It is quite a walk in towards this stark, black lava field. You hike on a boardwalk through the field and it takes about 40 minutes to get to the start of the main viewing area. On the hike, you will wonder what planet you are on...it is so unusual. Even the drive to get to the main parking lot... More

We went to the krafla power plant (not the fields). It was very interesting to see how the geothermal plant worked - video was quite helpful, and to better understand the geology (plant sits right on mid atlantic ridge). Tour was useless - guide did not explain anything so you just saw equipment. Still, it was free and interesting, so... More

Very impressive. Paths could be a bit slippery. Get good shoes. Possible to reach that place from the "town", around 13 km walking.

Extremely enjoyable walk, despite the strong and cold wind Takes about 15 min to reach the edge of the lava field, but mostly is at the same elevation on a very well beaten dirt track, so easy for every age Once reached the edge of the field, a wood planked walkway facilitate ascending to the mud pits and the lava... Very nice couple of photos. That's it. It is on the road, so you don't loose any time by stopping and makes for some good shots.

Probably the weirdest landscape you'll see, all those geography lessons leap off the page here. Krafla also offers an easy walk to the Viti crater and plenty of sulphur and geothermal activity.

The Viti crater just below Krafla is full of beautiful ultramarin water. You can walk around the crater and see the geothermal power station which is there as well.

My husband and I could not stop looking at each other and asking if this were real! Do yourself a favor and go out past the boardwalk and take the hikes through the lava fields. We were pretty much the only two people there (seems to be a theme in Iceland...) and it was like we were on another planet.... More

All I could do was stand and stare in awe at the magnificence of the scene before me. Its a bit of a walk to get to the site of the most recent eruption, but it's an easy walk and well worth it.
