Iconic Tierra del Fuego: windswept lighthouse and a desolate ship wreck.
5.0 of 5 bubblesJan 2019
Located on the eastern edge of Tierra del Fuego, Cape San Pablo is an isolated mountain on the Atlantic coast that bisects two bays: the eponymous San Pablo and a shallower Quemada. Access is found east off of national road 3 and through a winding 30km road and several estancias. I visited here courtesy of Tierra Tours (see separate review) after my guide was kind enough to make some minor adjustments to my schedule. As the location is quite remote there is no entry fee or even organized tour infrastructure here, just the scenery and a few other tourists. There are essentially two main parts to a visit here: visiting the top of the peak and then the Desdemona (ship wreck) below. The former can be walked up or, as I found out, you can drive about 80% of the way and then disembark on foot for the remaining five minute walk. We chose the automotive method while hauling along some empanadas and a bottle of wine for lunch. The peak is cold and blustery but allows superb views over the ocean and surrounding countryside. After spending maybe 30 minutes on top we descended to the Desdemona, a cargo ship that ran aground on September 9, 1985 and washed up to shore. There was surprisingly little structural damage to the hull, and although we visited before low tide and were unable to climb inside, we were able to walk around the ship in its entirety. Bags of concrete were still visible in the hold and the name of the ship viewable on the hull. We spent a total of probably two hours on location. This was a superb visit and one of the lasting memories of my week in Tierra del Fuego for two main reasons. First, after seeing and reading about shipwrecks and unforgiving Mother Nature of the region in museums, I got to experience these first hand. Yeah, the winds were blustery and freezing on the mountain but grumbling over that’s like going to Manhattan and complaining about the crowds or visiting Singapore and whining about the humidity. Second, the area was completely devoid of the (albeit necessary) revenue generating tourist infrastructure found in Ushuaia proper; there are no Desdemona magnets or audio guides. As much as I appreciated the seemingly infinite number and variety of trinkets and souvenirs in Ushuaia proper, their absence here was refreshing. An essential stop for those with the means to get here.

It was a truly touching time to see the Desdemona again after having travelled on her in 1954 when she was almost new. I loved walking all around her on the scenic shores of Tierra del Fuego. A great experience!!!!

We flew over this area. The wrecked boat will make a great photo shoot . .. Our phone camera's did not do it justice. Just make sure you check the tide as it gets a bit wet

If you leave from Ushuaia you arrive in approximately 2.30hs (we went by 4x4 of our own) by car maybe it takes longer and I do not know how long the excursions take.
It is a different place, the feeling of spaciousness is beautiful! It really feels like you're on the way out to the Atlantic Ocean
I recommend arriving before 15 as they say the tide rises afterwards

It is a beautiful place, the stranded Desdemona is impressive. The gravel road is very nice and in very good condition, we crossed guanacos. It is ideal to leave early and bring mate and food, to return before sunset. The path is to go slowly, enjoying the passage through different rooms and being able to stop and take photos. I guess in autumn it must be very beautiful too. You breathe peace and Cabo San Pablo is beautiful! Get to know, you won't regret it!!! Wear a coat!!!

The trip is long, but you enjoy the landscape. There were many guanacos that crossed each other, go calmly with caution. We arrived and the tide was rising so it was a quick photo op and then we headed back.

It is for those who want to go one step further and get to know a special place with very special people. We had lunch there coinciding with the owner's birthday. The couple treated us very well and we chose to have lunch there with their special salmon and smoked bass empanadas, fishing and family cooking.
Tour the area after a very beautiful path due to its vegetation and fauna. Meet the Rulo sheep. Buying their fabrics, a real pleasure. Walking the coast taking photos of its emblematic ship that has been stranded for years makes the place something to enjoy a lot.
