About
This state park in Oak Creek Canyon is one of Arizona’s most visited tourist attractions. Apart from the abundant plant and wildlife, Slide Rock State Park is also home to a 43-acre working apple farm, one of the few homesteads preserved in the canyon. Tackle the hiking trails to enjoy great views of sandstone bluffs, explore rustic cabins from the 20th century, and cool off by swooshing down the 80-foot-long natural water slide that the park is named after. If you're planning for a swim, note that temperatures in Oak Creek can drop to near-freezing in winter and spring. – Tripadvisor

- AroogMesa, Arizona363 contributionsBeautiful timeWe visited 2nd weekend of October. It was not packed at all because most people want to come when its scorching hot in the valley. Well I promise you it was warm enough to go now without the crowds. Wether you go in July or October the water is freezing but your body numbs to it and the sun warms you up. Yes a milliom times you must be extra careful with how you walk because its slippery. We had our 6 and 3 year old and we were perfectly fine. We had a beautiful day.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 12 October 2023
- Michelle W1 contributionWorth a visit!Beautiful place! We went with our kids (9 and 10). I felt it was plenty safe as long as you know what you are getting in to. The rocks submerged in the creek are VERY slippery, which is indicated on the website. The only other negative was how cold the water was, maybe it’s because we were there in October but I read the water rarely gets above 55 degrees ever. Other than that, I could have spent an entire day there hiking and looking at the scenery. My kids enjoyed the slides. They look a bit more dangerous than they are. There weren’t any sharp edges or rough spots to get injured on. The slides were slippery and smooth enough that you just glide right through. It was beautiful!!!Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 13 October 2023
- Carol RAbrams, Wisconsin105 contributionsWorth the stop and the views are amazingWe stopped at the Slide Rock national park on a whim and so glad we did. The cost to get in the park was $25. Once there you walk the trails and head towards the water along the granite banks. The views are so amazing. The water was extremely cold for October but we had fun watching people just jump off the cliffs or slide down the rocks in the natural spring. My husband and son did walk as far as they could along the waterway. I was just sitting and enjoying watching the people in the water. We ended being here for several hours. Highly recommend.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 15 October 2023
- IndieBajanNew York City, New York130 contributionsEnjoy with caution! The park charges a $10 fee for cars and SUVs with 4 ppl and an additional $5 per each additional person. Special rates apply to seniors, children, and military personnel. Bring snacks and water if you are planning to stay a while because depending on the time of year you're traveling the little stores at the entrance of the park may/may not be open. PLEASE, wear water shoes with good grip if you are planning on going into the water because the algae make the area EXTREMELY slippery. The water temp can range from freezing cold to warm and toasty depending on the season you visit so be mindful of this. There are bathrooms located at the entrance of the park and in the park next to the river, which is great so you do not have to go far if needed. Most ppl walk to the left after coming down the stairs but you can also walk right to get some good pics of the bridge. Be careful because some of the rocks are jagged so carefully look before placing your foot down. Overall the scenery is breathtakingly beautiful with great photo opportunities. I would plan on spending at least 2-3 hours to swim and explore the area.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 25 November 2023
- PhlegmMasterPhoenix, Arizona4,741 contributionsPeaceful & Gorgeous! (when not packed as it is in the summer time)My brothers and I came here during a nice day in late November. Entrance Fee in November thru February is $10/car with up to 4 adults ($5 for additional adults). $20 - $30 the rest of the year. There was only a handful of people walking about. The water is too frigid this time of the year to go swimming. We just hiked along Oak Creek scrambling over rocks and boulders, enjoying the beauty and serenity of the area.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 27 December 2023
- Jai S53 contributionsFun in the waterShort hike to the water. Beautiful place where rocks meet water. Recommend going earlier in day. Should allot at least 2 hours. Water is clear but very cold in February. Practice caution as there are no barricades at the top of the trail overlooking the creek and can be dangerous if little ones wonder from the viewing bench. Overall a must see and different than all the red rock hikes.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 20 February 2024
- Th3HappyTravelerReynoldsburg, Ohio311 contributionsBeautiful setting even if you don’t swim!Stunning setting as Oak Creek carves its way over the flat red rocks with some small rapids that folks use to cool off on hot days. We visited in March so water was too cold for that. But enjoyed the Pendley Homestead Trail, Clifftop Trail and the lower Creekside path. Admission was $20 per car in March but is higher on weekends/peak season. The America the Beautiful pass is not accepted here. Nice bathrooms and even a small snack/ice cream/market which opens in warmer weather.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 March 2024

- Marianne R10 contributionsSuch a beautiful, fun area!!What a fun day we had here!! It was a blast sliding down the rock crevices! The water was cold but when I got in quickly and began sliding, it didn't bother me. It was great to watch other people slide down the crevices too. One word of caution though......change into your bathing suit at one of the bathrooms before going down to the rock area because the bathroom there is really disgusting!Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 2 June 2024

The park is open at full admission price but social distancing means fewer cars are allowed in. On a Monday, they closed at 9 am as they’d reached quota. The store is closed but outdoor exhibits are open. Restrooms also were open. Bring your cooler, pop up tent, towels, and dogs on leashes. No hiking other than a short trail to an overlook. The closest you’ll get to a “beach” in Northern Arizona!

Slide Rock has been on my list of places to visit for years. I had read many reviews saying it’s hard to get a parking spot so we went early ish around 11am on a weekday and had no problem getting in. By the time we left at 1pm there was a line but a steady stream of people were leaving.
The walk to the river isn’t super far and it’s pretty flat with a breathtaking view of the mountains. There’s a small gift shop and plenty of decently clean restrooms. One thing to note is they use recycled rain water in the toilets which is bright orange so you’ll think it’s dirty when it’s actually clean.
Once you get near the water the walk gets way more challenging. It’s very uneven and slippery even on the dry stones. You’ll end up scrambling to get across areas. If you have any mobility or balance problems I’d avoid this place. It’s a must to wear appropriate shoes with good grip. I saw people only wearing flip flops which is a recipe for disaster. Even wearing water shoes you often almost slip on the rocks. In the water is even more slippery, especially on the rocks barley covered in algae.
The slide area was pretty busy but not unbearable. There are two main slides. One is more shallow / flat right as you enter and is the busiest part. It’s full of unsupervised small children who’ll bash into you when sliding. The other is further into the park and is much faster / deeper. People actually line up to go down the slide unlike in the first area. It’s also more quite as you’re further from the car park. You’ll still get the odd idiot with kids jumping the line and bashing into you but you’d get that at any water park.
It’s super fun to slide but you’ll end up very bashed up. It’s normal to end up getting stuck at a few points but you can push yourself along. The people who brought inflatable rings had a smoother ride as it stops you slamminh into the rocks.
As countless people have mentioned the water is very cold but you get used to it quickly. I’d highly recommend wearing a long sleeve swim shirt because it helps with the cold and stops you getting sunburnt. All the water is super clear but does smell a bit sour like pee.
All in all, I’d highly recommend a visit to Slide Rock. It’s not the best place for young children but anyone above 5 will have a great time.

June is not the best time since the water level is lower for this but there is enough to allow the kids to have a fun time going down the slides a little at a time. This park is a State park so there is a fee to get in and the parking lot is large so a lot of people can be in the area all at once. We were there on a Wednesday so the crowds weren't as bad as on the weekends.

We stopped here after some other hiking trails were full. Immediately we were glad we stopped. The rock formations were beautiful and the water running through was crystal clear. I could imagine it gets really busy in the summer with people swimming but it was perfect in November. Would recommend it to everyone.

Entrance fee today was $30 per car (up to 4 people only) which was higher than expected based on previous reviews. For a once in a lifetime experience I guess it was worth it. The swimming closes at 5 but really it's 4:50 when they start shooing people out. Their goal is have the swimming place cleared out by 5 (despite the fact that the park closes at 6). It was 4:51 and the ranger was telling people about to jump off the cliff to walk down despite the fact that one last jump would not have gotten them out of the area any slower. If this happens to you just ignore him and jump.
For the price I suggest spending several hours there. Bring a picnic lunch and make at least a 1/2 day of it. We only had two hours -- one hour in the water and another hour afterwards when we finally had time to eat the "lunch" we had brought.

I’ve pretty much grown up going to Slide Rock, and have the joy of bringing my kids there now. The things to be aware of are:
1) the fee to park
*one year it was full to capacity, so I parked on the main road like everyone else. Well we ALL got tickets. Be advised.
2) bring towels because everyone is going to get wet! A big beach blanket and chairs is also nice if you are up for carrying them a ways from your car
3) wear sturdy beach shoes
*the rocks on the actual slide are covered in algae. This is how you are propelled down. However, walk around barefoot and risk a hefty slip on rocks. I hate to see kids get hurt. Cover your feet!
*you can also hike up the sides of Slide Rock to get an aerial view. Hiking shoes or solid tennis shoes are ok
4) wear your least favorite cut offs because the algae stains. You can wear a bathing suit, but plan on it getting trashed if you intend on sliding. The rocks will pill them up
5) Take your little ones to the restroom BEFORE you plant yourself. The walk back there can be pretty long
6) The closest hotel is the Oak Creek Terrace *really affordable place that has rooms/cabins/bungalows
with large jacuzzis. Right on the creek. Literally 5 minutes from Slide Rock. They have been renovating and new rooms are more modern. If you’re going 5 star, stay at L’Auberge in downtown Sedona. Excellent!
7)The closest places to get food are Dairy Queen and the Indian Garden
*awesome food there with patio dining. They offer a nice selection of wine and cheeses too if you’re planning a romantic picnic. The parking lot usually has Indian vendors selling silver and turquoise jewelry.
8) plan your travels accordingly
*there is one road in and one road out
That means leaving in the afternoon on a three day weekend is going to take close to an hour to get back into downtown Sedona Beat the crowds. It’s worth it
Slide Rock is really amazing. Kids have a blast. I love watching foreigners experiencing this for the first time. It’s good for a few laughs. People always underestimate how slippery it is. Once they get their bearings they are the ones cliff diving an hour later lol.
If you go prepared you will have a ball! Don’t forget sunblock!

$20 for parking and that is the only fee you are going to have to pay. About 15 minutes from Sedona, the scenic view to slide rock it's a treat of it's own. Pay attention though because it is a one way highway with plenty of hikers. Depending on what time you get there, you may have to wait due to the parking lot being full. We had to wait approximately 45 minutes. And there is no phone service. So... get to talking with your family or friends. The park has a small shop with all the necessities, for example: you can buy water shoes ($15), snacks, food, umbrellas, souvenirs, shirts, ice cream, and much more. They have lockers which you can rent in order to safeguard items you don't want to take with you. All we took was two backpacks with snacks and towels. The actual walk to the creek is about 15 minutes. Enjoy the walk because it has great view. The massive red rock in the distance is breathtaking. You will go down some steps that will lead you to the creek. Once at the bottom you can pick a spot to settle. BE AWARE. The rocks in the water are very very slippery. The water is cold..but once you acclimate, you will be fine. Peaceful, and enjoyable. Not very packed. Plenty of room of everyone. I highly recommend it. Slide Rock State Park is a very popular attraction, so plan to arrive early if you would like to avoid large crowds. There are lots of places to spread a blanket and park a cooler with drinks and snacks or a picnic lunch. We were traveling with a 5 year old and found a nice shady spot with shallow water where he could play safely we also had our teen daughter who enjoyed the thrill of jumping off the high rocks and into the deep pool of clear cool water. We enjoyed watching, but preferred to swim around in the moderately deep pools. At Slide Ro k you really do have a choice in the depths and type of water play you want to pursue. We spent most of a day here and saw a lot of folks come and go. If you’re going to pay the admission fee you might as well stay long enough to make it worth your while.
If you aren’t into bringing your own food there is a little store that sells snacks and drinks and some souvenir items. The park includes a large picnic area with tables too. There were some historical features and information telling the story of this place which was interesting to look at, but my family was most excited about getting to the water, so I didn’t spend much time reading the interpretive signs.
Overall it’s a great place to come on a hot summer day and enjoy the water or relax in the shade.

Stunning setting as Oak Creek carves its way over the flat red rocks with some small rapids that folks use to cool off on hot days. We visited in March so water was too cold for that. But enjoyed the Pendley Homestead Trail, Clifftop Trail and the lower Creekside path. Admission was $20 per car in March but is higher on weekends/peak season. The America the Beautiful pass is not accepted here. Nice bathrooms and even a small snack/ice cream/market which opens in warmer weather.

We had no idea that you couldn’t park on the street and walk to the park. You must enter with a vehicle and pay the $20. So we added a 2 mile walk to our journey. Once inside we walked deep into the park. Lots of families with small children . The rocks are VERY slippery so I do recommend water shoes. The natural slide is awesome and people of all ages were joining in.

Hey! We are planning a trip in may to slide rock park, fossil creek and a couple other park in the area of Sedona. My one son is in 4th grade and we have a 4th grade pass to get into any national park for free. I'm a little confused on what this covers, entry and parking? or is it just entry? do we still have to buy permits for the park? If anyone has any information it would be helpful.
Thank You!

Hello. If you're talking about a pass such as the "America the Beautiful" pass, that is a National Park pass, and will not admit entry into this park; Slide Rock is a State park.
Sorry about that.

Hi! I am planning to visit next weekend form CA. ANY advice would be great! I understand it might be full since it is the weekend before 4th Of July, any advice? Can I reserve in advance? I am just going for the day to redock, it looks so fun, especially for the kids! Any area I should go? What should I brings? Thanks!
Written 22 June 2023
You're right! It will be very busy!! Arrive early and be patient. Slide Rock opens at 8. They don't accept reservations. Attendance is limited by the size of the parking lot so get there as early as possible. Pack as if you are going to the beach but you do need to walk about .5 mile to get to the water and that includes stairs. There's a picnic area near the parking if you bring lunch.
Another fun spot the kids can get in the water is Crescent Moon Picnic Site at Red Rock Crossing. Everything I said about Slide Rock also applies there.
Have fun!!

Bringing my family, my 4 year old doesn't know how to swim yet but it comfortable in the water with a puddle jumper. Will that work for this area?
Written 9 September 2022
Yes there are shallow areas for toddlers
Written 16 July 2023
The water is pretty cold so if you have a fresh piercing, know that the metal can conduct temperature so it might be uncomfortable depending on where the piercing is. Also, it is typically recommended you not submerge a new piercing in water for a while (ask your piercer for specific instructions) and at the very least, I would make sure to clean it very well before and after. Also, there is a risk of bumping into the rocky sides as you go down - nothing dramatically painful but should you give your cut or piercing a good whack, it might really hurt! So your mileage may vary but take good care of all open wounds, no matter what you're doing!

How deep is the water? Planning to go tomorrow.. just scared it may be deep
Written 28 July 2021
not too deep in 90% of the area. there is one spot about 5' x 10' that some people jump into from a high rock. that area is about 15' deep. otherwise, little kids and babies playing everywhere.
