Not too difficult a hike as dirt roads are pretty much tame enough for miners to walk up and down on a daily basis. Definitely chilly in the early morning so it would be great to bring additional layers to keep warm. Sulfur fumes may be overpowering depending on the direction of the wind. Very rewarding hike

We could not go down the crater and lake to see the Blue Flame closely. However, the sunrise view is really awesome. The hike was long and tiring but it is worthy. Gas mask is crucial as the smell of sulphur is quite strong. Give way to the sulphur miners as they are working as well.

Save money: dont get a guide. Definately rent a gas maks before heading there. Go by a car with many people if possible (allot cheaper and warmer than a motorbike) Park entrance price 100,000 rp in the week (including the night from friday to saturday) Heard about the legendary blue sulfur flames you can see in the night? and the... I went there a few weeks after toxic gases were released in March. Hence we were not allowed to descend to the crater rim. I reckon it one of my best experiences because we made it all the way by ourselves by motorcycle aka no guide nor car rent. I would suggest anyone who wants another level of experience try... More

This crater was in active volcano and It is a sulfur mining site. So the road to the crater has been arranged neatly and very wide. But there are some fairly steep roads. Better to come to Ijen Crater the previous day and stay around the ijen or camping in the field on the climbing post ijen. The journey takes... More

We could not visit and venture down to the Sulphur Lake because of warnings of Poisonous gases. But, we managed to catch the Blue Fire and see a great sunrise. The trek up is not difficult, if you really have difficulty, the miners will offer to push you up for a fee. The winds up there are really strong and... More

Started this hike at 2am so we would get to the top of the crater to see the blue fire. It's "flat" for the first kilometre, then quite a steep incline for about 1.5 kilometres and then it's actually flat for the last kilometre. Not going to lie, I'm not fit and found it quite tough. If you take regular... More

A place in which it totally rocks! I took 1 hour to go up, from first base, and 30 minutes goes down on a rocky path to the crater and to witness blue fire. for those who can't resist the cold, better to bring something warm or come when it's about to open for ascending. there provides gas mask for... I left hotel at around 12.30 AM and reached the entrance at around 1.30 AM. Waiter for my guide and had some hot drink in stall near the entrance. I am a bit slow in hiking so I ordered a guide for my own instead of going with a group. My guide was an excellent one, very patient when we... More
