This is a must visit place at the sunset. You will see a lot of people gathering during the sunset hours. It gives wonderful view of golden light falling on the Hampi ruins.
It is an easy climb and can be done by all.

Leading up from the Sasivekalu Ganesha mandir are steps cut into the large granite boulders and once you climb them, you are on top of the Hemakuta Hill.
Many temples dedicated to Lord Shiva rest atop this hill and many climb it in evening to take in the beautiful sunset. Hence it is also called Sunset Point.
From here you can get stunning views of the Balakrishna temple on one side but the main view is of the majestic Virupaksha temple complex on the banks of the mighty Tungabhadra, which can be seen flowing along its meandering course.
It is possible to climb down the hill via steps directly to reach the main entrance of the Virupaksha temple or you can return to the car park and drive down to the car park.

It has two approaches, one from Ganesha idol's side (mustard ganesha: as called by locals) and the other approach is from near Virupaksha temple. I would recommend climbing from Ganesha's side and enjow the landscape and then, walk down towards Virupaksha temple side.

The Hemakuta Hill offers panoramic view of the surroundings. Most importantly, this also offers the best view of the Virupaksha temple, making it a quintessential photo stop. The hill is also dotted with many quaint temple ruins worthy of further exploration. There is also a sunset point so you may want to check it out during late afternoon.

Wonderful view at the top of the hill. Hemakuta hill is adjacent to Virupaksha temple. Trek to the top is very easy compared to Matanga hill or Anjanadri hill. The hillock has many Jain temples also a beautiful sunset point. At the other end of the hill, you can find Sasivekalu Ganesha idol and continue further to Sri Krishna temple.

Just behind the Virupaksha Temple, this hill is just a few easy steps up, and leads to a big area of many ruined temples. It is easy to slowly wander around, explore and enjoy, with beautiful views. Nice for sunrise and sunset too.

It is a scenic place when ever you go. You have many small temples, arches and each of them gives different views and options to take a lot of pics and DP.
You will see Shiv, Ganesh and Jain temples here.
You can visit the hill for both sunset and sun rise. To reach this hill you have to pass a small structure through which only one car can pass.
Whole hampi is very spiritual with a modern touch.
It is situated near to Virupaksha temple and you can descend to reach Virupaksha temple also.
In monsoon it can be slippery so take care of kids. However, anyone can visit.
Older people can also go as there are steps and many places to sit and enjoy.
Do carry water as it can get sweaty a lot no matter when you visit it. Avoid it in the afternoon.
It was supposed to be built between 9-14 century by Vijayanagra Empire and is quite different than any other place.

We arrived here early around 7 am
It was so peaceful
On the top of the main temple this spot offers a nice view point
Different kind of architecture
Nice walk
Pity there is too much plastic and rubbish everywhere

One place I was glad I didn't know what to expect while climbing it. For the other places to see while researching, I inevitably happened to see pictures on the internet. But this wasn't a part of the plan. We saw a lot of people walking towards it and since we were late to go to Matanga hill, we decide to check it out. The climb was a little steep and tricky. But once we reached the summit (it isn't that high, barely takes 10-15 mins to get there) we were surprised to see how big it was and by the amount of people who were already there. The best spots to view the sunset was obviously taken! Besides the sunset view, you don't expect to see the various stone structures, lush green grass patches in between, cows (how on Earth did they get there?!!) and carvings here and there on the rocks. It was mesmerizing to say the least. My imagination was going riot trying to picture in my mind's eye how the place would have been in its peak of glory!
For those with knee problems, or unsteady balance, I'd suggest to give this a pass. Carry water. And a blanket maybe. It's nice to sit and chat or meander a little to explore. As soon as the sun set, we were shooed off the hill complex by security guards. So be prepared to leave soon after and I'd suggest that to because you can climb off the tricky part of the hill while there is some natural light left.

With some of the best stone carvings, large monolithic idols and a Sunset point, this is a place one must see. Easy to reach and pretty close yo some other monuments this place is a good place to stop by for some serene peace
