About
Handmade mezcal distillery, belongs to a family originally from Santiago Matatlán. We make distillate from different varieties of maguey. elaboration in copper stills as well as holders of the culture in distilled beverages in clay pots. We are interested in letting many of the community know how this noble traditional drink is produced by taking tours or talks to introduce them to this world of organic mezcals. Our mezcal brand is a limited production that is only sold in our factory.

It was part of a tour bought in Oaxaca Ciudad. The provider is “Servicio Turístico Tilcajete”, part of “Xiadani Tours Oaxaca”. The Mezcaleria was in total like 30-40min, all together. Not even showing the different ages of the Maguey (which was in the backyard), the guy was rushing from the very first moment, explaining with no interest and really just getting through as fast as possible. Never and nothing again with that agency!!

The lady doing the tour seemed to be in a rush and was very distracted. She kept on looking around and was not very interested in interacting with our group. The Mezcal was so, so, compared to others we had tried in Oaxaca. We went to this place with our tour but I’m sure there are other Mezcalerias that provide a better experience. Don’t try the creams and flavored mezcales. Not worth it.

Lamentamos su experiencia, el tour que tomo fue completamente gratis, hacemos tour con costo económico al cual tiene una experiencia de 2-3 horas y es privado, no compartido cuando hacemos los tours gratis.
Saludos.

I love tequila and thought I didn't care for mezcal until I came here. Personally, I do not like white mezcal, but when I tried the añejo/aged mezcal, I thought it was delicious! Of course, a true mezcal drinker and local would say that the worm and the añejo is for the gringos/foreigners...! The mezcal from El Rey de Matatlan is not exported because the process of making the mezcal is authentic and their capacity is limited. The process is not chemically/mechanically hastened. The "pineapples" of the succulent used for mezcal are buried under layers of banana leaves and leftover from the leaves, and are left to ferment. The whole process is explained on a short tour before you are invited to try everything they offer (which is ALOT). Definitely worth a visit!

The guy who gave the tour is a thief. He quoted my brother a price for two bottles of mezcal. When it was time to pay, he charged $200 (pesos) more than what he had originally quoted. He did the same to me. Not sure if this practice is representative of the whole company, or if it was just this guy. Don't trust this place.

Nice selection, reasonable prices. Two ways to do this: get the touristy bottles and bring home a souvenir.. or, do as we locals do, and stick with the unmarked bottles (or bring your own bottles). Same mezcal, better prices. Of course there are fancy types that they prefer you. Uy. You choose.

Allow up to an hour for the free tour and tasting. Our guide, Freddy, spoke very good English and was very knowledgeable and passionate about the mezcal factory and processing. It was very interesting to see the whole process in action from the plant in the ground to becoming the drink. We were provided with the full range of mezcals to try and the varieties kept coming as they found other flavours we might like. With nothing to compare it to the prices did seem quite good. Easy to find, just off the road from Oaxaca to Mitla.

We had a 3-5 minute talk on how to make Mezcal before the lady started pouring samples for us to taste! Whilst the samples were excellent it would have been great to know a bit more about the process.
You could try any mezcal you wanted, they were very generous and the prices of the bottles were reasonable. However if you want more of an educational trip this is not the place to go.

A bit pricy, it is nice though to see a garden with different sorts of agave plants, the destilation process and taste many of them.

We were divided into 2 groups, English and Spanish..I went with the Spanish group as always! We were given a lesson in how mezcal is made. It is different than tequila in that it has a kind of smoky taste because of the way the liquor is made. We were shown the different plants that are used to make tequila and mezcal. The mezcal plant is bigger! After the short tour, we sat on the bar and were given samples different types of mezcal. There are also differnt kinds of fruit mezcals that come in different colors. I bought a small bottle of the lemon flavor to give to my paisanos in Juarez because I do not want to pay the duty tax if I cross it over to EL Paso! ha ha

We stopped at this place on our way back to Oaxaca from Hierve el Agua. I'm glad we did as we tried the different Mezcal versions which are based from different Agave plants. Even though I'm more a Tequila guy, this tour was fantastic. The host was very friendly and knowledgeable as she walked us through the processed and answered all our questions. The tasting part is the best! We ended up buying high-quality low-cost Mezcal and Cream bottles. Salud!!!
