We had an amazing private 7 day 6 nitghts tour in the Manu National Reserve with Local Trekkers Peru. Everything was very well arranged for us, we were 6 people in total all family and we only have good rate for this company.
Our guide Ronald was eager to please and had a genuine passion for showing the animals in their element. It is easy to spot garden variety of animals like Capibaras, wild boars, aligators, caimans, giant river otters, some snakes, tapir and a wild variety of other animals and birdlife, We managed to also see many Macaws, parrots, egrets vultures and so on. Also he is very friendly, Deep knowledge of wildlife he knows every ecosistem in the jungle and its ecology as well, he could explain everything about each animal that we saw.
About our cook Josep was Superbe he always prepared delicious meals. Thanks to him we had a lot of food on the table to Choose, the cake he made was super, it’s Amazing how he prepare much menus and dishes with so less untensils. Amazing!!!
Also, i wanto thanks to the boat driver and his assistant (Rogelio and Augusto) who were a great help to move all our stuff and they also were very attentive to show us when some animal appeared in anywhere along the river.
Finally i would like to recommend this company as your jungle trip operador they are 100 % local people and they provide job to local people as well, YOU WON’T REGRET.!!!

Our family of 6 had the most extraordinary adventure exploring Manu Reserved Zone with Local Trekkers Peru. It was a journey that created cherished memories and strengthened our bond like never before. The Person who organized everything for us, was Alberto the manager, who we contacted from home with a simple message and he responded very kindly and precisely and from that moment I knew that we were in good hands.
Already on the tour our guide Nefi was not only knowledgeable but also fantastic with children, sparking their curiosity and leaving them in awe of the natural wonders around them. He ver knowledgeable of the Amazonian ecosystems from the high jungle to the low jungle, it is in this last one where we spend more time and where we observe more animals. Thank you Nefi for sharing your knowledge with us.
As we ventured into the heart of the rainforest, The professionalism of the Local Trekkers team was very evident, Timoteo our Cook, always had the food ready and on time, and of course it was delicious, varied, with fresh products and plenty for everyone at the table. Not to mention that each plate was very well decorated with shapes of animals that we saw in the jungle, meal time was very well awaited by the kids, since they wanted to see what new food did Timoteo to surprise us.
The wildlife encounters were the highlight of the trip for all of us. Spotting colorful parrots and toucans soaring above us, monkeys playfully swinging through the canopy, and the rare glimpse of a magnificent jaguar made our hearts race with wonder and amazement. In addition to them we saw a family of 8 Kapibaras, we saw alligators and the main attraction in the lake within the reserved zone were the giant river otters, and of course we saw many more animals that I don't remember all their names.
Local Trekkers Peru deserves recommendation for their meticulous planning and attention to detail. The itinerary was family friendly, ensuring a perfect balance between adventure and relaxation. Safety was a top priority, and our guide expertise gave us peace of mind throughout the journey. You won’t regret with this company.

Apr 2014 • Friends
I spent 6 days and 5 nights in the Manu National Park at the begining of April 2014. I went there with my boyfriend, as well as my parents and 2 friends of them. We had an amazing but exhausting time. The Manu National Park is huge and the lodges are usually 2 days journey away from Cusco. We spent the first day mainly in the 4X4 driving from Cusco to the first lodge of our tour operator (not to recommend, but I'll get to that later...) and the second day on the boat (8-9 hours) to get to the second lodge, which was in the middle of the National Park part open for tourists (only a very small part of the park is actually open for tourism, but it is still big enough!). The way back to Cusco was the same: one day on the boat and then one day in the 4X4. These four days were quite exhausting. They were, however, still worth it, since we also saw many interesting things (Cock of the Rock bird and many other birds, Spider Monkey, buterflies, caimans). During the 3N and 2D in the middle of the park, we went for walks in the forest and saw many monkeys, and other incredible fauna and flora, as well as on boat trips, during which we were lucky enough to see caimans as well as a jaguar!
This beautiful trip in the Manu National Park was unfortunately a bit messed up by the tour operator we chose... The tour operator is called Manu Nature Tours. This kind of tour is rather expensive and you therefore have certain expectation (specially when you are travelling with 4 people over 60 years old). The two lodges owned by Manu Nature Tours were is very bad conditions: not only in terms of cleanliness but also in terms of facilities maintenance (the toilets and showers were not working half of the time) and of security (balconies' barriers not very stable...). I just want to emphasize that we chose an "expensive" tour in order to have a certain comfort during these 6 days (my boyfriend and I had been backpacking around Argentina, Chile and Bolivia during 5 months prior to this trip but we could not ask my parents and their friends to travel as we had been doing, with limited comfort), and that we therefore had certain expectation regarding the facilities offered by the tour operator.
What annoyed us also a lot was that Manu Nature Tours sold to us, on top of the already expensive 6D/5N package, a couple of "extra" activities (mountain bike and night walk in the jungle), before we left for the tour. We also had to pay for these activities in advance. Regarding the mountain bike, we learnt one day before leaving that part of the road was in works and that we would not be able to ride down the road during day light. Moreover, the bikes were in rather bad condition... Regarding the night walk, we had paid for it for my dad, my boyfriend and myself. However, we realized, once we were in the jungle, that we were really tired and not really comfortable going out at night... Out of the three, only my boyfriend did this night walk with our guide, which lasted not even an hour. We were a bit surprised that we had to pay extra for this activity since the guide was with us all the time anyway... When we were back in Cusco, we asked whether we could get the money of the night walk back (for my dad and myself), since we had not done the activity. And we suggested that they should not sell this activity in advance but rather offer it once in the jungle, if the clients wanted to do it, and charge for it after. The tour operator was not at all receptive to our suggestion and obviously did not give us any money back.
After this great experience in the park, I decided to write to the owner of the tour operator to share with him our disappointment and concerns about the state of his lodges. I received a reply not from the owner but from the sales person, who answered to my email with bad faith and finding excuses to all my comments. He even said they had never had complains, which was not true since I found later on trip advisor several negative comments on Manu Nature Tours.
To conclude, I just want to say that this trip was amazing! The guides we had were really good and attentive (unfortunately not well paid by their boss). I would just recommend that you research well before choosing you tour operator and ask for quotes just to compare the prices (the tour we did costed us around 2000 USD per person). But I would not recommend the tour operator Manu Nature Tours.
However, don't forget that a trip to the Manu National Park is always an adventure and that you can't expect high luxury. Nevertheless, I would have expected the basic things such as sanitary facilities, to be in working order.
Good luck with the research of tour operator and enjoy the trip!!

The people working at Manu Adventures lied to us and others who signed up for the same tour about what we would see and experience. We originally signed up for the 8 day tour to the reserve zone, but when we checked in, we were told that not enough people had signed up and they were switching us to the 5 day tour. I said I didn't want that tour because it only went to the cultural zone, but the staff person (her name was Saira) assured us that we would see monkeys, caimans, and everything else that you see in the 8 day tour.
So many lies! The weather didn't allow us to do rafting, but the rafting wasn't even through the rainforest like she said - it was through towns on the way to the rainforest. We never actually entered Manu Park on the whole trip! We were at a lodge just at the edge of it. It became very clear that we wouldn't see caimans at all. The macaw clay lick was so far away, you had to use a telescope and even then, the birds looked very far away. We got lucky and saw three types of monkeys, but they were also very far away. The best part was seeing insects on the night hike.
Our guide was very nice and very knowledgeable - his name was Arturo, but I felt bad for him because the tourists were upset that we wouldn't be able to experience what was promised to us. Another couple on the tour had signed up for a 4 day tour and weren't told until they were picked up from their hotel that they were moved onto the 5 day tour.
After the tour, we went to the office to complain. Saira refused to refund the money we had paid for the rafting trip we didn't get to go on. She completely denied that she had told us we would see the same animals on the 5 day tour as the 8 day tour and scoffed at us for thinking so. She yelled at me and I started to cry and she didn't care.
Make sure if you go to Manu Park, that you go to the reserve zone and to go with any tour company besides Manu Adventures.

We had a fantastic time here in June but before going to Manu NP protected zone consider the travelling involved to get there. From Cusco to the river boat connection is a full days travel by road each way. From the town where you get on your boat to Boca Manu at the end of Madre de Dios is between 8 - 9 hours. From Boca Manu to Blanquillo Lodge it's about 2 - 3 hours and going the other way from Boca Mano to the Salvador Oxbow lake is about 6 - 7 hours. Travel times vary according to river conditions, whether you going up or downstream and stops along the way. So if you want to go into Manu NP "proper" realistically you need at least 8 days or more. If you have less time be realistic about the parts you can visit without being on the road or river all the time.
The two tour operators that appealed most to us was Patiacolla Tours and Wild Watch Peru.
We went with WWP because their timetable suited us better and they were more flexible with what we wanted to get out of the trip. In the end we were very happy with our choice.
A couple of tips: Take good binoculars, don't skimp! You will be very dependent on these for seeing things at a fair distance, which is most of the time.
Be quiet and keep talking to a minimum when walking trails and wildlife watching, forest creatures are very sensitive to sound and they will avoid you if they hear you coming.
Have a list of at least 200 things you want to see and you won't be disappointed. If you are going there only to try spot a Jaguar you will be disappointed and be better off going to a zoo.
Don't expect luxury lodges, fabulous meals and an easy stroll through the jungle, if that's what you want this is not the place for you. This is nature to be enjoyed only by people who really love it.

Booked this tour with greenlands robels and were assured we would be doing lots of activities such as fishing, looking for caiman, raft building among other things however none of it materialised. They didnt even bring fishing hooks saying it was optional,it wasnt an option for us as they didnt have the necessary equipment. Very dissorganised throughout. Said there would be toilets and said there were large buildings that in reality hadnt been built yet! Lied about the area of the park we were actually going to and many more things were not as they said. Very dissapointing trip to what should have been an amazing adventure. When we went to the tour office after to say we werent happy with the tour we got as that was not the one they sold us they were incredible rude and unprofessional. Do not trust these guys. They dont even stick to their own printed itinery they give you let alone the extra stuff they tell you in person. Greeblands roble are a terrible company.

A short intro: Manu is divided in 3 zones; the cultural zone, which is easiest to reach and has some simple communities. Most trips here are 4 days. Then there is the reserved zone, which is further into the jungle. Only a couple of tour companies have a license to operate tours there. Typical tours last 7 or 8 days. The last zone is the 'forbidden zone', only accessible to scientist. There are still a number of tribes living there, isolated from the rest of the world. Be aware that it takes quite a while to get there: one day to drive to the cultural zone, and an additional day in a boat to reach the reserved zone.
We went on an 8 day trip, which was deep into the jungle, and really pushed me out of my comfort zone. But hey, that is where the magic happens, isn't it? By the time I got used to the insects and spiders, the heat and the mud, it was quite an experience to be in such a unique ecosystem. I would not have wanted to miss it.
My partner is an avid bird watcher and he loved every minute. I would have liked to see more mammals, but the jungle really isn't made for that. For me, 7 days would have been enough as well. (that is 2 nights in the reserved zone).
Mosquitos really are the biggest down side. So, a word to the wise, as it can not be stated enough: Bring plenty of bug repellent. Wear long sleeves and socks at all times. Tuck your mosquito net under your mattress. Bring after bite. Take showers when you can. Wash your clothes (and dry them on the boat).
Accommodation in the reserved zone is basic, but that is the same for all tour operators, no matter how much they charge. These are camp sites, not lodges. The only camp site we saw that seemed a negative exception was the Manu Adventures site, it was not maintained very well.
Timing wise: we went in the rainy season, that's probably not the bes time to go. We were lucky with the weather, but it could have easily spoilt the experience if it would have rained more.

Manu lodge is managed by Manu Nature Tours in Cuzco: they have it in concession by the Government. I spent a few days (29Aug-03Sep 2012) in a tour organised by Manu Nature Tours and spent 2 nights at the Manu Lodge (other than the cloud forest lodge). The real status of the whole infrastructure of the Manu Lodge is poor; nothing to do with the brochure/internet pictures of their website. This lodge is the only permanent structure within Manu and perhaps at one point in time, it was terrific, but because of their neglect, today the accommodations are in worse conditions than those of their competitors. The canopy climbing is not working anymore, and the conservation state of the trails is very scarce. Also the operations/services were very disappointing: food nothing special, cleanliness poor, general organisation very poor. Be careful and aware of what you buy, because The Manu Nature Tours tour operator is the only one that have the concession to handle the Manu lodge and they apply the highest price. I'm very sorry because the place itself is great and deserves better management and care. Together with other tourists, I complained and asked for reimbursement which was never considered by the Manu Nature Tours. I've also recently complained through the official Peruvian tourism website. Do not hesitate to ask me for further details.

This National Park exhausted my nerves and my imagination deeply - in a good sense. We did some river rafting, including swimming in the river, which was awesome.
Then from the lodges we walked a lot in all directions, our guide was Biologist and so he knew about pretty much everything we asked about in terms of trees, flora and fauna, and he also knew where to go to see animals, insects or for example special trees. We made a little trip to a place where parrots fly to eat in the early mornings and saw hundreds of colorful parrots and other birds. We saw Tucans, monkeys, parrots, boars and lots more birds and insects.
The lodge was situated right next to the river and it was all natural jungle environment. In the night we had a sky filled with stars (as there was no city/lights around). We also didn't have any internet, mobile or radio/tv reception, which was ideal to relax and to get away from this steady stress of checking everything you got or could have got. I enjoyed myseld very much in Manu National Park and the 5 days were very well filled with a good mix of activities and relaxing.

My friend and I did a 3-day tour of the Amazon cloud forest with Vilca Expeditions and it was incredible! Definitely a once in a lifetime experience. Our tour guide, Darwin, was so much fun and extremely knowledgeable. We had our own cook, named Betty, and the food was so delicious! I didn't understand how she was able to make such amazing food in the middle of the jungle but it was practically gourmet.
Highlights of the tour included cliff jumping in the Madre de Dios river, lots of hiking, boating, dancing around a bonfire, playing with sloths and monkeys at a wildlife sanctuary, and so many laughs with Darwin and Betty! I absolutely recommend this tour - you won't regret it!
Also, the online price says $390 USD, but I haggled via email and got it down to $250 USD. Worth every penny (would've been worth the full price as well)!

Are there any animals in cages or animals that perform included in this trip? I would love to see the national park but not if animals is being held captive for tourist amusement.
