About
Take one of America’s most scenic drives—the 30-mile route from Flagstaff to Sedona—to Oak Creek Canyon. You can get a detailed map from the ranger station before you set off. Watch as towering red cliffs give way to lush forested canyons along the drive. There’s so much to do once you’re there: cool off at the swimming holes, fish for your own meal, hike the popular West Fork trail, ride a jeep or ATV, or hop on a hot air balloon ride. Pick up some Native American crafts at Oak Creek Vista.

- Carol RAbrams, Wisconsin105 contributionsSuch beauty and wonderWe drove through the canyon on highway 89A. The views are so beautiful. We did a stop at Slide Rock National Park for a few hours and it was so amazing. Also stopped at a Dairy Queen in the canyon to cool down (LONG waits just for ice cream). We traveled through the canyon 3 of the 4 days we were staying in Sedona. Just breathtakingVisited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 15 October 2023
- EllieMazeUnited States88 contributionsBeautiful scenery! This was our favorite hike in the Sedona area! Trail followed the creek and you crossed the water 13 times - some much more difficult than others! Parking is very limited so plan accordingly. This is a popular hike and well worth your time.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 21 March 2024
- Rick BRound Rock, Texas1,403 contributionsVery Busy on a Sunday afternoon. This beautiful drive is a must do if in the Flagstaff area. Arizona route 89A heads south out of town and into Oak Creek Canyon to Sedona. The rocks are colorful and there are many really cool formations. There are also some camping and picnicking areas as the road runs through the Coconino National Forest. We also spotted a lot of places to stay and restaurants. In Sedona itself it was extremely busy so we just turned back to FlagstaffVisited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 April 2024

Costruction in downtown Sedona caused us to head north up highway 89A. This is a gorgeous drive through pretty country with lots of curves and places to stop and view the canyon. The only disappointement was that we were not doing it on a motorcycle. Might have to return on 2 wheels.

Too crowded in summer!! Couldn't get into slide rock or other - plus fee areas won't allow dogs.... Thankful where we stayed had private access to the creek. The creek is crystal clear - perfect swimming holes...

Beautiful drive. Unfortunately you will have to experience it with 2,000 of your closest friends. If you go when the weather is good and especially on weekends the place is absolutely packed with people. Slide Rock will have a line of cars waiting for someone to leave so they can enter and the parking lot for the West Fork Trail fills early. If you are a little creative there are plenty of other hikes to try although they can be more challenging. Beautiful scenery.

Previous trips up and down the Oak Creek Canyon were always rushed. On this trip we decided to take our time. Went from the Uptown area heading north until we reached the 7,000 foot look over. Walked around that area and then headed back down the canyon. Great roads that we under construction but very short waits. Stopped at the Dairy Queen and used the bathrooms but did not get any food. Our next stop is where you will see a life size deer made out of chrome car bumpers. We almost missed it but stop and go into the store. It's not your typical tourist trap and the prices for the items were rather expensive but nicely displayed. There was a 90 minute wait to get into the park so that wasn't an option for us. I loved the ride, the traffic was light, and the cooler temps were very pleasant.

After experiencing hikes around Sedona's red rocks parks, Oak Creek Canyon was a pleasant change with its cooling, treed landscape and incredible cliff views. The view and the peacefulness of the area was a relaxing experience. An added highlight was the display of authentic Native American crafts (mostly Navajo) at the Oak Creek Canyon Vista, which I of course had to support by purchasing several jewelry pieces. It was great to meet the Native American artisans in person and listen to their stories about the Navajo Nation and their crafts. We loved it so much we went back again a couple days later.

Oak Creek Canyon provides a wonderful respite from the afternoon heat. The cool shade and cold creek are not to be missed on a trip to Sedona. The cool, calm ambiance provide a nice change from the bold, beaut red rocks.
Do not miss this on your trip to Sedona. I do recommend coming during the week to avoid the crowds of the weekend.

Just a short stop here to look at this unique bridge over Oak Creek Canyon. It was the last obstacle to getting from Flagstaff to Sedona. Deep canyon walls and a unique bridge structure make this well worth the short stop.

A beautiful drive along a stream in a canyon of red rocks. Go early in the morning or late in the day to get the light cutting across the rocks. Be prepared for traffic, especially on weekends.

Absolutely beautiful. Lot of traffic/people. We couldn't do a few things on our list because couldn't find a parking spot! Like shop at Tlaquepaque . . circled around parking lots several times and gave up. Same thing with Chapel of the Holy Cross. Got to see the outside but no spot to park to be able to go inside. This was prob 11 a.m.ish. Better get to places like that right when they open. Hiking in the different parks was a lot of fun, would definitely do that. There were helicopter rides slashed to $20 per person. The driving through the mountains was pretty scary with just a guardrail on one side for a long time and the locals driving real fast right on your tail. But the views are unbelievable everywhere you look. Drove over to Bearizona animal park in Williams which was awesome . . as well as took the great train ride to the Grand Canyon which was an experience in itself. Wonderful trip.

We drove north from Sedona. A prominent bridge (Midgley Bridge) crosses a side canyon. Stopping there, we hiked down (a few hundred feet drop) to the river (Oak Creek). A cool place with lots of sycamores. Driving further, near the Slide Rock park, there are lots of impressive cliffs and rock formations. In another 10 miles, the road took an impressive climb up, with exciting hairpin turns. The top rewards us with a great view down the canyon. There is also a Navajo artifact bazaar set up at the viewpoint.

I had the most amazing experience there. When I looked at the canyon, it was if the ancestors came alive. I walked away for a while to see if it would go away, but I could still see the faces when I returned. It was if they were there to protect the native americans selling the beautiful jewelry. My husband couldn't see it, but I'm more 'sensitive' being on the autism spectrum somewhere. Definitely a surprisingly spiritual experience. Has anyone else reported anything similar?

Is it too cold to hike in November? Hubby and I have a weekend trip mid November. Thanks!
Written 10 November 2019
At the end of September the temperatures at night were getting as low as the low 50s and upper 40s. The water is ice cold year round. If you are hiking in Nov. please be very alert to the weather forcasts, take plenty of water, 1 gal per person minimum, eat well before, take foods with you. Wear layers, keep an eye on the clock to avoid those short days of darkness.

I read and have seen pots about people buying Native American Jewelry. Is this genuine native hand made jewelry they made or something from China. Only reason why I am asking we went to Cherokee N.C. was assured we were buying native American jewelry. Only to find out mass produced in China.

I think there’s a mixture of both...that’s about all I can say. Sorry...good luck!

Looking for recommendations for an interesting driving route from Sedona to Grand Canyon, to include stopping by the trout farm at Oak Creek Canyon. A quick road trip with an adventurous 12 and 14 year old. Not staying overnight. Any suggestions?

Take 89A North through Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon to Rt17 north through Flagstaff, 1ten Rt180 to right on 64 to the S rim of the canyon. If you can't find accommodations Iin the Grand Canyon Village, try Tusayan, several miles south of the canyon.

Hi,
I saw some postings about people swimming in the water.
To get to this 'swimming or playing in the water' area, do we need to 'hike' or walk long distance from public parking lot?
One of my family member has leg problem so he can't walk long distance or hike in rocky place or with many steps.
I'd like to know the path to the water area is hard to get there for disabled(or lightly) people.
Thank you.

My husband and I visited Slide Rock State Park on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. We were there by 10 AM and were able to park in the lot (beware the $35 park entrance fee under certain circumstances). Easy paved walkway leads to the concrete stairs that descend to the boulder- and rock-lined creek bed. I do not consider this easily accessible at all.

There are a couple of motels/inns along 89A highway. There was a resort type of spot there too that looked really nice and had a restaurant. Can’t remember the name of it.

Is visiting Oak Creek Canyon wheelchair accessible?
Written 8 January 2019
There are some areas near the shops along the road that are wheelchair accessible. Most of the waterfront is not.

Is the drive from Sedona to oak creek canyon affected by the recent rains
Written 8 October 2018
Unless they are having flooding, the rain shouldn't hurt the drive.
