Located on the eastern edge of Tierra del Fuego, Cape San Pablo is an isolated mountain on the Atlantic coast that bisects two bays: the eponymous San Pablo and a shallower Quemada. Access is found east off of national road 3 and through a winding 30km road and several estancias. I visited here courtesy of Tierra Tours (see separate review) after my guide was kind enough to make some minor adjustments to my schedule. As the location is quite remote there is no entry fee or even organized tour infrastructure here, just the scenery and a few other tourists. There are essentially two main parts to a visit here: visiting the top of the peak and then the Desdemona (ship wreck) below. The former can be walked up or, as I found out, you can drive about 80% of the way and then disembark on foot for the remaining five minute walk. We chose the automotive method while hauling along some empanadas and a bottle of wine for lunch. The peak is cold and blustery but allows superb views over the ocean and surrounding countryside. After spending maybe 30 minutes on top we descended to the Desdemona, a cargo ship that ran aground on September 9, 1985 and washed up to shore. There was surprisingly little structural damage to the hull, and although we visited before low tide and were unable to climb inside, we were able to walk around the ship in its entirety. Bags of concrete were still visible in the hold and the name of the ship viewable on the hull. We spent a total of probably two hours on location. This was a superb visit and one of the lasting memories of my week in Tierra del Fuego for two main reasons. First, after seeing and reading about shipwrecks and unforgiving Mother Nature of the region in museums, I got to experience these first hand. Yeah, the winds were blustery and freezing on the mountain but grumbling over that’s like going to Manhattan and complaining about the crowds or visiting Singapore and whining about the humidity. Second, the area was completely devoid of the (albeit necessary) revenue generating tourist infrastructure found in Ushuaia proper; there are no Desdemona magnets or audio guides. As much as I appreciated the seemingly infinite number and variety of trinkets and souvenirs in Ushuaia proper, their absence here was refreshing.
