your car has been broken into....again.
