Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We had two hours on Plakias Beach. If driving here from Rethymno (as we did), look for the route through the gorge.
The beach is dark sand and stony. Nothing special. There are sun beds and brollies for rent, or free as customers of the “Ammo” beach bar. The sea is lovely.
We spent over an hour swimming and playing ball. A memorable visit!

We visited when there was a huge heatwave in Crete. We were staying in Rethimno where there was no breeze and really high temperatures (40 degrees plus). I read a review about this beach as always having a breeze so we drove there.
It took about 35 minutes from Rethimno old town centre but the drive was spectacular. Some amazing countryside views, through olive groves and winding roads through the Kotsifou gorge! Amazing in itself. (Tip - Stop on the side of the road for pictures).
The beach was stunning, sandy (very few pebbles so no need for beach shoes), beautiful clear water - excellent for snorkling, especially by the rocks to the left (although there is a nudist section here too), incredible mountain views (of which there were rock climbers) and even a visit from a very large eagle like bird.
The beach was so quiet and even in the middle of the day did not get busy. Hundreds of sunbeds available at 10 Euros for 2 beds, a table and umbrella with beach service for drinks.
The sea was a lot colder than Rethimno but that was welcomed and the breeze was mostly cool and kept us from sweating too much. Ocassionally, the breeze turned hot for a few minutes but then turned cool again.
We only went in one taverna, which was expensive but had comfy seats and excellent views. No problems for parking as huge space all along the beach.
So good we went back the very next day.

At the beach lifeguards who give sun beds for rent were very rude. It seemed to me they were judging by our looks, because we are from Kazakhstan and have Asian phenotype. One of them even asked if I understand English, while I was clearly speaking English to him from the very beginning. So unpleasant and disappointing to feel racism at this time. They kept coming and disturbing us, totally ruined the mood. The issue is that they didnt let us sit on the sun bed 2 people at a time, while other people on the beach were sitting freely without being reprimanded. The funniest thing is there were exactly 5 of us and we were trying to hide from the sun, they had no extra umbrella for us, even though we asked and were willing to pay. I would never return here again and dont recommend to visit to anyone.

Nice beach and as staying within walking distance we used for 5 days on and off on our 7nt break.
Nice views out across the bay, trekking routes close by.
Beach sand and space gets wider towards the East side (Small naturist area also used by others)
Sunbeds available along the beach some free with drinks etc from the beach bar/restaurants others around 8 Euros for two per day.
Lovely clear warm water reached ok just hopping over a few shoreline pebbles in some areas, then just sand and shallow.
Some days a breeze picks up but its rather nice as cooling.
During our week no sudden guts at all.

Very nice beach. Lots of restaurants/taverns are along tge shore. It is a sandy beach but with pebbles, so a bit difficult to walk in without proper shoes because it hurts.
Generally 2 sunbeds & umbrella cost 15 EUR in August 2023.
Bit difficult to drive there on the curvy roads

We visited Plakias during August 2020 with our 4 year old son. We enjoyed a lot that the beach was exactly in front of our hotel (Alianthos Beach hotel). Plenty of sunbeds, nice beach, with lovely sand for our child to play. The bad was it was very very windy, so unfortunately we had a lot of "sandblasting" on us!!! however, we did enjoy the calmness of the area, the fact that everything is nearby on foot and it is not so crowded. Shower available. Do not miss to visit alianthos horse riding!

NOT recommended for a family trip with kids. While the beach is nice and clean (contrary to what some reciews said, it’s not dirty at all) and it’s easy to get into the water, rather shallow entry. It is ALWAYS windy… and i am not talking about a nice summer breeze. Some days it’s very windy, others it’s incredibly windy and sometimes you can’t even step outside because everything gets blown away. Maybe surfers paradise but our kids hated… can’t play on the beach because the wind blows sand into their eyes, hats and caps get ripped from their heads, sun-umbrellas get thrown into the air. I think i have made myself clear… wind-hell

Had a great time on this beach, it was the highlight of our holiday. Conditions were good with slight breeze and big waves, a bit rough but not excessive, had good fun jumping/riding them. Views of the bay are amazing. Entering and exiting the water is a little tricky with a 1m line of stones but then its all sand.

We wanted to get south and took the bus to Plakias beach for a day trip. Bus service for public is cheap and easy to use. Very comfortable too. The trip took about an hour and we were rewarded with a drive through a lovely terrain including a gorge to reach the other side! A nice sandy beach with suitable restaurants and services for us to enjoy along with a swim. A great day out. This beach may not be as spectacular as others in Greece but it was fine. All clean too!

Nice quiet beach. €6 for 2 sunbeds and a parasol. Check as some restaurants will give a voucher for this if you buy a drink from them.
Beach is quite stoney so would suggest water shoes. Windy often so the sea is choppy but really good fun!
As an aside, there is no Bureau de Change. Most places take card and there are plenty of ATM's. Wouldn't recommend bringing cash to change up.

hei alle som har feriert i Plakias iår 2024. Jeg etterlyser anmeldelser om hvordan varmen har vært denne sommeren. Skal reise dit neste lørdag, redd det blir en helsefare om ekstrem varme. Blir kjempetakknemlig for svar. På forhånd takk

Hi everyone! :)
Is it possible to hire a taxi in Plakias village to drive me to and fro Agios Nikolas church above the village?
Are there boats from Plakias to bring me to Preveli Palm Beach? How much does it cost and are the boats back from the beach to Plakias in the afternoon?
Thank you!

Rádi bychom se dozvěděli , jaké jsou vlny na jihu ostrova . Zde na severu se kvůli velkým vlnám nedá koupat

Photos seem to show different beaches ranging from a horrible strip of grey sand next to a road to a much more scenic and quiet area. I'm not keen on hearing traffic noise whilst relaxing on the beach - are there sandy areas which are quiet but still have sunbeds? Is the whole beach have some traffic noise?

It is a very long beach. The further eastward you go the more sand (less stones) you'll find 😎
Plentiful sunbed, selection of tavenas, beach bars but overall QUIET & LAID BACK with great weather. Tho can be a little breezy at times...... in a good way 😊

does anyone know if dogs are allowed on the beach?

Hi, when i was at the beach I saw people with dogs. I don't know if it is not allowed, but I'm sure that there is nobody who checks.

Written 6 April 2017
Yes!
Also easy from Heraklion too. Just need to see which flight times suit you; then make the judgement call of which airport you fly to..... you can book your taxi online if you prefer. Easy 😎
