A small boutique hotel ran by a husband and wife team, who take great care to give you the best service they can. They engage with you whenever they are around. The rooms are traditional style with lots of nice extra touches. The staff offer to spray your room every night against mosquitoes and couldn't be more helpful.
We only ate in the hotel as there was nowhere else suitable locally for tourists as the hygeine standards are very low outside the hotel.
The hotel was beautifully clean, there were handwashing facilities in the restaurant and in the garden should you chose to eat outside. The view over the Irrawaddy river was wonderful and particularly the sunset.
The owners are currently doing up a boat so they can offer dining on the boat and expand their business and I am sure this will be worthwhile for them.
We had the best room in the hotel, nearest the river upstairs at the end of the balcony. No complaints there.
The food was exceptional, service wonderful, the staff even got up early (at 5.00am) on our departure day to ensure we had breakfast.
Highly recommend for food, or for accommodation. We would consider returning because it was so good, but would say the only thing missing for us was a swimming pool (however small).

We went in visit from Bagan to Salay. A long trip for few things to see.... the entry fees to the temples are high and they close early (the day we went anyway). But for lunch our guide, mr Kalila (excellent guide!) brought us to Salay House. A hotel, restaurant and shop in one of the quite back streets of town. The house is very beautifully renovated. The shop has nice things. They even have a small museum above the shop. The garden of the Salay House is really nice, very green with flowers, quite and it overlooks the river. The food and service was excellent. Only the owner, a young very friendly lady, speaks english. A place to recommend! It was worth the 4 hour trip (back and forth) from Bagan.

Salay House is exactly what was missing in Salay, one of the nicest off the road one day trip from Bagan. It has amazing old wooden monasteries and temples. It is an old trader outpost by the river and Salay House, an historical merchant old house has been put back in action by Khine and Steve, both expert about the village and the region.
Great Food, great service, great view by the river and 14 rooms to spend the night if necessary. Well done !

We were taken here for lunch but our lovely guide Win Bo from Tour Manadalay. Absolutely lovely, set on the river, a beautiful way to pass the time and have a lovely lunch, the food was very good, and the service, very friendly and efficient. We were introduced to the owners, again very welcoming, they now have rooms to stay, which were very impressive, you couldn't pick a perfect place to chill out for a few days. We wish them all the best for the future, and so pleased we got the chance to visit there.

We stopped at Salay House for a brief tour of the heritage house which has been very well restored and now houses a lovely gift shop with traditional living quarters upstairs. Outside there is a fabulous garden which looks over some fields filled with blooming sunflowers and a view down to the Irrawaddy River. We choose to have a fresh papaya and lime juice which was both refreshing and tasty. We only had about 30 minutes here but could easily have stayed for longer and relax with a bite to eat and enjoy the peace and quite of the gardens. Well worth a visit.

I was travelling on the river on a cruise boat and we called at the village and ended with a refreshment break here. It was a real treat. The owners want to present it as a heritage house. Downstairs where the merchant once traded is now a delightful gift shop with lots of traditional Burmese crafts. Upstairs is set up as living quarters. Go further through to the garden and you find a lovely peaceful oasis with a winding path and tables and chairs scattered through shrubs and lands. Tasty refreshments and a lovely view at the end planted with sunflowers overlooking the Irrawaddy. The owners speak English and we're very friendly and welcoming. Just gorgeous.

We found this lovely little restaurant/shop/bar on a stroll around Salay on an excursion from our boat on the Irrawaddy river. Although our dinner was included on our boat we were so impressed after stopping here for a cocktail that we decided to go back for dinner. The charming couple who own and run the place and their staff could not have made us feel more welcome. We had a table by the water's edge which was flanked with sunflowers and sat and watched the sun set over the river. Delicious Burmese dishes were continually produced and all of exceptional quality. The toilets were immaculately clean and was the kitchen where you could see the chef preparing the food. And to top it all a delicious espresso coffee - a very hard thing to come by in Myanmar!
On our way out Kai, the owner gave my daughter a beautiful little jade elephant for luck.
If you are in Salay, don't miss it!
