I have been in Ethiopia several times. I visited the nord and the center of Ethiopia. The first time I was there i met Alex (Amsalu). And he made that i came back every year. He is a very honest and funny guy who makes your trip one to never forget. He is a local who brings you everywere you want and show you anything you like and even more. He is a very caring guy who loves to show his country. I had a really good time with him! amsalutesfa@yahoo.com amsalu@ethionorthtrekking.com +251955195392

This place is a church inside an old ruined castle/palace. When we arrived there was a service going on, people taking their shoes off before going into the complex, everyone silent. We didn't want to disturb or offend anyone so we walked around the compound at first (which I'd recommend, some evocative views with the old trees poking out above the battlements). By the time we arrived back to the main gate a tour group arrived - to enter the complex proper go into the forecourt with the church then through the gate on the far right, someone will pop up and sell you the ticket. No need to remove your shoes. Going here on what seemed to be a saints day definitely added to the experience.

A fortified retreat on a hill top overlooking Gondar and its castles in the distance. The church founded by empress Mentewab was destroyed. The present one is new. The original paintings are in Debre Berhan Selassie church. Mentewab's palace is in ruins, but there are still enough remnants to get an idea of how she lived until the end of her life in 1773. There is a small museum near one of the towers with 17th century books (Ethiopian script on goat leather pages), some paintings and her bed and skeleton remains along side those of her son Iyasu and grandson Iyoas (strangled by her successor). This all according to the priest who showed me around (at no extra fee). Location 3.4 km (just over 2 miles) from the center of town (a nice hike up the hill behind the University hospital). Alternatively take public transport to the hospital (2 Birr) and take a bajaj from there (2 Birr if shared). Entrance fee 100 Birr
