Swindle. 4€ for visiting one of the oldest archaeological sites in Greece (which being World Heritage doesn’t seem much) is too much considering that there is no indication sign or detailed plan of the megaron and each structure of the palace and constructions around, no sunshade built (not even a simple one made of vine) along the visitor’s space, and all seems abandoned (probably is not valued enough for the government after getting the UNESCO ‘title’), even the worker inside, that could have guide us a little bit, didn’t seem to know much about anything there, all very basic. The pictures to sell the tickets look like you can go through cool passages etc, but we just found the passage closed and with scaffolding around (even pics were difficult to take). The best preserved place is the wall, which can be seen for free from outside. And, of course, I don’t reccommend to try to make trekking from or to Nafplion as we read in some website... no green paths, nothing indicated, almost all through busy highway, very dangerous. We didn’t have a good experience.

Very interesting old archaeological site, possibly Heracles' place of birth. I was impressed by the thickness of the walls (7m thick). There is not much left beside the exterior walls, made of huge stones, but it is still worth visiting. The entrance fee is 4 euro per person.

You can access the site easily by taking the bus from Nafplio for Euro1.60 but you’ll walk 500 metres along the main road to the entrance. Don’t turn right when you get off the bus like we did, it was hot and exhausting taking that wrong turn. The whole site amazes, how did the Mycenae lift those massive blocks into place? They are 8 metres thick! It’s well worth a visit, but we ended up asking the ticket seller to call us a taxi back to town which cost Euro13.00 which was excessive, but worth it.

Close to Nafplio (you can see Nafplio from the top of the fortress) is Ancient Tiryns.

It was worth the 40 minutes or so it took to explore this place on the way back from Athens. No museum on site really, but there are some cool places that you can explore and the path takes you down through/under the wall.

There is an ongoing archaeological dig taking place here, so parts were closed when we visited but that didn't detract.

It was amazing to visit here as later in our trip we'd go to the Athens Archaeological museum where they have on display a lot of the things that were found here. It was significant in its day and for us - something we didn't want to miss.

Plus, nice views of the surrounds from Argos to Nafplio.

Although smaller and less impressive as for example Mycenae, it is interesting enough to visit. The cyclopic walls are the highlights. For the rest of the excavation, leave it to your imagination. The artifacts found here can be seen in the archeological museum of Nafplio.

A large site which is well worth a visit owing to the extensive layout and amazing walls, built with enormous stones. At the height of its occupation 10000 inhabitants lived there. The finds from various excavations are displayed in the Archeological Museum in Nafplio.

Went yesterday and after you pay two euros you find out that unless you can climb, you can’t see much. The entire left access is closed, so all that’s left is the stone stairs with no rail. Plus you can see all these things from the road. Just a cool drive by

The massive cyclopean walls of this ancient Mycenae palace fortress are worth a visit! It is a short 10 minute drive north of romantic Nafplio.

A gentle pathway leads you up to the top of the Acropolis. But watch your step as there are uneven surfaces. There are a few display panels in English which tell you what you are seeing.

There is no museum on site. Artifacts are in the Archeological Museum in downtown Nafplio.

Clean washroom stalls are available on site. Lots of parking just off the main highway.

Nafplio has three outstanding sites to visit in its vicinity - Mycenae, Epidaurus and Palamidi fortress, and they overwhelm every other.
We were driving from Mycenae to Nafplio when accidentally bumped on Tiryns. The view from outside is just enough - the 3000 y old Cyclopean walls and that's it. After Mycenae it's seems like a waste of time.

This is great for a quick visit as it isn't that big. An hour or so is plenty. It is the remains of a palace a few hundred years b.c. Good value too and even better as part of a local special ticket that lasts 3 days.

A good site for butterflies too.
