We rented a car in Akureyri to drive to Dettifoss and the rental company (akureyrirentacar.is) representative told us to take the east road for the better views. We drove there over Route 1 and took the eastern road (864) as recommended. That road was ROUGH!...More

Maybe due to the fact that by the time we have seen Dettifoss we have seen A lot of waterfalls in Iceland. Yes it is the biggest in Europe but I personally did not find it that amazing. It is not picturesque I found. I...More

Dettifoss is a waterfall in Vatnajökull National Park in Northeast Iceland, and is reputed to be the most powerful waterfall in Europ-an average of 96,500 gallons of water crosses its bow every single second. Such is its force, the mist from the falls are visible...More

Stairs and a trail can get you close but be prepared to get very wet. The wind was not on our side and we got a good shower. Since we all had rain gear, no one cared. The views were worth the effort.

We took the super jeeps off roading to get near the incredible water fall. It took hiking with ski poles and snow mobile boots a few kilometers to the falls from the stopping point. You MUST go with a guide in a super jeep who...More

Had planned to visit it from the eastern side (via 864) on one day and the western side (via 862) on the next day. The drive from Ring Road (1) up along 864 was rough. After leaving 1 and entering 864 it was gravel road...More

This falls is incredible. The amount of water falling over it is intense and the falls is surrounded by the lava rock which makes you feel like you're on the moon or something. It had rained when we went and the path was pretty wet...More

We reached Dettifoss from the southern entrance to the national park. The road was fine to get there but looked rougher heading farther north. Getting to the falls requires a short, easy walk through rocky terrain. The falls are impressive with a huge flow of...More

Dettifoss has surpassed Gullfoss as my favourite waterfall in the world...and I'm from Ontario, the province with Niagara Falls! Dettifoss is by far the most powerful and dangerous waterfall I have ever seen. Untamed and wild, the ability to walk right up to its edge...More

Someone think Kubrick shots here the real moon landing. Incredible landscape, with lunar colors, stones and atmosphere. At one point Dettifoss shows his power: massive, incredible, stunning waterfall. Intensive sound. Wow!!!

It was a bit slippery last month but nothing to really stop anyone from taking a short hike that took us around 20 minutes at an easy pace. There is also a path that cuts off to the right that takes you towards Selfoss (the... More

While I was there I did not encounter any bugs or insects. Iceland was actually pretty bug free when I was there in August, but that might be different when you go. With the amount of mist in the air I doubt you will run... More
