This iron blow is a viewing platform over a now abandoned open cut mine in Queenstown. There are numerous information boards that explain its existence as well as the boom and bust story of mining in Queenstown. A metal viewing platform allows you to get over the top of this and get some stunning views.
Look - its free to visit and is barely 1km from the main highway that people take when travelling to Strahan from Hobart so its worth stopping here so a quick look, picture and to stretch the legs on a otherwise long drive. Would barely add 20 minutes the the trip.

Worth a stop on the way to Queenstown looks like the surface of the moon bare barren landscape all around. Slowly returning back to nature with vegetation starting to grow back interesting story of the mining industry.

A short detour from the road, opposite the walking track to Horsetail Falls, worth stopping here for a few moments to take in the view.

On our way from derwent Bridge to Strahan, we took the opportunity to stop at this lookout. One of the reasons being that we could not fathom what there would be to see given the surrounding landscape we had passed on our way.
To put it bluntly, the landscape leading up to Queenstown is dead....literally. Gormanston epitomises this lack of life feeling. So when we saw the signs advising of a lookout we thought why not?
We were left stunned (for use of a better word) The devastation that had resulted from years of mining was profoundly thought provoking for me, What you can see from the lookout is simply put, a lifeless landscape with little to no hope of ever regaining a semblance of life. I am not a politically bent greeny by any means, however looking at what years of mining can do to a landscape makes be think surely there is a way to better treat the environment whilst obtaining the resources we as a population need to survive.
The lookout itself is at the end of a sky bridge, be prepared to go without a hat or if necessary tie it around your neck as it does get quite windy at the end of the bridge. The day we went it was freezing as well so long stays probably are not the norm. Do yourself a favour though and have a read of the history of the area on the various signs around the lookout.
It is basically a lookout overlooking an old open cut mine, however, any human with a sense of perspective will take this opportunity to view what history has left us and ponder the future as a result.
Highly recommend a visit to this lookout if in the area.

On our way from Hobart to Strahan, we did not stop at any other lookouts or walks, but randomly decided as we approached Queenstown, took the 900m turnoff for this lookout. I was expecting a view of the valley beyond, which you do get, however was blown away with what was below, emerald coloured water against orange oxide walls of rock. We were there on a day with no wind and it was simply breathtaking to stand and take the surrounding scenery in.

Disused open-cut mine slowly filling with water. The lookout highlights the devastation caused by timber felling and mining in the area. Info boards give you some background on the history of the mine. Worth making the stop. Directly across the highway from Horsetails Falls.

This lookout was definitely worth a stop! Just out of Queenstown is the turn off for this place and across the road is the Horsetail falls. There is a short walkway overlooking scenic views

Off to the “Iron Blow” lookout - which was amazing. A huge, abandoned open cut mine which has now become an attraction. Hiked to Horsetails Falls. Both spots were stark, windy, moon-like landscapes. So windy .....

Right off the main road, and well worth the 5 min excursion to have a quick look. The water is really pretty.

This is worth the trip up the windy dirt road especially in summer when the water is a vivid blue from the high copper content in the water. The Iron Blow was a mine originally started for gold but quickly converted to extract the large quantities of copper they found and it is copper leaching out into the flooded pit that gives the vivid blue colour. There is a wheelchair accessible walkway/ramp that goes out over part of the pit for a better view into the pit. Views of the surrounding region are quite attractive too.
