The "Parc National de Volcans" (or PNV as it's known by locals) lies along the Virunga Mountains, with 8 ancient volcanoes, which are shared by Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Just a short two hour drive from Rwanda's capital of Kigali, the park is a central location for exploring some distinctly Rwandan experiences. While a visit to the mountain gorillas is often at the top of visitor, the dramatic landscape also offers thrilling hiking and visits to the fascinating golden monkeys.

I hiked Mt. Bisoke a few years ago and have always been meaning to come back to post a review and a bit of a warning. This hike is EXTREMELY CHALLENGING. At the time of my hike I was a decently fit 22 year old...More

Donned in our khaki with our camera, iPhones & GoPro at the ready, we were bursting with excitement but nothing could truly prepare us for what we were about to encounter. We trekked for about an hour - which is of a medium scale -...More

Volcanoes National Park is a great place to experience either Gorilla or Golden Monkey treks. Both adventures are well coordinated and professionally done. Rwanda takes such pride in this park that everything well taken care of, no garbage all over the place.

This park has been helped by the Buffett family. The basecamp is more accommodating than some of the others we visited (although the actual trekking is handled the same in Uganda and Rwanda). While the guides want you to stay at least 20 feet away...More

Golden monkey tracking is a very nice experience and good value for money; the hike is easy, the golden monkeys are really cute and easy to observe as they come down the bamboo stems. Enjoy!

Can't afford $1500 for a one-hour gorilla permit? Have no fear: a permit for the golden monkeys is just $100 - and an amazing experience. I went on a day-trip with Individual Tours. It was $350 and worth it. I also recommend Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village...More

Seeing the gorillas is well worth slogging through the mud for hours on slick trails. They are majestic relatives (share 98 % of our DNA). The high mountain rainforest is so beautiful and awe inspiring. More than a “bucket list” item—a naturalists heaven.

This is the main draw for tourists to come to Rwanda and though there are two more 'active' national parks Volcanoes is the most visited by foreign tourists. Good facilities at park headquarters.

Bring your hiking shoes! You are sure to have a pretty good trek up the mountain and 100% guaranteed to see the mountain gorillas. The experience was beyond what I can explain in words. The price just doubled but still worth every penny. The Rwandan...More

We trekked for Gorillas one day and Golden Monkeys another. The Gorilla Trek was quite long (not technically difficult) at 8 - 10,000 feet. We are older (late 60's) and we were in a group of 4 much younger trekkers. I think they could have...More

Please use USD$. We never changed any money into local currency, and you will have a very hard time changing it back into $ if you do change any. I had a porter for the Golden monkey trek and gave him $10. I also gave... More
