Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

At the center of Matsushima tourism is the plaza leading to the pier where Matsushima sightseeing boats depart and arrive. Next to the plaza, Godaido Hall stands on a rock that juts out into Matsushima Bay. You can see the whole structure from the side of the pier, but it doesn't get a clear view as trees grow and obscure the hall.
The Godaido Hall, which can be said to be the symbol of Matsushima, was founded when Sakanoue no Tamuramaro built Bishamon-do Hall during his eastern expedition. Later, Jikaku Daishi Ennin enshrined statues of the Five Great Wisdom Kings here, and the hall came to be called Godaido Hall.
The current building was rebuilt by Date Masamune in 1604, and there are carvings of two zodiac signs on the side of the hall.

It is an Important Cultural Property in the enclave of Zuiganji Temple. The current building was rebuilt by Masamune Date in 1604. It is the oldest surviving Momoyama architecture in the Tohoku region. It was fortunate that I was able to visit because it was worth seeing.

It is located near the center of Matsushima's tourist area, where many souvenir shops and restaurants are located. We crossed the open-top bridge and arrived at Godaido. It was impressive to see the many beams in the attic lined up vertically, giving the impression of spreading wings. The current building is said to have been built by Date Masamune in 1604. The view of the sea and islands from Godaido was also beautiful. I think it's a must-see place in Matsushima.

This temple is located at the end of a small peninsula jutting out into the sea. The temple rebuilt by Masamune is also a historic one, but the view of Matsushima from the temple grounds is quite nice, with nothing too distracting. It's in the main area of Matsushima and there's no admission fee, so you'll definitely stop by, but don't miss it.

A landmark of Matsushima, one of the Three Most Scenic Spots of Japan. It is located on an island in Matsushima Bay, but there is a bridge so you can easily get there. The small hall was built by Date Masamune. It is named after the Five Great Wisdom Kings that are enshrined there.

A religious site was founded here in 808 by General Sakanōe Tamuramuro as he pushed northwards to drive back the Emishi, an ethnic group which lived in Tōhoku in ancient times. Jikaku-Daishi, the Tendai monk, is said to have enshrined 5 Nyōrai in 828 at the temple, thus its name. The current hall was built in 1607 by Date Masamune. For over 400 years, the raised islands on which the temple sits have protected it from Tsunami. The statues of the 5 Nyōrai are presented to the public only every 33 years (the next showing is in 2039). Between the three islands which make up the temple grounds are wooden bridges. The tide does not always reach up past the closest island to the shore, and so the first, shorter bride goes over a shady patch of beach, which I found infinitely quaint. Views of the bay from the hall are lovely, although it was fairly misty when I visited.

Due to proximity to the pier and no charge for admission, this place is a must-visit spot for tour groups, which means that you need to find a place to stand amidst many other visitors.

Many tourists stop on the red bridge to take photos but if you walk further down, there is a way way longer red bridge leading to Fukuurajima (entrance fee of 200 yen).

I was only there for 5 minutes and then spent an hour or two at Fukkuurajima.

Walking along the planks of the bridge is a bit uncomfortable for most people. The small temple is very old and well proportioned. It cannot be entered.
