Hiking difficult especially at the end, very steep climbs, not recommended for elderly people or people with knee problems. But the view at the top is sensational, it's worth the suffering. Most beautiful place I've ever seen.

The trail to glaciar is far from El Chaltén (37 km in ripio road). The last 13 km is an experience on the lunar surface. Craters, holes and bumps.
They want to sell the entrance ticket, so they lie saying that the trail is “muy suave”, which means “very smooth”. It is a median level trail with no rewarding view. What you see after finishing the trail is almost the same as what you can see before. Don’t waste your time and money in such a wonderful place like El Chaltén.

We took the Las Lengas bus at the el chalten bus terminal, for ARS 200 return. The bus can also pick you up from your hostel if you make a reservation or booking in advance. The Las Lengas bus ride was excellent, and the driver made a couple of photostops for us. The bus ride took about 2 hours one way from el chalten to the base of the hike to glacier huemul. As you have to enter the estancia or private reserve, there is a fee of ARS 100 per person. The hike itself is an uphill hike, about 2km long one way. Its a pleasant hike uphill, and as you approach the glacier, the turqoise lagoon emerges!

Glaciar Huemul is over 1 hr drive from El Chalten, on a private property. If you do not have a car, book a spot on a daily van from Las Lengas (at bus terminal or arranged by hotel front desk).
It's a nice hike on forest covered with moss, following a creek with many waterfalls along the way. The end is a pristine lagoon with a blue glacier perched over it. To the opposite side of the glacier, you can have fabulous views of the north side of Fitz Roy mountain. We also saw lots of condors flying over the area the day we went, quite a treat.

This is well worth doing. The glacier is impressive with waterfalls down the rocks and the lovely blue coloured lake in front. Very nice. The hike was fine, nothing difficult and not too long either. Plenty to see along the way. We actually just walked to a viewpoint of the glacier and lake and I didn't know you could actually walk up to the water- I can imagine that would be even better because I was impressed enough with be viewpoint we went to!

The blue lake emerging from glacier has made the view superb of this glacier ..It was sooo serene blue ..It takes 45 minutes to 1 hr hiking from point where mini van drops you off and you need to buy 100 pesos ticket for hike since one has to pass through private property but hike is worth the effort ...The transport company should give more time than 2 hrs to enjoy the view as up and down almost takes 2 hrs ...We booke dwith Las lengas and they gave just 2 hrs ..Try to find the company which waits for more than 2 hrs ...

Really! I hike a lot in my life and this is one of the most stunning short hikes that I have ever taken. 45/50 minutes up a steep trail, but way worthy! You also pay a small fee but also so so worthy!!!

We took a half day trio to this small glacier, close to Lago del Desierto. Just 45 minutes walk uphill and you are in front of a small, superblue lagoon and the glacier.
Very good tour on a lazy day, and when the weather is not good for Fitz Roy.

El Chalten is a walking town, that's no news. There are so many jewels hidden in the woods, that a single journey sometimes is not enough. So, I strongly recommend this one. The beauty of this place will knock you off. First you have to go by car or van to Lago del desierto. That's at the end of route 23, a really rocky, bumpy road, not recommended for first timers to drive by. The route has an amazing scenery itself, and as you go further it gets even more beautiful. As you arrive to Lago del desierto you have two things to enjoy there, the lake itself (witch has ferries that cross you to the other side, really close to the chilean border, and to Vespignani Glacier) and the trekking path to Glaciar Huemul. You have to pay a fee ($200 at the camping place) and then walk along an enchanted forest that looks like Narnia. It's about one hour walking, and just when the path gets really steep (you have ropes to help yourself) that's when you are about to arrive. Suddenly it apears before you, the beautiful lake and the hanging glacier. Besides the stunning sights of the lago del desierto from the top. You can't miss this!!!

We paid the US$20 not really expecting to get our moneys worth but it had been recommended so we went. A good hours drive from El Chalten and the gravel road is not great. A wander through the most magical forest I have ever seen, complete with babbling brook was amazing. The glacier was also spectacular and well worth the 2 kms walk/climb. Would not recommend this walk to those with poor mobility. A little bit challenging towards the end.
