Great opportunity for experienced trekkers

Only for experienced trekkers or with guide. There are not many people. If you're alone, the National Park will officialy not allow you to go. There's no need for a harness, if you cross over just after the lake after the first camp... You can proceed to the Vuelta Huemul, a very diverse trek. It's even possible to go on the Southern Ice Field, if there's no snow on the glacier... The view of the southern Icefield is incredible. Be aware, weather can change very fast & the trail is not well indicated. You need to carry all your food, a tent & clothes!

This was probably the best experience in my life. We did the Huemul circuit in 4 days and on day 2 you get to paso del Viento and catch your first glimpse of the hielo sur. It is magnificent.
To get there you need to have good equipment (harness, karabiners, slings, tent, camp stove, fuel, food, sleeping mat, sleeping bag, walking poles, good boots, possibly crampons and axe if you do it in the winter-early spring, etc) and you need to be experienced. Navigation is not always easy, you need to wade or cross glacial rivers with a zip line, walk on moraines and a glacier, scramble, descend on steep, fragile terrain, camp on snow... you need to be confident and completely self sufficient. If you have this skills, do this trek. It will be one of the highlights of your life.
We did it in October and there was still plenty of snow. Fell in love with the place. h, and there was no wind when we did it. Totally awesome!
Don't forget your sunscreen, even if it's cloudy. Always put it on as the sunlight reflected by the glacier is really strong.

They call it Windy Pass for a reason

Amazing place but you will need a guide or climbing experience. The trails are not marked well and there are a few river crossings. If you know how to repel across rivers, there are lines there. The wind is super intense, so I highly recommend hiking poles in case you lose your balance.

Hands Down the most amazing hike and place I've been to!!

This is a place that normally is done on a four day trek called the Huemul Circuit. You get to the Paso de Viento on day two and it is unbelievably amazing. It is a really hard hike that takes 4 days, is all camping and is really remote. Once you're on the trail you are on your own. When I did it there was only six other people I saw/camped with the whole time I was on the trail. You have to do two tyrolean traverses (crossing a river on a pulley) and you NEED the gear, first the national park office checks and secondly I would not recommend trying to ford the river. However, all this pays off in what has been the most amazing hike I've ever done. When you get to the pass and see the icefield it is awe inspiring!! I have honestly never felt so small in my life! If you are fit and want to do something remote and see some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen, I cannot recommend this hike highly enough!!
