Shobak is the lesser visited, but very impressive, castle which rivals Kerak to the north. An impressive mountain drive to reach it, and its isolation from surrounding town development makes it a more striking example of the crusader castles. An absolute must, (along the way), is a stop at "Abu Ali". This character, a wonderful and gentle host, welcomes people... More

This place is lesser known and being visited by the tourists due to Kerak castle. Fortunately when we visited Jordan Kerak was clossed due to unfortunate terror attack so we visited this place nad we found it amaizing. Must visit this castel.

Shobak lies on the way to Petra and is a great rest stop as the views are exceptional from the top of the castle. It is not well preserved and there are no signposts or brochures there to assist visitors.

Really historic castle showcasing several ruling groups. Our guide Abu Layth was very knowledgeable and friendly and greatly enhanced our visit. Well worth the trip!

On a weeklong trip to Jordan, we stopped here after the closure of Karak to tourists. Given the last minute change to plans, we weren't really up to date on the history of the castle. It was mostly ruins, and hasn't really been developed to put it into context.

Make sure to bring headlights or flashlights, so you can experience the awesome hidden staircase. Either let your driver drop you off at the escape hatch or end your visit by climbing down. The castle itself is worth exploring, including the small exhibition of stone carvings.

If you're heading this way do call in as it's great to explore, and quite quiet relatively speaking; still having some romance, you can get a feel of the place. Geologists will love the features.

I'm not sure how achievable it would be without a guide or a car but if you are in the neighborhood it is definitely worth stopping in for a snapshot of the crusades.
