Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

One of my top five beautiful areas in the U.S.A. Outstanding hiking trails and views even from easy to moderate difficult trails. Plenty of shopping if that is something you enjoy (I don’t), and restaurants. We found quiet out of the way lodging but within walking distance to Hwy 89A.
I hope to return.

We recently went from Flagstaff to Sedona on the scenic 89A highway. Having never been there before we were in awe of the beautiful sights as we got closer to Sedona. The sad part, it was very hard to pull over and enjoy the scenery. There was no signage to warn of a pull off ahead, and when there was a place, the drop off the pavement edge was sometimes more than 6-8 inches. Some of the pull off areas were so rocky, our car scraped bottom as we found the safest way in and out. Parking at the Chapel of the Holy Cross was so inadequate that after 2 tries we just moved on.
Arizona needs to spend their tourism dollars in these areas, as it’s very obvious they haven’t done so in many years.

Head North on the 89A for some great vistas and photo opportunities. We fought some weather but it was still a magnificent way to see some beautiful scenery.

Nice scenic drive through the Sedona area and the city of Sedona itself. Pretty busy through the city, so watch out for other drivers and the roundabouts.

When 179 suddenly throws visitors into the last of those vile round-abouts, drivers have arrived at the junction of 89A and ... welcome to Sedona! Turn to the left and head towards Safeway or turn to the right, and go straight into the mouth of the monster (Uptown). Hopefully, after arriving and/or finding a place to park, time will allow for some thoughtful on-foot exploration.

During our stay, our walks led us up 89A over and over again. Those are views for which the foot soldier is rewarded. WE can stop. And WE did, over and over again. This review attempts to highlight the ups and downs of both directions and there are many (downers as well as uppers).

Walking up 89A on the sidewalk (thank you, city fathers and planners), there were many opportunities to sit at a bench and enjoy cold water while also drinking in views to which mere mortals should not be entitled. Yes, they were that great. My photos attempted to capture that experience.

However, heading down into Uptown Sedona (hotbed of tourism) many changes awaited us. More roundabouts, more changes to parking in Uptown, more dividers in the road to prevent ped/car collisions, and maybe (just maybe) a car-bound person will catch a glimpse of the beauty best enjoyed à pied (via good old footsies). If and when possible, ditch the gas guzzler and go it on foot. Always.

Just past the Uptown Sedona Art Center is a "new" roundabout! Wow, yet another one in Sedona! And there are several more? We are not fans. But this is a decision Sedona made as in: not using signal lights but to inflict infinite more grief via these evil creations. The city is trying to put lipstick on these pigs by introducing artists to devise designs that would make them look like works of art.

Since our pre-pandemic visit, this lovely scenic road is prone to the traffic backups and speeding (another oxymoron) and all manner of aggressive driving we witnessed as pedestrians. Just so you know. It can and does get ugly.

89A is an amazingly beautiful stretch of road to travel. It is even better by foot!

We had a very nice Saturday morning drive on 89A from Sedaona to Flagtaff. The red rocks, the trees, and other sites are very scenic.

We decided to take this scenic hwy on a nice sunny, 70’s day on our way to Walnut canyon national monument. There aren’t many pull offs but just go slow and enjoy the ride when you’re not in a hurry! We passed slide rock state park where some folks were walking on the rocks and wading in the shallow water. I imagine on a very hot day this would be a nice side trip. There are many views of Oak Creek along the way, Bootlegger picnic area ( along side the creek).

Traveling to Sedona from Phoenix (on the 179), it terminates in the traffic circle at the junction with Uptown Sedona (89A). RIght turn to go to Uptown and maybe Flagstaff but turn left to go all the way to the end of town, on the way to Prescott. There is some impressive scenery along the way.

Between Uptown and the end of Sedona on 89A, pass by the post office, Mariposa restaurant, Adobe Jack trailhead, some really great grocery stores (Whole Foods, Basha's, and Safeway), the turn-off to Posse Park, and the really interesting Jameson Memorial Sculpture Park. This is one of our favorite urban-styled walks.

The terminus is pretty much where the Sedona High School and the Diamond timeshare Sedona Summit Resort. The High School has some very nice walking paths around it and so does the area around the Diamond property where the sunset views are amazing.

In between the round-about (179 to 89A) into town and that left turn, the views of the mountains require a stop and look, if not a hike. Traffic speeds are fleet (as in: high-speed) so look for a turn-out or a stop at a shopping center for some views.

Over the years, the Adobe Jack trailhead has matured into a first-class trail loved by mountain biker who politely share the terrain with us two-footed (and no-wheeled) travelers. Take that up to Devil's sinkhole and maybe connect with Jordan Trail to travel back to Uptown, provided that a car isn't involved and, thus, no requirement to return to a specific parking lot. We like to hoof it up 89A and walk the trails back into town.

Scenery in Sedona is the main draw to this piece of regional paradise. Route 89A has no shortage of big payouts in this stretch of landscape panorama.

Did this drive on a Sunday morning headed to Flagstaff. What a blast. It combines Grand Prix driving with fabulous scenery. Take your time and drive this treasure of a road.
