A bit out of the way from most of Skye's attractions, I'm glad we were able to stop for a quick visit into Shilasdair. There were quite a few varieties of yarn and many colors to choose from. Skeins seemed a bit on the shorter side, but I'm used to being able to pick up giant skeins in the US!... More

Dear Cattywhompus - I'm pleased you made the journey to visit the shop and enjoyed the yarn as well as the views. Yarn in the UK is usually sold by weight so our skeins contain either 50 or 100gr. This gives you the chance to chose a wide variety of colours if you so wish. Hope you will make the... More

My wife is a knitter, and she wanted to visit this shop which is a challenge to find and get to even in the best of weather. However, if you are a knitter, this is a holy pilgrimage and well worth every mile of the drive. It is seven miles down a single lane road off a B level road,... More

Hi Rich - thank you so much for your lovely review of my shop and also for the advice to drivers unfamiliar with our narrow roads! I'm so pleased you and your wife made the journey and hope she will have a great time knitting with the yarn she purchased. More

What a great little shop that actually turned out to be a worldwide supplier of naturally dyed wool from its humble location! Friendly owner and lots to see and buy!

Housed in wonderful old buildings, stocks their own naturally dyed yarns along with patterns and needles etc, and also sells garments made from the yarn. Access track is unsuitable for anything larger than a car. Camper van drivers please note.

Loved the colours. Somewhat disappointed that we could not get wool from the St Kilda breeds, which was sold out. Having been to St Kilda that would have been a nice bonus. Nevertheless, the service, experience and the range of yarns available were very much worth the visit. A wonderful place to stop and browse on the Waternish

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a positive review. I have been in touch with Blacker Yarns and the new supply of the St Kilda laceweight has actually arrived with them today! I have ordered some and will be happy to send it to you if you wish. More

A bit of a trek but well worth the effort. Delightful shop and gorgeous yarns. Helpful staff with great selection of ready made clothing, yarns, patterns and accessories. Buy more than you think you should…. they do mail order if you hesitated.

Glad you made the journey to find us - sadly you probably didn't get much of a view from the shop - Skye is called 'The Island of Mists' after all! But pleased that you enjoyed your visit and went home well stocked up. More

Small shop but incredibly beautiful location by Lochbay. Very friendly staff, and yarns available from various local breeds and even very soft baby camel wool (not local, I think), many using traditional dyes. Various knitted items of clothing are also for sale and beginners knitting kits. There is also an interesting small exhibition about local dying methods with a DVD... More

Thank you very much for taking the time to write such a positive review about your visit. Hand made goods may often appear expensive - but when you think that it will usually take a knitter at least a month to hand knit each garment and add on the fact that the VAT adds 20% to my prices I think... Fascinating look into the wool-harvesting and hand-dying (with NATURAL plant-based dyes) of yarns! Lovely shop with an AMAZING view! I'm not a knitter, but we spent a good deal of time looking through knitting kits for the do-it-yourselfers, as well as browsing a wide variety of beautiful, hand-made sweaters, shawls, shirts, mittens, hats, and scarves. I bought a remarkably-soft scarf... More

As a spinner and a natural dyer, I was in seventh heaven here. This store has a variety of yarns that are either the natural color of the wool or dyed with natural dyes (plant materials, insects, lichens, etc) only. The colors achieved are magnificent. Any one interested in fiber arts must go here. The setting is beautiful and not... More

Having visited nearby Skyeskyns, I was not allowed to leave Waternish until we had visited this amazing yarn place. Hard to describe for a non-knitter like me but the buildings and the interior of the shop were worth the visit alone, let alone the amazing views over the Atlantic towards the Hebrides. While she browsed the lovely natural dyed yarns... More
