- Lead2829North Lawrence, Ohio348 contributionsDon’t Nix the Phoenix ZooVery large zoo with a ton of animals to see. We went on Veterans Day and everyone in Phoenix was there. Even with all the people it still was only really crowded in certain areas. Parking was a nightmare, but I doubt it’s bad during a normal day. Rhinos were the favoriteVisited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 18 November 2023
- JPSD_12Milwaukee, Wisconsin19 contributionsEnjoyable for an 8 year old, disappointing for adultsThis was something to do to spend time with an 8 year old on a lovely AZ day. She enjoyed the zoo. But from an adult viewpoint, it was expensive, starting with the admission fee which did not include any extras like the Safari Cruiser camel rides, caraseul. Food was the usual outrageous. We requested a paper map and we’re referred to the QR code and told there were lots of signage in the park (there definitely were to try selling membership). However, the elephant (yes, singular) did not merit a sign. When we did find him/her, it was unavailable for an hour as it was receiving a shower. There was v little movement among the animals. We did get closeup to the rhino, baboon and giraffe. The zoo is definitely not comparable to others in cities much smaller in size. No penguins, polar bears, hippos. Phoenix Zoo has a ways to go!Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 22 November 2023
- aschoonoDeWitt, Michigan736 contributionsGreat ZooWe came to the Phoenix Zoo with family and a wide variety of ages of kids. We all had a blast at the zoo. It is a large zoo and there are tons of animals. We were there for a few hours and didn’t even see the entire zoo. The kids favorite part was the spider monkeys. You get to walk right into the exhibit. The monkeys were very active. The zoo was busy when we were there but you didn’t notice it with it being so big. The only downside is the price. It was expensive. There were also many things you had to pay extra for. Food was also expensive so we waited and ate when we left.Visited January 2023Travelled with familyWritten 5 December 2023
- BrssjunkTucson, Arizona1,295 contributionsDisappointing for a major city zoo but construction underwayWe were actually in Phoenix in June of 2022, but the application doesn't allow me to set it that far back. For a zoo in a major city, this was really disappointing. Many of the areas were closed off, and viewing for the animals was not great. Once they finish all the renovations that were in progress it may be pretty good.Visited June 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 21 December 2023
- Thomas H4 contributions7.00/10.00Fun, but very expensive gift shop. Don’t suggest buying anything here. Lots of animals and great for little children. There’s a carousel for little kids and a playground being built on premises. Some cages are an incredibly small for there animals, some are bigger though. Not a great environment for older kids.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 5 February 2024
- TravelingBum10United States7,159 contributionsBeautiful locationThis zoo is in a beautiful location. It has several different ponds in the surrounding areas. The zoo itself is not very big. Entrance is about $40 for adults and $30 for children 3 and up. Once you’re inside. They nickel and dime you for everything else. I paid $6 a person for the ride around the park. It was pretty useless as they don’t stop to let you see the animals. If you’re not paying attention you miss it. It was $5 a person to pet the stingrays and more if you want to feed them. $3 a kid for the carousel. $10 for a soda and chips. By the time I left I had spent over $100 easy and didn’t really see many animals.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 16 February 2024
- IndianaTravelmomSouth Bend, Indiana339 contributionsPleasant zoo- not a destinationWe have visited many zoos. This is a solid regional zoo experience. Animals seem well cared for and typical conservation messaging. However there aren’t a huge variety of animals and I wouldn’t consider it a destination zoo as I would several other big city zoos. Nonetheless it was a nice enough way to spend 3 or 4 hours outsideVisited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 5 March 2024
- MelvinPusfingerTemecula, California701 contributionsGreat experience for the familyThis is not one of the top ranked zoos in the United States. Not quite in the same league as the San Diego zoo. Nevertheless, if you are looking for a very enjoyable day for the family, this is a great place to go for a family. Children younger than 15 will particularly enjoy it. An adult ticket cost $38 and a child is $28. So a family of five could run to approximately $170. Nevertheless, this is an all day activity and significantly cheaper than Disneyland. And you will get a great deal of exercise walking around the zoo. This is a very spacious zoo and you get to cover a great deal of territory. They was a pretty good assortment of animals here. Three lions, a leopard, at least one elephant, and plenty of monkeys. There was also a rhino and camels. Speaking of camels, the camel ride is very popular. Eight dollars per person but the kids will really enjoy it. There is a shut to take you around the zoo, but that will cost you extra. At least eight dollars. Free parking are not too far from the entrance. The gift shop is OK but nothing to write home about. All in all a very enjoyable experience. A very good family activity if you live in or are visiting Phoenix or nearby, Scottsdale.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 1 April 2024
- Linda C19 contributionsgreat zooSuch a great zoo to explore while in Phoenix. We had breakfast at one of the onsite restaurants and it was reasonably priced and delicious. All the animals were out and active which was great to see. All of the water mists throughout the zoo during the hot summer days were a definite bonus. Definitely be ready to do a lot of walking as we didn't want to miss anything and ended up doubling back to see our favorite animals.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 22 August 2024

My two older sons and grandson attended Phoenix Zoo on Sunday, February 21, 2021. We arrived at 11:30am, the temperature was about 70, and it was already getting crowded. If it wasn't for the fact that the $75.00 entry fee supports the animals, I would ask for a refund. We saw 1 tiger lying down, 1 bear sleeping, 2 rhinoceros, three giraffes and some monkeys swinging off in the distance. Other than birds, all the other animals were out of sight and it appears that in many cases there was just 1 of each kind of animal. As we walked (and walked), I heard numerous people and children ask where all the animals were. The way the zoo is laid out, even the animals that were out were hard to find and see. Comparatively, Brookfield Zoo in Chicago and the San Diego Zoo have pens which provide for easier viewing even when the animals are sleeping. It was wasted time and money and very disappointing.

We were not thrilled with our visit to the Phoenix Zoo. Upon arriving on a weekday, we found the parking lot very full. No ADA parking was available. Tickets were costly for admission and while most zoos and museums offer a person with a significant mobility impairment a complimentary pass for their caregiver who is necessary for them to access the space, we were told that the Phoenix Zoo only provides a complimentary caregiver pass to guests who have zoo memberships. Considering the size of any zoo and the terrain changing from paved to dirt and many hills to navigate it is not something a wheelchair dependent person is likely able to do without bringing someone to assist them.
Many of the exhibits had obstructed views for our family member who uses a wheelchair.
ADA issues aside, it was an okay zoo with a lot of animals that were up and about while we were there. They did seem to have a Shoe Bill Stork but it was really far away and not in an area where guests could view it closer.

Hi mostlywheels, at the Phoenix Zoo we do offer a complimentary pass for aides, attendants and interpreters of guests with disabilities, not just for those who are members. We’d love to connect with you if you can email us at communications@phoenixzoo.org.

Seemed like more of a money grab than anything...as soon as you pay for your entrance tickets and get in the door, all the little things cost extra. Many exhibits were closed or animals were “under medical observation.” We took a long walk to the petting zoo area only to find out that it’s closed due to COVID precautions -as are all the playground areas- but it’s not apparent on signage. Have definitely been to better zoos; not very impressed with this one.

Zoolights Rule!

A magical place at night! You won't see many animals unless you bring a flashlight, but you'll see plenty of lights and lighted animal sculptures made of fabric.
Don't miss the Music In Motion show around the lake. Check with zoo staff for times.
Not many choices for food or drink as there are during daylight hours, but the gift shop is always open and you exit through it.
Zoolights is only one of the special programs offered at the Phoenix Zoo.
Zoolights begin in late November and lasts through mid-January. If you buy your tickets ahead online, you'll save $1/ticket.
Be sure to dress warmly as the desert can cool down quickly when the sun disappears.
This is an edited version of my review. My original review included the online address for the Phoenix Zoo for further info, but Trip Advisor considered that "advertising" and required me to remove the URL.

I am a zoo lover, so was very much looking forward to visiting here while we were in Phoenix. The fact that it cost $25 to get in, made us think it would be better than other, cheaper ones we have visited, but we were disappointed. The layout didn’t seem to flow, and several animals were difficult to get a close look at. I am not sure I would recommend this, especially if families have to pay that amount for multiple kids.

We each bought the biggest entry package we could, because it included interactions with animals. I was terrified to pet the sting rays but they ended up being like eager puppies! I swear they have personalities. I rode the camel which was amazing, and my family back home are so jealous. I wish it including feeding the giraffe (extra $6) but I saw they had a huge line of people paying the extra to do it. We were there for probably 7 hours. Fantastic experience.

Travelled with myself, my wife, and my daughter. While decent in size, I found the layout poorly designed. We walked a number of loops and circles and ended up missing a big section of the zoo. They have a couple of exhibits that you don’t see everywhere, but the majority you can find almost anywhere. One thing we look for is information on conservation or where the animals came from. There’s very little of that at the Phoenix Zoo. I was also disappointed that there were a number of activities that cost extra once you are inside. If you rarely go to zoos, it’s probably worth it. If you frequent zoos, you can skip it.

This is probably the WORSE ZOO I've ever been to in 60 years of going to zoos. You pay $160 to get in the door and then they try to charge you for everything you do once your inside. This wouldn't be so bad If they actually had something to see. The exhibits, if they're open usually just have one haggard animal to see that look like their on their last legs! You probably would see more animals at a pet store! Save your money, go to the McCormick Train Park which is much better!

This zoo was better than expected. My family really enjoyed the animals. Lots of variety of species and animal types. Easy to get around and see everything. Big parking lot. The price was on the high end. The tram/bus ride around the inside of the park was pricey. Many restaurants and food options. I would go back.

As an older couple who's adventures together includes zoos, this was a good destination. We arrived in the early afternoon and were concerned we wouldn't get in due to COVID limitations, but we had no problems. Although maps were availble via smartphone or by display boards, it still eould have been nice to have a paper one available. I get it as a cost savings factor, butcell phone screens ate hard to see in bright sunlight. Other than that, the areas were well marked with signs. The habitats were enjoyable especially the big horn sheep and oryx. The environment was clean and the animals were our even on a hot aftermoon. Great job keepers! The foliage and fauna were just beautiful. Great jobs grounds crew! Bonus pleasure were the many animal statues in bronze throughout the park. Kudos to the artists and donars. If i could make one suggestion that would be to have more food and beverage huts. Lines were long at every concession stand on an 89° day.

If you are eligible for food stamps and have an EBT card you can get in for under $5. I think you can bring 3 people in with you. A senior yearly pass is a great deal also.
