Glad we visited.

We were rockhounding across the south west and visited this area. The fire agate and other interesting agates were fun to find. We really enjoyed our time and will return again.

We went looking for the elusive Fire Opal. We found none, however we found many rocks that we plan to work with. This area is rocky (imagine that!) what I mean is that you will be walking around on ground AND 3-8 inch diameter rocks. Plan ahead with good shoes if possible. I would also look more in the washes,... More

Lots of fire agates lying around all over the area here at the Black Hills Rockhound Area! We gathered some, had a picnic and enjoyed the beautiful black rock mountains.

This is a well kept area for rockhounding. The area is well marked, the road pretty dependable and there is room to camp if you wish (although no facilities or power). You can always find some fire agate. It takes time to find good fire, but the fun is in the search and no one need go away empty handed.... More

We just spent a most pleasant night camping in our travel trailer FREE on BLM public land at the Black Hills Rockhound Area. We gathered fire agates in the daytime and photographed beautiful wild flowers as we gazed off into the west at Mt. Graham capped with snow. At night we were the only people in the area parked on... Great scenery in a quiet setting, a rock hound delight and terrific description of CCC constructions. Roads somewhat rough but no high tolerance vehicle needed.

Went here with my husband who was looking for fire agates, thought I would be bored but there were lots of interesting rocks all over the place. Saw some cattle walking around and enjoyed the pretty scenery. We drove in with a Chevy Traverse (without too much ground clearance) and just drove slowly as some of the gravel roads are... More

Seriously. It is a dozen or more miles outside of Safford, not in the heart of "downtown". It is a pretty place, lots of stones sitting on the ground - mostly valueless; fire agates are there too, but it is best to dig for them. Minimal facilities, a little hard to fine, but a pleasant way to spend an hour... More

good views, not a lot of other folks in the area. The end of the drive by Gila River bridge was the prettiest, good place for a picnic.

The Black Hills Rockhound Area is pretty easy to find. It is a great place to visit and experience a little of the great outdoors. The gravel/dirt road near MP141 on Route 91 is easy to find. It is a little rough, but easy to manage. There are a lot of "pretty rocks" to collect right on the surface. If... More
