Very snowy

Interesting area, road to the viti crater was too much for some cars, but OK for 4x4s. Steam everywhere.

Very disappointing because of the snow. Completely covering the crater and the lava field. Better go down the road to Hverir to see some action. Maybe this place is a summer only destination or when snow cover is at a minimum.

This area has a very weird soft terrain. It was covered with ice but the mud below is so soft that it does not feel stable and feels like sliding. The nearby craters are ok. If you a fan of lava fields or want to see snow and hot water together then you must visit else skip.

In winter you will not even see the crater, but the views from the top are cool. Also the road is uphill and slippery so you will have to walk the last 2-3 kms.

Whilst driving around Myvatn, you should come across these lava fields. The sight is simply out of this world, one cannot even imagine how it looks in real sight, the photos just don't do justice, it is miles and miles of broken lava with the odd pools of water or colours. Amazing.

We visited in March on a cold and blustery day, with some snow. Maybe this gave the area some extra charm, because it all looked strange and beautiful. We were able to see everything and walk around the most interesting areas. The entire region looked like a moonscape while we were there (I guess if it snowed on the moon)... More

Beautiful accommodations, very modern, clean lines and well designed and comfortable. Beautiful views of Hverfjall Crater and Myvatn Lake. Great location for us to fit in all that we want to do! And we upgraded so we have a jacuzzi! Love that!!! An absolute must as they partner with Grove Travel and it is right here on site for all... More

We went with a full snow cover with high winds. It needed a 4x4 to get to the top but wasn't the best in the weather. Most of tge reviews are when the weather was was better. Worth visiting but I don't think the experience is the same when most of the area is covered in deep snow.

I loved this area. There was so much geothermal activity going on. While is pales in comparison to Yellowstone, I've not seen this much geothermal activity concentrated in a single place anywhere else. At one point you're driving up a hill in a green Iceland and in an instant you're starting down into someplace that's absolutely surreal. Very easy walking... More
