    Find lemurs!
Although less nice than the Mantadia section, this park gives easy opportunities to find lemurs. The chances are high to find indris, diademed sifakas, bamboo lemurs and common brown lemurs. The trails are very easy and sometimes a bit too unnatural for my taste. You can combine this park with Mantadia (same entrance fee) on the same day.

Be prepared to get off the path
We went to the reserve in the afternoon with a group of 8. Our guide kept the pace Mora Mora and told us about different plants and animals as we came across them. Path can be uneven or natural terrain, so be prepared with solid footwear. You never know what you will see, but lemurs and chameleons were spotted.

Great Place to See Indri and Sifaka
This park is a short drive from Andasibe. It is a bit crowded. We walked mostly on Circuit Indri 2. There is tree cover over almost all of the trail. Saw an owl, the indri and the Diademed sifaka. We heard the call on the indri before we saw it.

We visited the park during the Easter weekend holidays. Originally, we planned to do Mantadia, but we ended up going to a different park that was easier to access. Unfortunately, it was quite crowded with local people who were picnicking next to the area, and there were too many people on the trails.

I've been to many reserves in Madagascar before, but Analamazaotra/Andasibe seemed more "industrial" than the other parks. Fortunately, our guide was very professional. Although we had already seen lemurs during our visit to Vakona Lemurs Reserve, seeing them in their natural habitat was even better.

We had a fantastic guide, Christof. He was with us for both a night walk and the next day. We saw many lemurs, including the Indri, with their interesting calls. The walk was easy, despite going off the main paths at times to see the lemurs. it was one of the best park experiences we had in Madagascar.

My husband and I spent a wonderful morning at Analamazaotra with our local National Park guide William, and our Za Tour guide Michel. Note that the reviews below that state this reserve is Vakona Lodge’s Lemur Island are incorrect – there are no lemurs jumping on you to eat bananas here (thank goodness). Instead, Analamazaotra Reserve and Mantadia National Park comprise the amazing Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, and this is a real forest.

Many people go to Analamazaotra to see the ridiculous (in a good way) Indri indri. These are the largest lemurs – they are ridiculous looking as they do not have the typical long tail of the lemur, but instead have a short bobbed tail. They look a bit like a panda gone wrong. And even more ridiculous – they sing! Just go to YouTube and search for “indri singing” and you will get an earful. Absolutely amazing. We could hear the Indris singing during the morning walk, and William took us to a group of Indris that day. There was a mom and a baby, and the baby was sooooo energetic, hopping from tree to tree without a care in the world. We never did see them singing, but that’s what return trips are for.

Although the Indri were the highlight of this walk (and one of the critters my husband most wanted to see in Madagascar, so another tick off the mental wish list), the park holds many other treasures. We had seen Diademed Sifakas from a great distance the day before on the Mantadia side of the National Park, but at Analamazaotra they were up close and personal. And although we didn’t get great pictures due to our increasingly fogging camera (yup, it’s the rainforest) we were able to observe how gorgeous these creatures are – golden/orange arms and legs, black face ringed in white, with a little black crown atop their heads. And toward the beginning of the hike, we were treated to a pair of Eastern Gray Bamboo Lemurs. They were pretty secretive and stayed back behind a stand of trees behind a little ridge, but we were persistent and were able to catch a glimpse every now and then. So this was the perfect day for lemur lovers.

We had a great day for reptiles as well. At the beginning of the hike William took us to see a Madagascar Tree Boa which apparently has a favorite spot to sun and warm up. Toward the end of the hike William found a massive Parson’s Chameleon, absolutely incredible. The forest, itself, is beautiful and green, with all kinds of interesting insects, trees, vines, and small herps. No leeches this day (unlike the day before in Mantadia).

Analamazaotra Reserve was the most crowded park that we visited in Madagascar, but that is not too surprising given its close-to-town location. Even so, and although we were there during the week between Christmas and New Years, we still did not find the park to be overwhelmingly crowded. Trails were easy, especially compared to hiking that we had done in Mantadia and Masoala National Park. We highly recommend Analamazaotra Reserve for a great day out in nature, and for an excellent chance to get up close to both Indris and Diademed Sifakas.

We enjoyed our walk through the park and saw many lemurs, also the Indri Indri and their calling noise was quite impressive.

In some parts there are too many tourists in one spot though.

If you want to see more lemurs then here's the place! We also saw a family of golden cifacas and a family of indris. The indri call is amazing. I recorded it on my phone to be able to look back at it.
The guides want to make sure you see the wildlife so this is less of a walk and more of - let's make sure you see stuff - which was great!
