Michael was recommended to me by one of his previous clients, and I am so glad! From the moment I contacted him to suggest me an itinerary for my first visit to Ethiopia, everything has been a breeze! Not only his ideas were good, but he was extremely flexible and happy to tailor-make the trip according to my interests. I did the classic itinerary Bahir Dar - Gondar - Simien Mountains - Lalibela. The tour guides that I have met who Michael uses for the historic parts of the tour are educated, knowledgeable, funny and speak great English. Michael himself guides in the mountains and you can feel how at home he feels up there. His cook is awesome and equipment is new and good quality. Apart from the attentive and professional service provided by Michael and his team, he proved himself as an incredibly caring and gentle person who went out of his way to help me when my flights were cancelled, overbooked and travel dates didn’t go exactly by the plan. Thank you Michael and the team for an outstanding trip! Will happily recommend Hikeinethiopia to anyone travelling to Ethiopia!

We had a truly amazing time on Hike in Ethiopia's Simien Mountain trek, organised by Haile Michael Ayelegne. We spent 5 days in the Simien Mountains (Sankaber to Buawhit) bookended with day tours of Gondar and Axum at the end of February 2020.  As other reviewers have mentioned Michael responds quickly to emails and gives very detailed information which enables you to prepare effectively for the trip. The most valuable thing that Michael provided us with when we were in Ethiopia was peace of mind. And believe me this should not be undervalued (since we tried to organise the latter part of our trip south of Addis ourselves and realised how challenging this is in Ethiopia!) Michael is totally reliable, he always arrived punctually to pick us up, is an excellent driver -no mean feat with all that livestock on the roads! - and dealt seamlessly with any issues that arose.   The trek was brilliantly organised with our bags and camping equipment moved seamlessly from camp to camp.  Michael's equipment is clean and high quality, especially the tents which you can easily spot at night by the reflective red tabs. The hot water bottle 'snakes' are an excellent touch and also help keep camera batteries warm overnight! Michael's team were great, very friendly, helpful and welcoming. We were provided with a fabulous tour guide, Bego, an excellent scout, Mogas, and a superb chef, Mr Fantastic, who cooked the best injera we had in Ethiopia. Trekking was tough but spectacular and highly rewarding with sightings of Ethiopian Wolf, Walia Ibex, Gelada Monkeys and many birds even the mythical Lammergeyer thanks to Bego. We ate extremely well, welcomed back from a days hiking with fresh popcorn and thyme tea followed by a delicious 3 course meal in the evening, thanks to Mr Fantastic who certainly lived up to his name! You've got to try the deep-fried banana! Note that we were caught out slightly by not having enough bihrr left to tip each team member so we gave some gifts instead (eg solar power pack) which we thought was nicer! So to sum up, it really was the trip of a lifetime, once Coronavirus is under control and travel restrictions are lifted we highly recommend you look no further and contact Michael for details!

Dear RebeccaRye, Thank you so much for a wonderful detailed review . It is so good you find the time with everything that is happening in UK. I wish you first and most important that you stay well and safe. I am so glad you appreciated my organisation and especially my great team. I have shared the review with them. The team were pleased with the gifts. They were special and useful and welcome. I like the description of my hot water bottles as 'snakes'. That is good! I thank you for recommending Hikeinethiopia tours for when this crisis is over. It brings hope to me that we get through this and will see each other again. Please stay well. Michael

Michael and his team provided an excellent hiking experience which resulted in three older women making it to the top of Ras Dashen, a dream come true. Our guide was knowledgeable about the local history, flora, fauna and paced the trip to allow comfort and success for a group of seven ranging from mid twenties to almost 65 years of age. Our cook provided safe and delicious meals to keep us trekking successfully, with a celebratory bottle of wine after hard or successful days. At night we were warmed with special hot water bottles to keep the chill out of our sleeping bags, and greeted with tea or coffee served in our tent in the morning. Due to having to get home sooner, our guide arranged for a burro to take me to the nearest town, along with the cook and burro man, and Michael sent a car to pick me up, provided wifi in the car to make arrangements, and he and the driver both helped me quickly repack my bags in the foyer of the hotel, racing me to the Gondar airport to make the flight to Addis with 15 minutes before take-off. He provided exceptional service to myself, and my son and friends, allowing us to have a safe, fun and exciting trip, and getting us out sooner to get home with the stress of our government calling us home as soon as possible. This is my second hike in the Simian mountains and I highly rate Michael and his team as an outstanding group.

Dear Lanicej, Thank you so much for finding time to write such a great review when you had so much else to worry with by getting home. I am really sorry your trek was cut short but also glad you made it to top of Ras Dashen. Both the photos are great. I hope the burro was more comfortable for you than it looks! I am glad my whole team could help you in the circumstances and, while you were with us, that you had a good time. I ask you to take much care and stay well. Please Come back for a third time when things improve. Thank you for using Hikeinethiopia tours. Michael

Micheal is a superb communicator and excellent organiser . From the moment when we started to organise our Simien mountain trek in July 2019 Micheal replied promptly to every email we sent . He organised a great itinerary for us in the Simiens . Once there we found that the equipment he provided ..tents, mats, sleeping bags, was top quality European gear. Hot water bottles were another luxury only Micheal provides .. His crew were first rate, with a brilliant cook so that we had a different meal every night and even a bottle of wine one night . We used Micheal only for a Simien mountain trek but he can organise tours for all over Ethiopia . He impressed us deeply as a highly focused competent tour operator . Seek no further..just use Micheal

I would strongly recommend Michael’s treks. Whilst we were planning our trek Michael’s responsiveness to our questions and detail of his answers was excellent, this gave us a great deal of confidence before we even left the UK for Ethiopia. Michael met us on the night before the trek with welcome drinks and a clear view of what the trek would entail so we felt 100% comfortable. Our journeys to and from the trek were comfortable and educational as Michael spent time answering all our questions about the people, history and traditions of Ethiopia. The trek itself was outstanding, we particularly liked the second part as there were no other tourists and we had the opportunity to meet local people. The food on the trek was excellent, Mr Fantastic and Abex were very attentive and made all efforts to give us the food we wanted, which was Ethiopian food. The cooks enthusiasm meant that we were often left refusing more food as we were completely full with the delicious creations put in front of us. Our scout Alem was a diamond, we got the impression that he genuinely cared for us, always being there to ensure we were safe, even when we didn’t know he was around, but never being intrusive – a lovely man. If a friend of mine was going on this trek, the only precautionary advice I would give was to make sure they had enough local money to tip each member of the trek individually as we were caught out and didn’t have enough to meet expectations. In short, the country is beautiful, Michael’s company is highly attentive to all your needs and the trek team were fantastic company. I would recommend anyone to use them.

Dear 815howardb , Thank you so much for your detailed and kind review. It was a pleasure to arrange the trek for you and R. That is a good photo of R. I am very happy that Mr Fantastic and the rest of the team looked after you well and I will share the review with them. I am sorry if you were embarrassed at all about tipping. Tipping is welcome by Ethiopians generally but there should be no expectation. They were all very happy. We all look forward to welcoming you back in Ethiopia again. Michael
