The island's famous moai statues were carved from the volcanic rock of this mountain and are scattered across its slopes in various stages of completion.

There is nothing to dislike here! The tour guide was local and knowledgable and gave a great insight into the lives of the local people, who produced the Moai heads. This was one of our favourite landmarks, not much comes close to this. The photo...More

This is probably the coolest place I have visited, ever. Easter Island has been my #1 place to see since I was 11, so I ended up enjoying everything. This place was just something special. You can see the quarry and then go to the...More

This should be number one Easter Island attraction on Easter Island. Hands down. It is magical. It is a mix of nature and spirituality you will never forget. This is where humanity and mother nature gets together. When you come back home and watch the...More

Watching the ghost-like moai scattered around the hill slope is an unforgettable experience. To me, this is the defining spot in all of the island seeing that these moai have been untouched unlike all of the other standing moai on the island. And don't forget...More

Seeing some of the unfinished Moai being carved in the mountain is magnificent. There are over 300 of the Moai at this site. Lots of space for people and there is some hiking involved if you wish, but very little.

Rano Raraku gives you a good idea of a Moai production site, as the carving of the statues wasn't done in someone's backyard! Unfinished Moai's can be seen in the rocks next to collapsed ones in the grass. Those still standing (or leaning) are magnificent...More

We had a private guide and he really helped us see the details and explain what we are looking at. We would have missed a lot of the half carved Moai that are still attached to the side of the mountain and some of the...More

An interesting place to visit. A pleasant walk through the birth place of the Moai. Guides explain the process of carving the statues. Questions still remain as to how the Moai were transported across the island . Great photo opportunities.

Seeing all of the moai being cut from the volcano is amazing. It's a short (but up and down slope on uneven ground) walk to see everything. Not challenging, but take your time and wear good shoes.
