Went Twice .....
Mar. 2020
I am a Museum junkie, and the Bagan Archaeological Museum did not disappoint. As a matter of fact, I went here twice during my three days exploring Bagan. This museum is mainly dedicated to cultural artifacts which center on the thousands of temples and pagodas built in the 9th-13th centuries. The numerous depictions of Buddha were breathtaking. This museum is a must see.

Museum is always right place to go!
Feb. 2020 • Friends
The building is pretty, i think they intend to resemble the old monastery of Bagan with this building.
They show us good amount of artefacts. I wish they gave us more detailed information in English about everything in that museum like why the Buddha has different hand gesture and how they put them in every temple.
Anyway, I spent more than two hours in this place and I came out with a big grin on my face because I was happy to go there.

All the mediocre reviews because that's what this museum is
Jan. 2020
I like museums a lot and top museums in such places especially, and I don't mind old-fashioned, even colonial ones and respective displays, but this is really just a loveless, dusty assemblage of mediocre items (all the good ones are in Yangon) and some very mediocre dioramas. Unless you have a guide from the museum itself who can explain the Buddha statues collection, which is by far the highlight, I'd say don't go at all. It's nowhere near Yangon, and it has outright nothing to do with Bangkok (after which the Great Hall is modeled) or Phnom Penh, but also not with Siem Reap or Ayutthaya or Saigon. Even Mandalay is marginally better. Just skip it and see another pagoda instead.

Why all the mediocre reviews?
Nov. 2019
The archeological museum is a pleasant change of pace from temple-hopping and a pleasantly cool respite from the heat. But more than that, it's a place to make sense of the enormity of Bagan, get your bearings, and get an overview of what this amazing place is all about. There is just enough information presented to make sense of the temples you're exploring and provide context, without being overwhelming.

I like the focus on daily life -mockups of how villages would have looked, a collection of hairstyles from the Bagan era, paintings of how people would have built the temples, etc. The people in the paintings look impossibly clean and content -definitely a sanitized version of daily life, but still.

And contrary to what Rough Guide says, I think the building is very attractive, evocative of the architectural styles of the rest of Bagan. As others have noted, for some inexplicable reason they don't allow photos with cameras, but do allow photos on mobile phones. But I was clicking away with my camera for a long time before anyone noticed.

A Must See
Dec. 2019
Not everything has been stolen or sold --- and this museum helps prove the point. Many fantastic pieces, simply displayed in large exhibition halls on 3 levels. I've been there twice, always really great stuff to see. I don't usually review "places", but this is a great stop (especially in the heat of the day).

Really nice
Nov. 2019 • Couples
For our first day in Bagan (where we already paid 25000ks to enter the region) we tried this museum. I think it is quite interesting to go and see it because it shows many temples and a lot more of Bagan royal history. The painting are not from back then, but at least they tried to make us imagine how was the life at that time. Also great discoveries like, the stone written in four Myanmar languages, the precious lotus, the different hairstyle painted in the pagodas... :) it was nice!

A fascinating museum with lots of interesting facts on Bagan culture and history. Its very well maintained ( compared to other museums in Myanmar ). We enjoyed our tour there, in the afternoon esp away from Bagan heat.

An amazingly wonderful collection of cultural artefacts and sculptures. A visit requires spending long time there.
Sep. 2019
Bagan Archaeological Museum is housed in a sprawling complex. This museum features many fine pieces from Bagan including reclining buddhas, original images, inscribed stones and mural re-creations. The museum has models of major temples with architectural details, and a model of an 11th-century village.
A visit to the museum gives a total view of the Bagan cultural heritage and requires spending a bit of time to appreciate its rich collection. We had about two hours in the museum and wished we had much more time to really understand and appreciate its richness and variety.

Learn the stories behind the carvings and art
Jun. 2019 • Friends
It was very interesting to learn about the history and culture of the area. There writing old writing stones, old tools, paintings of what the temples used to look like, and explanations of the stories behind the art and carvings we'd been seeing. It's hot inside. They say no photography, but everyone had their phones out and no one said anything. You have to leave your back pack/large bags in lockers outside but you keep the key.
