We opted to do this tour to Saona island whilst in Punta Cana after hearing great things about the island and wanting to get away from the resort for a day. After discussing the plans with our rep we were given our pickup time and informed to be ready and waiting 10 minutes earlier. We packed a few essentials GoPro, sunblock, towels, hats etc and were ready to be go.
The morning of the trip we made sure we were down and ready to go 10 mins ahead of the allotted pick up time...10 minutes passed and no-one appeared. In the end it turned out we were the last pickup and they were around 15-20 minutes late but none the less we were straight on our way from our hotel.
After about 20 minutes our small minibus stopped at a gift store where we were advised we could use the toilet, get a free coffee and shop whilst we awaited the rest of our group and a bigger tour bus. We were advised it would be 10 minutes and then we would be ready to go...needless to say we worked out this morning that they were working on Caribbean time not Uk time as it was around 30 minutes later that the coach arrived and the we boarded and tried to find some seats.
Once we embarked on the main coach our guide started talking and giving us some of the local history and information about what was going to be seen and visited during the day. I would recommend trying to get to the front of the coach if possible as we were sat nearer the back and could only hear it very faintly.
Once we arrived at Bayahibe we departed the coach and walked over to the beach where in we boarded the boat that took us over to the catamaran. There are many different tours and groups collating in quite a small space here so be sure to keep an eye on your guide and not loose your group!
After a couple of minutes we boarded the boat and was taken over to the catamaran where we could jump aboard, get comfortable and ready for the journey ahead.
Once the catamaran started moving our tour guide did a basic introduction for the crew and then the music started. This tour was very much a party boat, there was plenty of music, dancing and rum.
The journey on the catamaran took around 90 minutes which in the sun drinking plenty of rum can easily fly by, there is some shade on the boat but be sure to pack suncream and keep topping it up as the sun is direct and HOT!
We arrived at the island at around 11:30 and was fortunately the first group there so it was pristine and quiet when we arrived. We were informed where the toilets, lunch and bar was and then we were off on our own free time to relax.
The lunch was served at 13:00 and was a varied selection of pasta, salad and BBQ of which was all tasty. Rum and drinks were served at the bar all day inclusive of the tour costs.
At lunch we were advised to meet at our meeting point at 14:30 ready to board the speedboat and head back to Punta Cana. 14:30 came around and we were stood at the waiting point as instructed....but our guide was asleep on a sun lounger under a tree....turns out there was a revision to the meet time and only a handful of the group was fully informed at lunch. This was frustrating as we were in the vicinity but it hadn't been clearly communicated and led to a lot of people being confused.
Once the revised time came around our guide strolled over and we boarded the boat ready to depart. The music started and we were gliding across the water at speed on our way back to Punta Cana. Around 20 minutes into the journey however the boat started to slow down.....then came to a stop.
The driver and one of the crew climed into the back with the engine and started poking at it with a knife....this was just a tad concerning as we were floating in the Atlantic. After around 10 minutes the engine started and we continued on our journey for another 15-20 minutes.
We then stopped and was in the Blue Lagoon, around 600m from shore we were in a natural swimming pool with waist deep water where you could walk around, snorkel, see starfish....and be served rum and coke in the ocean by the crew! A rather surreal experience in itself.
After a little while of swimming around and enjoying the sun we boarded the boat (thankfully it started again) and we headed off to Bayahibe where we boarded the coach for our journey back.
All in all it was a great trip, the food and drink was served all day and was of great quality. My only reasons for 4* not 5 was due to the whole Caribbean timing and miscommunication over this...and the worry about the boat actually getting back!
I would not advise this excursion for families with children ages less than 12 or so years old. There is a lot of load music on the catamaran, alcohol and no life vests so having a small child with you could prove challenging.

We were a little hesitant to book this trip as price was very cheap and only a few reviews. We were not disappointed..... Staff, transport, food, drinks and activities were amazing! Beautiful destination and great fun had by all. Highly recommend this trip to anyone looking to visit Saona Island and pay a lot less than the larger tour operators charge. All tours end up on the same boats and location on Saona Island.

Hi
We are very sorry to hear this, but myself was present at the excursion with you, and we took the precaution because you were traveling with a 3 years old kid in a buggie, we didn’t wanted you to have an accident with your kids, besides you didn’t wanted to follow the rules, we don’t want any customer to feel bad but safety is first for us and our customers

We booked the trip, confirmed the pick and they never picked us up from our hotel. I feel like they basically stole my money and trip advisor condoned it. Be smart book directly with your resort.

This excursion started off with the company trying to get $60 extra for a private experience from us and the other two couples who were with us. We already knew that there were only 8 total people signed up for the tour and the couple that was not with our group unfortunately bought into the scam, so why would we pay extra? The young guide pulled us outside to escape the view of the cameras and tried to tell us that there were others joining....we refused to pay and so he made us wait 15 minutes (out of our excursion time) before they finally said, ok, let's go...of course there were no others joining.
Also, the excursion start location is full of locals hanging around including animals with soars and missing hair...don't touch or pet them.
If I was rating the company only by merit, they would be a double negative, however, what made the excursion fun for the group were the stops along the country side. Be careful though, the vendors are very aggressive. Please take a few pesos or dollars with you...not for the excursion company or the vendors that are overpriced...you can probably get the same items cheaper at your resort from the people walking along the beachside...but (if you care to), take some for the poor children who pick weed flowers and try to sell them in desperation along the roadside. One kid just asked for some bottled water.
The 25 foot deep warm water hole was amazing...again, the vendors attack as soon as you get there to try to pull you into their shops, so stay firm. The beach at the end of the tour was less than stellar. It smelled of dead oysters and sea weed which you walked through mounds of just to get to the water... We didn't get in at all...The beach at the resorts are 1000% better.
Be careful of this one. They did not even confirm our time...we had to call them and the guy we spoke with had an attitude....guess we called him to early. Not one I would recommend.

Actual tour was fun. Very little information about the places we stopped on. Tour was confirmed for 9am with 8am pick up at our hotel. We were at the meeting area at 730 and no one showed up. Had the hotel call the transportation company and they told us that they would pick us up at 11 and again they never showed up. When we called they called us liars and that we where not at the pickup point. Again they told us 3pm and finally we got to go. If you book this DON'T use Punta Cana cheap transportation! They are brutal. We wasted 1/2 a day of our vacation waiting for them.

So here's the deal. The actual excursion from when we arrived at the marina to get on the speedboat and head to the island was absolutely fantastic. Our whole issue with the excursion was that we were the very first group picked up from our resort. We were a solid 2.5 hours getting to the marina. The bus was fine, clean, and they stopped mid-way to allow us to use the bathroom at a gas station which was surprising clean as well. We just had no idea the trip to and from the marina would take so long. So the lesson learned here is that whoever you use to get to Isla Saona make sure you completely understand the time commitment going back and forth. The trip out to the sandbar was fine and the bartender kept the drinks flowing. The island is stunning! Straight out of a postcard. We did the VIP package that included grilled lobster and upgraded alcohol-like vodka and whiskey. The catamaran ride back to the marina was a lot of fun with a lot of dancing, drinking, and music. Then we had another 2.5 hour drive back to our resort. It was a great day, but a very long day.

This trip was amazing… our guide Christian was fun, very knowledgeable, and gave us a lot of history about the island on the way to the boat… The speed boat ride over to the natural swimming hole was awesome…and the swimming hole was incredible! The island, the lunch, the beach, and the catamaran ride back were all fantastic… This excursion is a must if you visit Punta Cana and this is the best deal that you will find. We couldn’t have asked for a better day!
