- GoAlong2Seattle, Washington893 contributionsA bit of history in a pleasant square. This square includes several old homes and buildings that were preserved as the modern downtown built up next to it. Tours of the Victorian house and the cottages are available during the day. The plaza also hosts a South American restaurant and a pizza restaurant as well as the science museum. There is a free audio tour online that tells you about the buildings and history of the square. It’s with a stop if you are in the area.Visited October 2023Travelled on businessWritten 24 October 2023
- Susan OGranger, Indiana22 contributionsFriendly and well informed guides offer enjoyable toursEnjoyed both the tour of the Rosson House and the tour of the Square. In the house, Amal reviewed the history of the families who lived there and how the house has changed over the years. It is stunning to look at inside and well preserved. Sarah guided us through the tour of the Square and explained the history of the region and the archaeological digs that took place under the parking garage. Both of the guides were smart, well informed, friendly and cheerful. I learned and lot and really enjoyed chatting with them.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 18 December 2023

Didn't have time for official tour of the museum. I was looking for a historical area in this big city and I got it! Near university area. Heritage Square Phoenix is one of those unique city areas that keeps its history alive.
It is amazing how much is being done by the Heritage Square Foundation to preserve the historic buildings and get the tourists and general public acquainted with the history of Phoenix.
Upon entrance, I found the Heritage Square Visitor Center (a former Carriage House) to be of great help to visitors - besides educated and friendly working staff who welcome you in, they offer an excellent info display, free handouts, visitors guides and maps of Heritage Square Phoenix, - all this is so informative and helpful when you walk around the area.
Of course, on the premises of Heritage Square there's a very famous, historic Rosson House Museum that offers tours, the Teeter Carriage House (now it is one of the popular Royal Coffee Bars in the area), another old, but modernised structure is Baird Machine Shop (today it is a Pizzeria Bianco), and a gorgeous, open-air Lath House Pavilion that was completed in 1980. Nearby, there's a prominent Arizona Science Center that runs many programs in educating children.
I found Heritage Square Phoenix fascinating, it has the spirit of the past and it lives in the present; I think of it now as of an inseparable and an important part of the downtown area of the city. I am convinced, Heritage Square Phoenix definitely has a great future.

Heritage Square Park is the oldest residential block of Phoenix still remaining in tact. You can visit of the houses as it is turned to a museum (around $9 entrance fee) as well as other houses which do some artisan work. The square has the famous Bianco pizzeria, which has been ranked the best in the country by a certain magazine. There are activities going on often there, like a classic and vintage car show in the coming days, etc. Heritage Square, besides the history, is very nice place to relax, have a pizza, and see world pass by, especially on a Saturday and Sunday morning and midday where the Arizona Science Center next door is full of people. Heritage Square should be part of tour of Phoenix that one should do, since things are so close to each other. I highly recommend to do a free tour with Angelica of DTPHX (dtphx.org) of Phoenix. Some other highlights next to Heritage Square are Wells Fargo Museum (free), Police Museum (free), San Marcos and Western Ho Hotel, Orpheum Theater, etc. There are around this area the oldest hotel in Phoenix still in use, the old train station, the oldest Phoenix house, etc.

On a recent trip to the Phoenix Area, I came downtown for Mass at St Mary's Basilica (which, on a side note, is beautiful). On my way there, I noticed signs for Historic Heritage Square and decided to check it out since I love history. I definitely could have skipped this attraction.
Heritage Square is very small and there is nothing special to see except for a few old brick buildings that have been preserved. Also, I was there on a Sunday and pretty much everything was closed. There was a tour being offered of one historic house, but it really didn't look all that interesting, so I decided to pass.
I'll admit that I have been to every state in the Lower 48, so maybe my expectations are high for historical sites. However, I wasn't expecting Philadelphia's Elfreth's Alley or the Beacon Hill in Boston. I just figured there would be something cool to see if the city spent time putting up all these signs.
I love the Phoenix area, but there aren't a lot of old historical buildings worth visiting. If you want to see real historical buildings, go visit Tombstone or Bisbee south of Tucson.

If you happen to be downtown, you can spend a little time walking around Heritage Square. You may find a touch of yesteryear here, but most of the park has been taken over by private businesses (mostly restaurants) and museum space (Science museum primarily). It's an adequate diversion (possible dining) before a Dbacks or Suns game in the area.

A Victorian house from the original town of Phoenix, and a handful of buildings from 1900...some have been made into restaurants or bars....nothing spectacular, but it is all they've got. Across the street is Arizona State University and behind it is the Science Museum. Parking garage will let you park free for one hour if you pay to get a tour of the Victorian house or eat in a restaurant.

A fun place to go back in time right in the heart of Phoenix! I have been coming here ever since I was little, and am now enjoying bringing my little ones here! It is great to see a prairie style house and be able to walk around inside to see how they would have lived back then! Every summer they have hands on "Prairie Days" the kids can participate in, and if you are able to take advantage of it I would highly recommend that you do!
You can pack a picnic lunch to eat in the common grounds or take a chance with the many eateries in the area. In my experience, the eateries in the immediate vicinity have been terrible! Terrible food. Terrible service. And expensive to boot! If you can head over across the street to the mall area there is a great Spanish food restaurant as well as a pizza place, and I think even a Subway. All of which are a little less frou frou and more normal and down to earth.
I honestly do not recommend this place for the dead of summer. Its hot and miserable, but definitely go any time from September through May.

City should invest more but won't....too bad, since we are of pioneer stock, we have plenty stories of greatness, heroics, history, western adventure and facts....city should invest in who we are as a people and expound more....not less because they subscribe to ugly political correctness

I'll pass - no thanks. I love history and visiting historical places, but it was closed and when I tried to park just to walk around I couldn't find a spot.

You have Heritage Square Garage, Phoenix Convention Center, East Garage. These are either across the street or same block as the house.
