Fabulous - Highly recommended
May 2021
Off to the “Iron Blow” lookout - which was amazing. A huge, abandoned open cut mine which has now become an attraction. Hiked to Horsetails Falls. Both spots were stark, windy, moon-like landscapes. So windy .....

Natural wonder
Apr. 2021
The day we visited this lookout it was blowing a gale and raining but it was still a beautiful lookout. Great history surrounds this mine and the water was amazingly blue. If you are scared of heights then beware that the walkway goes out over the mine so don't look down.

Well worth a visit, the water is so blue and picturesque it almost looks fake. Just down the road is the Linda Cafe which is also well worth a visit for amazing food and service.

Luna view
Apr. 2021 • Couples
Worth a stop on the way to Queenstown looks like the surface of the moon bare barren landscape all around. Slowly returning back to nature with vegetation starting to grow back interesting story of the mining industry.

Impressive Hole-Once A Copper Mine
Jan. 2021
It was misty and raining and miserably cold in mid-summer but the hole that was "Iron Blow" was impressive and the lookout provided a good view in the mist. Sadly the scenery around was not viewable. The mine dated back to 1884 and was identified as a gold mine, sold to some investors and then to Mt Lyell in 1892 and it became their first major venture in copper mining and was mined until 1929. Well worth a look even in the rain.

Right off the main road, and well worth the 5 min excursion to have a quick look. The water is really pretty.

Other worldly vista. Worth a stop.
Dec. 2020
We didn't really know what to expect so had a great surprise both here and with Horsetail Falls opposite. The vista is other worldly and kind of feels like you've landed on an alien planet.

Well worth the drive up. Walk straight out on the lookout from the carpark. Highly recommend you see both this and Horsetail Falls if you can.

A lovely shade of blue

A short detour from the road, opposite the walking track to Horsetail Falls, worth stopping here for a few moments to take in the view.

Fantastic view

Great place to stop before Queenstown - just stopped out of curiosity and were pleasantly surprised. The signage at the site does a good job of explaining it as well.

Best in summer /sunny days for vivid blue lake in ex-mining pit.
Oct. 2019
This is worth the trip up the windy dirt road especially in summer when the water is a vivid blue from the high copper content in the water. The Iron Blow was a mine originally started for gold but quickly converted to extract the large quantities of copper they found and it is copper leaching out into the flooded pit that gives the vivid blue colour. There is a wheelchair accessible walkway/ramp that goes out over part of the pit for a better view into the pit. Views of the surrounding region are quite attractive too.
