Vijayanagar empire was founded in fourteenth century India and lasted over three hundred years(1336 to 1656). It was a formidable Hindu kingdom which ruled present day Andhra, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Orissa and parts of Kerala with capital at Hampi/Anegundi. The territory was larger than that controlled by Mugals even during their hey days. The populace here was very prosperous.... More

Vehicles need to be parked a km away from the temple. Electric Cart facility is available for the trip to the temple from there. You can also walk down the unpaved yet wide road (perhaps maintained that way to give that ancient feel) which is a brisk 10 minute walk. Beware of reptiles in case you are walking on the... More

The Vithala Temple Complex at Hampi houses probably the most famous monument in Hampi - the Garuda Shrine. The temple complex is magnificent and showcases the epitome of the architectural beauty. Note that this is one of the few ticketed monuments at Hampi.

This was my 5th or 6th time in Hampi. Each time the Vijaya Vittala temple seems a bit more ruined and that's so sad. I remember as a kid being astonished at the various musical instruments carved in stone yet making melodious sounds. Alas they are all broken now, our future generations are robbed of their history...

its a little distance away from the main central set of ruins but totally worth it. This entire space just feels like time has come to a standstill and that you are in a different era all together. Its really amazing what all was achieved all those centuries so ago!

The Vitthala Temple is one of the most important temples at Hampi and it shows a high level of finesse in the monuments such as the Devi shrine, Kalayana Mandapa, Utsava Mandapa, a 100 pillared Mandapa and the famed Garuda Shrine. It is part of the Unesco World Heritage list. A must visit temple in Hampi.

This is a good place to start with if you only have a day to explore Hampi, you can take a walk from here till the Virupaksha temple and cover many temples on the way till there. This would take a couple of hours.
