This is one of the greatest castles in Ireland! You ask WHY? Because it is a true pure Irish Tower Castle! Grace is buried on Clare Island in the ancient Abbey. In 2003 when I first went over to Ireland from the USA, I had...More

A bit misleading, since it's not really much of a castle per se, but more of a watch tower, or castle keep. It's still quite interesting driving up to it, as you can literally park right beside it as you step back into time. For...More

We stopped by Grace O'Malley's keep outside of Newport again. This time my father was in tow with us. The weather was great for pictures. It wasn't open for interior exploration, but that didn't stop us from taking plenty of pics on the outside. Definitely...More

This looks like there might be more to it than Kildavnet (One of Grace O'Malleys other castles) but it was undergoing renovation and was locked when we visited. Shame, it looks quite interesting from the outside.

It is grand to drive at leisurely pace from Newport to Mulranny, to meander down the many lanes to the left and discover treasures.. Coming in sight of this castle keep/watchtower was sheerly magical. A wild place, sea and seaweed and a watchful heron. Leave...More

This castle is not that easy to find. You have to take a small side road between Newport and Mulranny (coming from Newport, it is to the left). There is a sign, but it says "Carrickahowley Castle" instead of Rockfleet Castle. The castle (which is...More

This is one of Grace O'Malley's castles. Not really furnished but redone in a very authentic manner. Obtain key at house next to castle if unopened

Beautiful castle in great condition in a very scenic location right on the edge of the sea. Easy to get to and definitely worth a look. Not open to the public yet but looks like they are working on that. Shall return when they do.

We visited here on our recent family holiday, the castle is usually open to the public however it's currently closed for renovations. therefore I can't really describe much apart from its outside appearance and location, both of which are beautiful.

Off the beaten track but signposted for the visitor it's well worth a visit to see a "pirate's" castle built at the water's edge. Didn't get access to the inside but had a really good look all around it. There's quite a bit of history...More
