Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The track was a dead end so after talking to some locals at the waterfall we hired a local guide. After a 2 hour hike through the jungle with the guide bush wacking we realised he had no idea where it was. So 4 hours later we found civilisation again. I actually really enjoyed the forest walk it was such a unique experience and the guide even scaled a coconut tree for us but it was a shame we couldn't find the mound

I followed the basic instructions to get there, but I could find only the beginning of the path. After the first creek the path just disappear into a thick intimidating forest. The path is totally overgrown. It totally doesn't exists anymore, I was insistent in find something but was useless. The people who live next to the entrance surrounding was not helpful either. I'm pretty sure that I'd love to visit the ancient structure. It's a bit sad to see how abandoned (and dangerous) the path is now, due the importance of this archeological site.

Understanding the significance of this place is what draw me to it. Unfortunately there was no one there when we went to help guide us around the place. For anyone who didn't know anything about it, it would be hard to see why they should pay any money to see this place at all.

Both the trek through the jungle to the Pulemelei Ancient Mound and the Mound itself were totally unforgettable experiences. The view was incredible and the history of the place was just fascinating. I would definitely recommend, but consider having a local guide as the trek was long, difficult and it would have been really easy to get lost.

My family live next to the property the mound is on and my father grew up here as a kid. Despite that - the jungle has completely swallowed the mound and it it still took two day to find. My cousin took us on the second day as we got lost on the first day, but we had to cut our way through the jungle, walk through streams, and climb boulders to get there. Plus we took guns in the case of wild pigs. Challenging trek but amazing experience.

We have visited this site before and thought we'd try again - sadly the access is completely overgrown and it is presently inaccessible - hopefully someone will do something about this soon!

Pretty cool that we had these ancient mounds in Samoa but I asked my mum (I'm half Samoan) to ask a local lady living there what she knew about the history or any legends of this place and she didn't know anything. I think there might've been a little plaque but I wanted to know more and it's sad some of these stories die with our elders.

I wish that I'd read the previous reviews before searching in vain for Pulemelei. My Organic Maps showed a path and it looked to be within 150m after some bush bashing, but we came across a man and his cows who said it was not in that area. His directions gave us new hope but when we came across another man on the other side of the river, he pointed back to the other side and said it was very far. We gave up and went to the blow holes instead!
