Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My favourite hike in Petra. Simply fantastic, amazing. It is quite hard and it is almost all under the sun. It is not busy, so less shops, less tourist and the chance to admire the landscape without all the mass of people. It starts close to the restaurants and it finished close to the amphitheatre. I think this loop is easier than the opposite direction.

It has spectacular views!!! You can see the entire route from the moment you leave the Siq to the temple, castle, etc.
They told us about a stone that was the highest part of the monastery, which due to its location is impossible to see, but the highest part apparently can be seen…

The High Place of Sacrifice is a high plateau that was used for important religious ceremonies by the Nabateans. It can be accessed by steps cut into the rock. The view over the Petra site is quite stunning, it's well worth the effort.

A good escape from the busy roads and monuments. Less people take the steps up the place of sacrifice. Not bad for fit people but sure not all people can handle this. The view from top is spectacular. Nice fresh air but maybe will be much less fun if the weather was hot.

If you have a 2nd day in Petra, do this trail. The high place of sacrifice is interesting & has a good view down onto Petra's tombs. The climb is by easy steps & much less crowded than the Monastery. The easy descent via Wadi al Farasa takes you past more tombs. I would recommend this trail rather than the Al Khubtha if you don't have time for all.

Hard to reach this point, there are hundreds of stairs to climb, but it is worth the effort. It seems to be the highest point in the entire site, and the view from here is exceptional.

This was definitely our favourite Trek in Petra.
After climbing to the High Altar head back to the little shop and instead of going back down to the main route continue on past the shop.
This route is so amazing and we only met one other tourist.
There are no vendors but there are amazing tombs and water gardens along the way.
Well worth the effort.

The walk is easy with lots of steps and it’s not in a direct sunlight so yes, I’d say it’s easy. Once you get to the very top keep going ahead to get to the end of that rock and see Petra from above.

I remember reading reviews here and talking to others who have done this trek before I did it and it gets mixed reviews. Some loved it but some said it's a tough walk and the views aren't great.
I wholly disagree. This is completely worth it.
I arrived into the Petra complex at 6am so started on this walk at 6:45am. I would highly recommend doing it like that if possible. I think this doing walk at noon would be a very different beast. As well as better weather I had this trail to myself. I met 1 other hiker and only 1 or 2 people selling. Basically all the stalls were shut and nobody was there to bother me. The actual high place of sacrifice is decent, but really this walk is all about the views you get from the top. You can see most of the whole complex including Roman theater, temple and street. It's beautiful.
Once you get the place of high sacrifice do the backside trail down. There are some cool temples, burial chambers on the way and again you have it to yourself.
Do yourself a favour and go for it.

This was the last place i visited while there and was a bit tired after walking around for the previous 6 hours. This is another hike to the top of the canyon, it took a bit less than an hour but the top was almost empty. Only two or three other people up there. Found a rock to sit on and just stared out at the view it was peaceful and just what i needed. The high place of sacrifice wasn't much there are only a few little rock corners of where the platforms used to be. Also the 2 Obelisks were interesting, someone said they were carved out of the mountain, not put into place.
The view from up there is again amazing, everywhere you look at petra is another amazing view.
Worth the hike even at the end of a long day!!!

We r going with a tour in the fall to Petra. We have been there before I was wondering if a visit to the High Place of Sacrifice or Wadi Rum would be good alternatives?

The High Place of Sacrifice is in Petra. If you have not done that then do the whole hike starting at the Basin Restaurant then descending into the amphitheater near the Treasury. There is hardly anyone on the route and you will have amazing tombs to yourself. The view from the top is amazing as is the alter carved unit rock. To get there you have to scramble up a sloping rock at the very top. A number of people don't do this and miss the sacrificial alter and the amazing views.
