After a day long bus journey to travel to Cajamarca along hairpin bends and arriving in a dark busy bus compound it was a delight to "discover" the Plaza de Armas and its buildings with beautiful old colonial wooden & stone architecture. No there arent lots of coffee shops/tourist paraphenalia but for me thats what made a refreshing break from other more over run tourist destinations in Peru. Cajamarca old city was more than I'd hoped, plenty of locals coming and going, the north end is full of tour offices haggling for national and international business for day trips, flights etc. 90 degrees sits the cathedral of St Catherine quite squat and highly decorated - next to this sits a restaurant with enclosed glass terrace giving the area a modern feel. On the other side sit the wooden police admin building and the huge waiting for its turn for a financial windfall that may see the gates open again. N.E corner access to a bank and ATM's next block down. The south end gives access to several narrow street that run parallel uphill ( follow Dos de Mayo) to the view point hill of St Apolonia with numerous small restaurants, beautifully crafted steps, gardens and craft/artisan markets. In 3 days my friend and I ran across 3 demonstrations & processions - the last on Nov 16th a full scale childrens reinactment of Spanish soldiers under Francisco Pizarro invading & slaughtering the native peoples of Cajamarca in 1632 at a feast in the name the emporor capturing Atahualpa and him being led to "the ransom room" forced to convert to Christianity. What a bonus - the "soldiers" on horseback and screaming "natives" in the square quite a sight on a rainy day. Plenty of eating just off Dos de Mayo with friendly attentive staff to help.

Anyone visiting is bound to show up here. Obviously the center of town. As plazas go, this one is well above average. Not crowded with as many vendors hassling you as you might see in Cusco. Weather is critical to your entire experience here. When it’s nice it’s awesome. When not, it’s depressing.

Beautiful center around the Plaza de armas which is telling some interesting history. Some nice activities can be done around Cajamarca. In general it’s affordable and not overcrowded, good restaurant options and accommodations available. Definitely worth to think about to visit the region (also Chachapoyas ;-). It’s reachable easily from the coast or from Lima with good long distance buses.
Cajamarca was really nice and we felt save.
Overall, we were very happy to have done a stop in Cajamarca.

Classic colonial plaza mayor - baroque cathedral on one side, 17th century church on the other. Well tended gardens and ancient fountain - and this is the very place where the Spanish executed Atahualpa in 1533. Pause a while here and digest.

The plaza de armas of Cajamarca is very nice, so much history contained within itself. Atahualpa was captured by Pizarro in the Plaza de Armas, so you can imagine all the history this place has.

This is the center of the historic city, and it's a nice clean and safe plaza. There are some businesses on the streets around the plaza. The neighborhood is good, although I would say that if you go north about 2 blocks it starts to go downhill.

Beatutiful gardens and great meeting place for locals and visitors. A lot of historical information is provided in both English and Spanish. Surrounded by two Cathedrals, and a view of Cerro de Santa Apolonia.

Enjoy plaza de armas de cajamarca, have a nice view, sometimes they offer comparsas or folkloric music from schools.

After a long drive it was nice to see this pictoresk center of the town with its evening lit cathedral.
