This simple nature preserve represents a valuable effort by a new generation to turn around years of ecological neglect. An undermanned facility and less-than-ideal conditions for its captive turtles and alligators testify to a lack of proper funding, but the tortugario remains a worthy place...More

We have visited this turtle sanctuary many times with many visitors. We always enjoy and especially recommend you go in the AM ( 10 or so ) and take the boat ride for 200 or so pesos.

If you are visiting Manzanillo, you must visit this place. Just understand this is not a world class zoo but it is a great sanctuary that does great work with what they are given. Here's what you should know, this is more than a turtle...More

We booked this excursion with Hectours through the Las Hadas hotel. Now it is not normally something we would book but my son wanted to see the turtles so we did it and glad we did. The bus ride was a tad long...at least 40...More

This turtle sanctuary plays an important role in collecting the turtle eggs from the black sand beach of Cuyutlan that is a popular hatching area for the large sea turtles. Although turtles and their eggs are protected by the government, many Mexicans still collect them...More

What a phenomenal experience at this facility. Definitely worth doing! Releasing babies into the sea was ethereal! If you find your way to this small community put this on your list of things to do.

While you are in Cuyutlan, Colima the tortugario is a classic place to visit and tour. Located right off the beach, it features sort of a zoo with all kinds of turtles, crocodiles, iguanas and also turtle eggs plus access to the Cuyutlan lagoon and...More

It is an amazing experience, especially for kids… You have a walk through the turtle reproduction process, egg hatching, etc.. but best of all, during season the kids release turtles into the sea.. It is very educational.. they also have a jungle boat tour where...More

interesting to see the valuable work these folks are doing to save the sea turtle and a chance to see crocodiles as well. Not much else to see but at times you can help with taking the newly-hatched turtles to the sea.

Can be hot, use sunscreen. Staff well trained and gave us valuable information about turtles. There are some rescued large adult turtles that are kept there for rehabilitation having been injured by boats or predators. Did not take the jungle boat tour on this visit.

We will be stopping in Manzanillo as part of cruise mid-March. We would like to come to El Tortugugario to see turtles, but want to ensure that there will be turtles at this time of year. Can you please let me know. Thank you

We have plans to come in by cruise ship and take a taxi for a group of four up to the Turtle Preserve. What do we need to know about using taxis, hours on the Turtle Preserve, hours for the boat ride at the Turtle Preserve? How much time should we allow between Manzanillo and the Turtle Preserve? Thanks for any help!

It takes 1 hour on the Libre (free road) and 50 minutes on the Cuota (Toll Highway) to travel from Manzanillo to Cuyutlàn. Viewing the Cuyutlàn Tortugario can be done in 30 minutes (extra 10 minutes if you watch the video... More
