- Akshay SharmaNew Delhi, India11,054 contributionsA marvellous place to visitWhen you start a tour of Hampi this is the first historical place you would visit. Hiring a guide is worth the money as the guide will explain you the nitty gritty behind the temple the past, the present and the future. It is not only architecturally beautiful but has lots of historical importance attached to it. Even to this date devotees say prayers here.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 3 February 2024

No doubt its one of the best UNESCO sites in India. Virupaksha temple is a Hindu Religious place Temple has huge Gopura (entrance architecture). Inside the temple one can see several deities, including Bhuvaneshwari (Karnataka State Deity) one can witness paintings on the ceiling of the madapam. good stone carvings on both side of the mandapa.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 21 March 2024
- SagarikaChennai (Madras), India60 contributionsMagnificent, GloriousVirupaksha Temple is the main attraction of Hampi, the first time we saw it during our Hampi by the night - light and sound. As you walk through Hampi Bazar towards the temple, you are transported back into the golden times of Hampi. The feeling and the vibe, can not be explained. The architecture of the temple is exquisite but its uninterrupted history from the 7th century onwards makes it a pilgrimage for many. Please visit during morning hours as well as evening to enjoy the temple in full glory.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 1 April 2024
- Harsh & LeenaPune, India2,989 contributionsShiv temple on the bank of Tungabhadra river1. One of the main temples in Hampi is devoted to Shivji. It is a marvelous temple. 2. One can park the vehicle and then visit the temple and it takes 15-20 minutes. 3. It is on the bank of river Tungabhadra river. 4. You can see the Lakshmi elephant on the left of the entrance. 5. Whole Hampi is part of UNESCO and is well maintained. You can see rich history of Vijaynagara Empire. 6. Cold water is available at right of entrance 7. I would suggest witnessing the sunrise at Hamkuta hill and then descend down to take blessings of shivji.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 28 August 2024

The only working temple among the marvelous ruins of Hampi. A beautiful Gopuram welcomes you into the realm of serenity and devotion. The ingenuity of Dravidian architecture boggles one’s mind. Once again, to understand the complexity of the historical and architectural aspects, it is recommended to hire a guide. Mere words cannot describe the beauty of this temple so I would post some pictures for an idea.

If history, culture, religion fascinate you then this is a must visit place for you.
Hampi has all the above to offer, and that too in abundance.
So much that you need at least 2 days to tour the whole place.
And it's so beautiful that even after 2 days we couldn't have enough of it.
But as they say - all the good things have to come to an end, so did this tour.
The ancient city has many famous monuments and Unesco heritage sites which tell you why at its peak, it was the world's second-largest city after Beijing.
The well planned city had advanced water supply system, numerous temples, farms and trading markets with huge footfall of foreign traders.
Road from Bengaluru to Hampi is also amazing.

Virupaksha is one of the main temples in Hampi, it is functioning and at the same time they charge everyone an entrance fee.
The structure is monumental, part of the building is clearly a remake, thanks to the general atmosphere everything looks harmonious.
It’s certainly worth a visit, but beware of local holidays, there will be tons of people.
The place is very visited, noisy and touristy.

You are welcomed by the Main carved tower, which can been seen from far across. There is a elephant who blesses you if you offer fruits. The complex is big and it has many beautiful carved temples, where rituals are still performed. Main temple is dedicated to Pampapathi (Shiva), who married Pampadevi (Parvathi) after she did penance.

A natural Shiv Linga shrine from the 7th century grew into the massive Virupaksha temple complex under the Vijayanagara empire.
The largest and probably the only functioning temple in Hampi, the complex attracts a lot of visitors.
The Hampi Bazaar is right outside the temple and what used to a market trading precious metals and stones in the 14th-16th centuries is today a vibrant local goods market.
The diety itself is ensconced in the sanctum sanctorum that can be reached via small side entrances and the crowd just keeps swelling up for the Darshan and it is near to impossible to stand in front of the diety and pray.
The water pond associated with the temple has a single turtle and loads of fishes who can be fed. Just a few metres away is the Tungabhadra river that can be accessed via steps.
A ferry to cross over to the base of the Anjanadri Hills (from where 575 steps take you up to the hill rumoured to be the birthplace of Lord Hanuman) also available but due to the swell of the river and the heavy currents it was not operational.

Virupaksha temple is one of the main attractions of Hampi. It has one of the oldest svayambhu shivlinaga. Lord Ram had worshipped in this temple during his exile from ayodhya. The temple is an architectural marvel. One needs a minimum of two hours to explore the temple. It would be recommended to take a guide along to understand the historical importance of the place. Seperately, there is no climb or stairs for the temple and can be easily visited by elders too.

The temple and surrounding structures are magnificent. The architecture is unbelievable if you take construction was started in 740 AD and this temple is in use since. The religious significance is noted in the amount of people that visit it.

We hired a guide and this temple was part of the tour. Our guide explained the various dynasties that have ruled Hampi. He clicked photos for us. The temple area is well maintained and clean. Intricate carving details were well explained by our guide. We also touched the temple top virtually...you need to hire a guide to experience this fun stuff. Highly recommended place to visit.

Any idea where can stay in Hampi or Hospet ?
which is better.
Written 11 September 2019
We are planning to visit Hampi & Hospet for 2 days, we shall start from Bangalore by train.
Can you please recommend some good hotels or guest houses for family stay?
Suggestions for taxi, auto or any other good options to travel locally would be very helpful.
Thanks
Sudarshan

Sudarshan, since you have only 2 days you should stay at near Hampi I suggest you Hotel Mayura Bhuvaneshwari Kamalpur or Hotel Clark Inn Kamalpur. These two are goods options and Auto is available in front of Hotels. Since you have two day. you should concentrate on Hampi attractions only like Anjaneya Hill is a good option but you can skip due to limited time

1 Day trip to Hampi
We have visited Hampi on 24th Dec 2017 from Hyderabad. One day trip to Hampi. Must visit place in Hampi.
Hosapet is the nearest town (13 kms) to reach Hampi. It has Hosapet Jn Railway station and bus stand also.
There are many momoments in Hampi, But if we give rating/priority for the places which shouldnt miss in hampi as follows, Stone Chariot & Vithala Temple stands in 1st place (need 1 hour atleast) and virupaksha temple in 2nd place (need 1 hour & temple closes between 12 to 2pm), elephant stable & lotus mahal in 3rd place (need 1 hour), Stepped well & Queens Bath in 4th place (need 1 hour), Stone Ganapatathi (15 min), Big Siva Linga (10 min) & Stone Narasimha Swamy (10 min) in 5th place and rest of monoments follows.
No proper mobile network or mobile signals in most of the places in Hampi. We can have Toilet facility out side this temple but not inside. Next Toilets we can find at Lotus Mahal and Elephant Stables. Females can note this point.
23rd Night we got a train (17603 KCG YPR Express) from Hyderabad/Kachiguda (9.10 pm) to Hosapet Junction and reached Hosapet Jn next day morning 24th at 8.30 am. We got freshup in the Railway Station Dormitories and hired an auto for the entire day to visit all the places in Hampi. Auto person charged us 900 Rs. We can also hire a Cab (or) Rent Bike (or) Rent By-Cycle. But I will not suggest Bike or By-Cycle because Hampi is a muddy(mud/sand) or dust place. Our cloths, faces, hair etc will get spoiled for sure if you travel Hampi for entire day. Its better to get an Auto (1000 rs approximately for whole day) or Cab/Car (2300 rs approximately for whole day).

I am planning a three day trip to Hampi & Badami in the month of August. Would any one help me in planning the itinerary for three days. Also are is there good connectivity from Badami to Hubli since i will be boarding a flight from Hubli the fourth day in the afternoon.

Well, 3 days are more than enough to explore hampi and badami. I did a solo trip over during the holi weekend. It will require a lot of stamina to walk around in Hampi . So I suggest you can take a cab or an auto rickshaw . August will be rainy season so you have to watch your steps too in Badami as it will be a mini trekking experience.
I stayed at Hospet and Hampi as there is good connectivity of buses between Hospet and Hampi .

3 days will be little too less to cover all the places. But if you're still want to do the same, then reach Hampi/Badami whichever is nearest to your place and cover Badami, aihole, and pattadkal in 1.5 days and then travel to Hampi which is 3-4 hrs journey and cover the rest of Hampi in a day or so. In my opinion you need 2 full days for Hampi, 1 full day for Badami.

i am planning to visit hampi on friday. i just have one day to stay. i travel from bellary. can anyone guide from which point should i start exploring and the places which i can cover?
Written 18 October 2017
Hi
Start with Vijaya Vithalla complex.. it will require 3-4 hours.
Then visit Palace area which will require around 2-3 hours.
In the evening you can visit Saswkalu ganapati, krishna mandir, bajarpeth and virupaksh mandir.
From the hill near saswekalu ganpati you can enjoy sunset.
At the end visit virupaksh mandir.
You can cover all the places in one day.
I hope you are not starting too late in the morning. in 6-7 hours you can cover all places.
