Fortunately we were staying nearby and were returning to our hotel as a service ended at 7.30pm on a Saturday night so as people were leaving we quietly popped in. And what sights greeted us. A huge building with massive pillars and arched roof so familiar in many cathedrals in Europe, a beautiful altarpiece and tow side altars. Then you notice the rear of the church, a choir area, again more familiar in cathedrals, two more chapels facing the rear with stunning altars. Excellent. It just makes you wonder why with such beauty the church doesn’t make it more available for public viewings to help with the upkeep and boost the town tourism.

A majestic edifice of worship and one of the most important in the city, it is an inspiring sight.
Built on the site of the largest Mosque that was demolished in 1424 it was a further few centuries before completion was called.
But the wait was more than worth it, whilst gazing in admiration at its magnificence.

Built from the ruins of the Almohad mosque back in 1424 this church is over 600 years old and is pretty impressive. You do not need long for a visit (I was inside less than 1/2 hour) but it is well worth it especially as it is just €3 per adult to enter. The altar piece is a work of art and dates from around 1560. The orange tree courtyard where you enter and exit the Church is very pleasant and sets the feeling of a strong sense of culture and religious history.

Only a few steps away from the Museo de la Ciudad, towering the Andalusian late- Gothic style church, that was built- as it happened very often in Spain - on the place of an old mosque. That we adore now, the Patio de Los Naranjos, remained from the time, when a mosque was standing there and served as an ablution patio for the Muslims. The result of a long-developing - four hundred years - a mixed style, very attractive building, that was continually growing. Every century left its addition on Santa Maria de la Asuncion.
If you are visiting it, don’t get lost in between the three naves, and the numerous side chapels. Don’t miss to look up in the central nave, and marvel the details of the vaults. Most of the visitors adore the richly decorated golden high altar of the main nave, but my favorite is a chapel(?) in a central position, fenced around and decorated with wooden carvings.
Unquestionably a beautiful church, but I have seen better ones.

This is an impressive church with a lot of interesting historical aspects which are of course fully described in every good guide of Andalusia.

The church here is extremely flamboyant full of color and gold . There are many statues to see and costumes as well. There is a small museum which could be easily missed and is worth dropping in on

This cathedral is easy to find because there are signposts also it is close to the Carmona city museum (Museo de Ciudad). It resembles the Seville Cathedral but without the tower. Most important, without the crowds and lines and no opportunity to take your time. Here you can take as much time as you want.
It was built on the site of a mosque and outside there is a metal plaque mentioning Juderia which I don't understand but suggests that at some time Jews were at least given access to the area. I'm not sure when either the mosque or the cathedral was built but obviously long after the Romans departed. There was a convent close by but that has closed years ago. There are other churches as well but this one is central, and if your time is limited, see this one. Photography is allowed and there is a one euro entrance fee.

You may be put off by the unimpressive exterior of this church, but go in anyway. The interior is unusually well maintained for one of these old beautiful churches, and unlike all too many of the large city cathedrals, this small-town church till maintains a sense of propriety, peace and stillness. One could actually go here to pray without being jostled by endless crowds as in big cathedrals like Seville's. The church is built full of ornate detail which has been reverently kept up. Stop in the courtyard to take a look at the orange trees grove - reportedly this is one of the remnants of what the Moors had here before the Reconquest that was still left in place when they built this church. Also a plaque in the courtyard indicates that in this church is the oldest written evidence of Christianity in the greater Seville area, a liturgical calendar left by the Visigoths.

The Church, like most in Europe, was old, has a certain charm and beautifully lit at night. The doors were locked when we arrived, so we only visited the exterior. It was worth the walk down from the Plaza.
