Srirangam Ranganatha Swamy temple spread in 156 acres of land with several gopuras is a sight to behold. This huge temple is a Vishnu temple and thousands of devotees visit it on all days. Do visit this temple when at Trichy

One of the oldest temples in South India and a place to visit when near Trichy. Its on the outskirts and can be included as part of other temples in the neighbourhood. We visited during Dec holidays around Christmas time so it was heavily crowded.

As a Westerner unschooled in Hinduism the Srirangam Temple (full name Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple) can be confusing. It is massive--156 acres in size--the largest functioning Hindu temple in the world, and covered with statuary that gives mute homage to the ancient religion that inspired them. I hired a guide whose accent was difficult to understand and who claimed to speak six languages (I confirmed French as well).Even with piecing together his meaning, his explanations were essential as I failed to purchase a guide in advance,which I very much regret. I am tempted to offer, in this short review,explanations of the statuary from Wikipedia but I doubt anyone would be fooled. Instead, I offer up what snippets impressed me,with apologies to anyone who knows better how to interpret what I saw.
The temple is devoted to Vishnu, who is the ranking deity in Hinduism, and bas-relief statues depict aspects of his life. Of special interest to me, though, are the stories contemporaneous with the stonemasons.
Coming from an equestrian background I was attracted to the eight statues of horses rampant. Many of them depict a man stabbing a beast that is attacking the horse. The horse represents India,the beast represents Islam,and the man is Portuguese (who arrived at the end of the 15th century)! It turns out that when the Portuguese weren't plundering the locals they were defending them against the Arabs, and this is the part the masons--or more likely their supervisors--chose to remember in stone.
The complex consists of four gate towers,all of which were undergoing renovation so the best view I got of them was the green covering over the scaffolding.But they are huge and in my minds eye will be impressive when they are revealed. I went through the East Gate, North Gate,and West Gate, but not the South Gate because that is where Vishnu is sleeping, or so my guide told me.
This wasn't the only place I could not go. Missing the essential qualification of not being Hindu I was still able to visit 90 percent of the complex,an vast increase,apparently, after a recent change in policy.
All of it was a bit daunting,and I'm not sure a guidebook hastily reviewed would have given me the tools to appreciate the temple as I should. But it was absolutely worth the trip and if I ever get to return I will be better prepared.

Biggest Raja Gopuram is hi light to this Temple. Best day to visit this Temple is on Vaikunta ekadashi.Lord Vishnu looks much bigger than other places takes rest sesha nagu(Snake).Takes 2 to 5 hours for darshan in peak seasons.

It is a village temple of local god Ayyanar. Generally those who are the saviours of village have been worshipped as Ayyanars in Villages. The temple located on the banks of Auvergne in a serene atmosphere. I used to go to this temple for its natural surroundings and calm atmosphere. Nice temple for meditation

Magnificent temple, full of life and ceremonies every day. You can make the most of your visit to this temple and other wonderfuls of Trichy and surroundings hiring a local guide. We were two days with Saravonan and it was a great experience. Oficial guide, very nice person, with lots of information and happy to answer any question! He adapts the schedule to your interests. A Vaishnava temple. A reclining form of Hindu deity, Vishnu, faces South. Dravidian architecture. On an island in Cauvery river.
Temple area spread in seven enclosures to the temple, with 21 gopuram. Rajagopuram height is around 236 ft. which is said to be completed in the year 1987.Other 20 towers built during 14th and 17th centuries.
As per compilation of religious accounts, the deity idol is worshiped since Treta Yug. When Chola King established the Ranganathaswamy then, temple was as one of the largest temple complexes in the world.
The vimanam shrine over the sanctum sanctorum is shaped like Om-symbol and is plated with gold.
Sri Ranganathaswamy reclines on Adisesha, the coiled serpent.
The complex houses shrines of dozens of forms of Vishnu.
The Hall of 1000 pillars is a fine example of a planned structure.
The free darshan is available.

Beautiful temple, devotees should check out taking bath in the water at night , this water is super cool and has been collected for the whole day around the Lord, also its a very old temple worth visiting enroute Kumbakonam

Srirangam is a wonderful example of a temple town. Life in the town revolves around the happenings in the temple. If you are planning a trip to Srirangam, do check out for the temple's calendar of festivals online, so that you can be a part of the festivities associated with the temple. There are two decent hotels strategically located near the temple too. I was in Srirangam for a week from 9th April to 16th April 2014 at my mother's house. Since there were many festivals planned during this period, I could get a first hand experience of the enthusiasm the common man has for the festivals. Three to four days should be good to explore temples in and around Srirangam. Do take a walk from the main gopuram to Amma Mandapam to get a feel of the multitude of people visiting this place! There is an Art Museum too that houses an interesting collection of items in the temple premises.
