- JanaPerth, Australia12 contributionsWorth the hike! This was my favourite thing I did while in Ushuaia- the two hour hike each way was worth it for the beautiful views. I would grade it as between easy and intermediate hike so as long as you're generally fit you'll be fine but make sure you have good shoes and a trekking pole may be useful in the muddier sections. I did this hike on an organised tour via my hotel Los Cauquenes.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 27 December 2023
- Portal Hopper17 contributionsEnjoyable Hike without a TourAn easy morning trip from Ushuaia to a gorgeous venue! We took a cab to the trailhead and easily followed the trail ourselves up to Emerald Lake. A moderate walk, partially shaded in the woods and partial full-sun stream size. The reward was well worth the enjoyable hike to get there - a top activity for any trip to Ushuaia. Take time out for a hike up large granite boulders nearby for an even more spectacular view.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 17 January 2024
- kiantaSouth Bend, Indiana5 contributionsGreat family hike--even with a little mud!Did this hike with our three kids, ages 6, 8, and 9. So glad we did it! We almost skipped this trail because we heard it could be really muddy. and we had only regular shoes with us (no hiking boots). There was definitely mud, but it was very doable, even though there had been some drizzle a couple hours before we set out. Our three kids also did fine. Great family activity!Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 22 January 2024
- AvgMom2TravelLong Island, New York287 contributionsGreat Muddy Hike in Ushuaia! My husband and I hiked Laguna Esmeralda last November. It snowed the night before our hike so we knew the trail will be very muddy. Luckily, we were prepared for this condition so had brought along our rubber shoe covers from home. This saved our hiking shoes from being ruined. Our wonderful host in Ushuaia arranged our taxi ride. It took about 20 minutes to get to the parking lot and cost us 23 USD r/t. We shared the ride with another couple and there was no entrance fee for this trail. Our driver told us he’ll pick us up in four hours and gave each of us a walking stick. I didn’t think I needed one, but realized very soon into the hike how GLAD I was to have the pole when I got stuck in ankle-deep mud! The trail was muddy all the way to the lagoon – with some portion covered in wooden planks. You don’t need a guide for this hike. There are markers along the trail, but we mostly followed other hikers. There’s no bathroom or vendor selling food along the trail, so have a light breakfast and bring water and snacks (i.e. banana). There were also no trash bins, so be sure to take your trash with you. The lagoon was indeed very pretty, but it’s the scenery along the way that was breathtaking. We wished we had more time because we rushed in the end. Highly recommend this trail if you are visiting Ushuaia!Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 February 2024

This trail is probably the most destroyed trail I've seen in several years of hiking and trail running. It ought to be closed to the public to allow ecological recovery along the route. Sensitive bog areas have been trampled into obliteration. A new trail could be developed from scratch but would need raised walkways and careful planning. Very disappointing and distressing to see so many tour operators bring large groups to the trail to continue to inflict further damage.

It's a muddy, poorly designed and ill maintained trail but the traverse is rewarded by a beautiful glacial lagoon and views of the valley. The sad part is seeing how mistreated the trail and lake surroundings are, with plenty of garbage including plastic bags strewn around certain areas. Argentineans in general don't seem to have the same regard for the natural environment that their neighbors in Chile do.

I was prepared for rain, snow and cold, but San Pedro gave us sunny and clear weather of 17 degrees.
The trekking is strong. You can find yourself with a lot of mud and paths where you have to be careful where you step, be careful, you will bend your ankle.
Most of the time it is flat. Twice you encounter climbs that are going to cost you.
But it is definitely worth it since the lagoon is spectacular, accompanied by the snow that paints a dreamlike landscape.
It took us 1h30 there and 1h17 back. We went pretty fast.
I recommend going with waterproof trekking boots (that protect the ankle). Cap and sunscreen. Jacket because the weather usually changes a lot although I didn't have to use it. A granola bar type snack is enough. And a lot of water.
If you go by taxi, I recommend scheduling someone to meet you at the exit because there is no mobile signal.

This is a nice trail but really muddy! We have read about the mud but seriously it’s muddy all the way. The weather was very good and allowed us to walk easily but when we got to the lake it was very windy. Make sure you bring a thermos with hot tea, that’s what all locals do and you’ll definetely need it! The route is easy and interesting and the view from the lake amazing.

The Laguna is wonderful, beyond words. I was lucky that it was sunny on the day of my visit and I saw a stunning landscape.
Now about the trail:
My husband and I have no experience with trails and we also don't do high-intensity physical exercise. We did the entire trail (round trip) in a period of 4h30. As it had rained during the week, there was a lot of mud, the kind where you could sink in up to your shins, so I recommend waterproof sneakers or boots. It was tiring but we managed to do the trail without any major difficulties. Some trail marking points are not so easy to see, so you need to pay attention.
At the end of the trail there is an elevation of around 400m and, according to local recommendations, the trail should not start after 3pm in summer and 12pm in winter.
For anyone traveling in Ushuaia, I highly recommend this tour, it's really worth it! Oh, for those who don't know how to get to the place, there is a point in the city where several van tours leave for these tourist spots. We took a van that left at 11am and had two return times: 3pm and 5pm.

Wonderful lagoon, not to be missed in Ushuaia. In my particular case I went by regular bus that leaves from a small terminal located almost in front of the port. They are minibuses that leave at 10 in the morning and then look for you at 3 p.m. We then did the trekking on our own and many people are doing it too. The landscape is beautiful from start to finish, it is perfectly signposted and you pass through forests, beaver dams, walkways and everything with views of the snow-capped mountains until you reach, after a climb, the majestic lagoon. Once there you can walk along the beach and have a picnic, rest a little and come back.
The route has little difficulty, there is a lot of mud and that is why it is advisable to wear appropriate footwear and if you have walking sticks, also bring them. Walking, it takes 2 hours one way and 2 hours back (so you have to calculate the time well so as not to miss the bus).

We bought a transfer leaving from Ushuaia's seafront, where several tourist vans depart. We paid 8,000 pesos per person, round trip (price for April/2024). The van leaves at 10 am and returns at 3 or 5 pm. The journey takes about 30 minutes. The van drops you off at the start of the trail (there are no bars, cafes, visitor center or toilets). It had rained 2 days before so there was lots and lots of mud and mud. We rented trekking boots and it was a good decision, as I don't know if it would be possible to cross the trail without getting wet and getting stuck in just sneakers (I saw people
With casual sneakers, completely inappropriate). At the end of the trail there was a lot of frozen ice, so it was very slippery and even dangerous. We went with hiking poles which were very useful (I consider them essential in these conditions, I saw a lot of people who took tree branches to use as support). The trail is well marked so you don't need a guide (which are very expensive, by the way). We have experience with trekking and are not sedentary, but due to the terrain conditions (mud) I found it time-consuming and boring, it took us about 2:30 minutes round trip. At the end we saw many taxis waiting for passengers and there was a car selling water, beer, snacks and choripan. The lagoon is beautiful, it's worth it.

the view is very beautiful, and it is definitely worth doing!! We had rainy weather, so the road was muddy and very tiring to walk (about 5 hours round trip), but even after all this tiredness, the natural beauty there is certainly rewarding! It is very useful to take one of those hiking devices or take one of the sticks that people leave at the beginning of the trail to support yourself along the way, as at times the route gets steep and, when you are in the mud, you run the risk of falling.

Easy trekking and amazing view all the way there but very very careful with your boots/trainers as is very slippery and moddy. You can easily go without guide, FOR FREE, you just need to pay the taxi/bus until the closest parking.

After approx 4,5 kms of trekking, with young children in the snow, the lake was frozen unfortunately, covered with snow, so we did not see the lake. Contact Igancio from Taun expeditions as your guide. Really recomended!
